Yes, that's how model making is done. You just stepped it up. Check the rabbit cutter for other foam board projects. Its a very handy tool made for foam board modeling. I used it at school and it is so good for architecture models etc...

I had a thought to make the sword more rigid. If you put a piece of PVC in the middle of the diamond shape it will have the length and strength to make a pretty solid sword. If you heat the PVC with a heat gun, you can even flatten it to better fit the blade shape.

I can't remember the technical name for it, but the rounded notch in the sword blade just above the handguard is used to increase the force of your swing. I've no idea how it came about or who discovered it, but being able to have a finger above the guard allows you to better control your motions and therefore allows you strike much stronger. Also, on an unrelated note, we have that same picture of the man being knighted hanging on our wall as well. That is one sexy beast of a sword!

Nice work! By the way, the cut on the blade next to the hand guard (00:38) allows you to put your finger so the swing of your attack (from high to low) gets bigger. Just give it a try ;)

Question about the part where you carve the V shape down the center of the blade. you specify to draw a line from the tip of the sword all the way down to the tip of the little decorative spear piece that comes up over the handle. At 5:31 in the video it appears you also drew a line that runs along the edge of the decorative piece at the bottom. Should we be making a V shape notch along those lines as well? if not why did you draw a line there?

I would highly recommend putting a Fiberglass rod through the middle. Because if you plan on using it with your friends you will want some extra strength.

i am working on a Braveheart costume so I need a scottish broadsword. I decided to make this one as you designed it because its a nice long sword. Have you ever done a scottish broad sword? Im midway thru the build of this one. I may use this for that costume or I may build another and tweak the handle area, which is the area where it doesn't look particularly scottish, its looks more middle earth as it should. Either way I wanna do your sword per your instructions to get a feel for the process and may strike out on my own afterwards. I just wanted to thank you for sharing this with the YT community.
