RE, loose panels. If you get a good strong wind gust that can send them sailing. Which could easily kill someone, injure someone, or damage property. Good job being a pro and putting your stuff back together!

Whole bunch of years ago, I was working at a retail store who was having their roof redone. They had part of the roof covered in a large tarp since the forcast was calling for rain that evening. I walked outside near the end of my shift to throw some garbage in the dumpster when a large waterlogged ceiling tile flew off the roof with a gust of wind, smashing into my back, slamming me into the ground. Luckily I only had a few scratches and bruises but holy moly it could have been so much worse. And thankfully I was only 16! Don't think I would have sprung back up so easily these days!

I had a interesting encounter with a customer end of last year i was installing a point to point wifi link (i work in PC networking) and mentioned it to the owner that one of their AC units on the roof had half the panels off. Some were half tucked under the unit others just on the ground next to it. The person was came up and had a look. Wasnt too pleased, apparently a week and half ago they had a tech there working on it. And the guy just left it like that while waiting for parts.

I found out that it’s cheaper to replace the entire blower assembly. When you start figuring up your time verses material cost. You should try Opti-Belts, especially for your exhaust fans, much longer belt life. Good for AHU’s. For adjusting the new motor pulley, I use my hex keys, to gauge the gap, deep in the pulley. Grainger’s has Crocus Cloth in rolled strip, like plumbing sand cloth rolls, for cutting the glaze on the pulleys. Just don’t use it on copper fittings.

Back in 1985 I worked Maintenance at the biggest Hotel in our Town. None of the HVAC units on the roof had ever been maintained properly. One weekend a belt went bad on the roof vent over the kitchen Broiler and Fry stove. The kitchen got smokey and hot. I had to go up there and replace the belt with the stove on. I ended up burning myself on hot metal and what not. It kept them from having to close the kitchen that night. After that, the head cook made sure I got free dinner whenever I wanted. Also, I informed my boss of the equipment condition on the roof. I spent all summer fixing faulty roof ventilators, and eventually learned heating and cooling system repair that lasted a lifetime. Granted, I wasn't certified but it made my position invaluable.

I was working in a large hotel as external contractor when i smelled natural gas in the staff kitchen, looked around and found a large stove on three legs causing the leak, fixed it while the cooks were working and came back in the afternoon to put some shims to stop the wobble. Got me a few free meals or extra meat on my plate. Chef told me he had been complaining with maintenance for many weeks.

It is nice that you have a look at whole thing and find even the issues that nobody asked you about. Not everybody does that. But why did you replace the motor? It only had bad bearings, these can easily be replaced, it would be much cheaper than replacing the whole motor.

So I would guess that the motor pulley being worn is the root cause of the failure. A worn pulley will suck the belt down deep into the pulley. Remember that the belts are made with Kevlar and that is stronger than steel. Momentum will jerk the belt out of the motor pulley but it is a pretty violent thing and it happens over and over. Now when you look at the fan the front bearing can act as a fulcrum and the fan shaft as a lever thus amplifying the force on the fan pulley back to the back fan bearing.
@paulchristian8271

It’s a good idea to coat the blower hub and shaft to prevent rust. If it loses a bearing again, and ruins the shaft, it can make changing just the shaft much easier, if the blower wheel is not ruined. I have converted those to pillow block bearings as well.

I think this was a good call, even if the fan wheel might have had an even wear all around so the balance might not have been an issue it's also a risk that it could give low frequency noise when running. Replacing the engine is easy, and if the old engine could be rebuilt then it could be used in a similar unit later. No customer likes unnecessary downtime of equipment and having to come back a month later for a dead engine would just have been a waste of effort. As for the paint being cracked - only service technicians would look into that space anyway. But a tag notifying that bearings were replaced at a certain date could help whenever someone looks at this in the future. (not sure if you did that)

Good morning Chris! How much did you save going to the motor rebuilder? I normally did those type of repairs in the field especially since you had all the LAU numbers. The one thing that you do which I never did in our trade was the “ R “. So maybe your time is different. When I had to do a pump rebuild for a water system. I did take it to the rebuilders as they would rebuild the pump and motor. Great video as always. Have a great Thursday! God bless.

Re: YOUR TOOL REVIEWS: how about a few clips of you testing out tools some tecks think are unique to what others may carry? For example, most have a straight 5" needle nose, mine used to be a Shimanno for years. Now it's a 1000V 5" bent nosed type (erwin brand) with 30° angle tip. Everyone who tries it has a think about how they feel about that 😆. Most new tecks say it's on their tool list after I show 'em how I use its many useful features, as it does stick out due to handle colour designation and odd shape. Doesn't do much for the ladies though.(counter intuitive, I know) Chilling in South Western Canada, laid off from a job I loved and probably won't get back, due to Covid19.

Chris, do you usually just replace the motor when it needs bearings? My father rebuilt a lot of electric motors when I was a kid, so I always grew up changing bearings in them myself. A press and some nut drivers and you'd be set bud :) but I understand, its a time thing, right?

I just hate that there are always problems like corrosion or not properly shielded bearings by owners cheaping out when building new. No matter if it is industrial or residential they pay so huge in follow up costs, having to bring up technicians to the units again, again and again. And as this labour never is planned there is never budged for it, so nobody is allowed to take time for e.g. corrosion prevention. They rather pay lengthy cleaning processes instead of building heat exangers fitting for their purpose or having the right filters.

It blows my mind just a little bit how much a rubber belt can wear a steel pulley. Is there any reason they are v belts and haven't swapped to grooved flat belts like cars did in the 80s? Maybe because they require more tension, they perform much better in every respect though.
@stevenmoomey2115
@stevenmoomey2115 4 жыл бұрын
Standardstyle it has to do with the motors starting torque and how fast it reaches its maximum speed. The belt needs to do a little bit of stretching and slippage on start up. On a car the belt starts slowing spinning when you crank the engine then goes to idle speed. Even at highway speeds you are generally not even close to the electric motor RPM, and you are not getting there instantly, from a dead stop.
@standardstyle5976
@standardstyle5976 4 жыл бұрын
@@stevenmoomey2115 I don't believe thats the case at all but thanks for the reply.
@Tevildo
@Tevildo 4 жыл бұрын
Standardstyle - The main advantage of V-belts is that they're adjustable. In a car, you're not really worried about the speed - the pump or alternator has to operate over the entire range of the engine speed, so the only issue is that it produces sufficient output when the engine is at idle. For this application, however, the belt is driven by a synchronous AC motor (which will always turn at a fixed speed), and we need to control the speed of the blower fairly accurately (so that the air balance of the building is correct). Using a grooved belt would mean we'd have to have a range of pulleys, all with slightly different diameters, and the process of selecting the right one would be very time-consuming. With a V-belt, we can just open or close the sheave to give us a range of drive ratios, and set the fan speed in one operation.
