He is so right. Professional soccer players run 3 to 6 miles in 90 minutes plus of the soccer game. Soccer is a long distance event.

NO! pro soccer players run 5-7.5 miles and it's a mix from sprint capacity and endurance! Soccer is very exhausting. Only Rugby is also as exhausting. But in soccer the hard part is you have to constantly make decisions and concentrate on executing skills. Soccer is like playing a NFL skill position without having a break for 45min straight. Soccer players always get slower as they age!

Messi supposedly walks most of the game if you look at analytics.

Great! Timed Sprinting is the best for the speed. How about mobility and recovery? Do you think Yoga(yin or slow ashtanga) and form rolling are helpful or bad? Thanks

Yoga is great for feeling good and general health. Not good for running faster. A stretched rubber band doesn’t shoot as far. Rollers are ok. I prefer Reflexive Performance Reset (RPR).

Coach, how do you have sprinters lift? How often, what time of year, what rep range, etc? What about football players?

My guys now lift during the school day in their PE class. I have very little control over it and that’s ok. It just needs to stay general and not interfere with the pursuit of speed. My guys are hyper-aware of their times. If they are slow due to something in the weight room, they adjust. We used to lift after school. www.freelapusa.com/record-rank-publish-8-weeks-of-alactic-training/

I think the best soccer players are the ones with great speed. I believe if you incorporate Tony’s speed training in soccer twice a week, you will have much better soccer players.

Hi coach, for track & field you focus on weight room in off-season with speed and xfactor days. Then 4 weeks before meetings when starting with lactate workouts and during season, do you recommend stop training with weights and only do speed, xfactor and lactates? Thank you as always 🙏

@@SunOmega We lift after workouts. Lifting is great but there’s one rule… NEVER LET LIFTING INTERFERE WITH SPEED.

@@coachtonyholler Yes thats what im doing, lifting after xfactor days for now, so i dont let it ruin tomorrow. But do you still keep lifting in season, when you have track meetings?

@@SunOmega Yes, continue. But limit leg work. Or stop doing leg work.

Your body has only so much recovery power. If you are sprinting, to go with lifting you will stay lean and strong. You won't gain a lot of weight. Try to gain quality muscle, maybe 3-5 lbs.

I understand what point you're trying to make but telling people to keep their kids from playing soccer because they will be slow isn't the right move. Abby Steiner is the prime example of that. Don't put the fear of a certain sport into an athlete especially youth athletes because they need to experience it all
@coachtonyholler

The point is not soccer and slow jogging around, it’s the ABSENCE OF SPEED WORK. Soccer is often a year-round thing for older kids. No speed work, ever. Abby Steiner is a unicorn. 🙂

A lot of ignorance and insight. “This man is slow….” False assumption. Try: this man isn’t his fastest. Quality strength training beats poor sprint training for speed in many green kids, and kids who have built imbalances and poor mechanics. Quality speed training beats quality strength training in the pursuit of speed: We agree on this. Too many kids have been rescued from bad coaches by getting them fixed in the weight room for some of your claims to be truthful. We agree that starting off with a fresh (no habits) athlete benefits more from proper speed training. We agree that when we have full (or at least most) control of an athlete that proper speed training and supplemented (only as needed) strength training is better for the athlete in every way.

@@coachtonyholler haha i work in multiple rooms. Where ever I get the kids. Do we agree: -quality speed/sprint training is better than quality strength training in the pursuit of speed.
