Thank you so much, Bernie! Again, you have removed an area of struggle from my whipmaking! Thank you for taking the time to do this!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. This is my new adventure in leather skills and I love your videos and your technique. Now I just hope I don't knock an eye out trying to learn how to crack it. Keep up the good work. Richard Black Blacksleather

The fall is to prevent the plaited part of your whip from getting damaged. The fall takes all the hard knocks and when it is worn out can be replaced easily whereas if you wear the end of the plaited part of your whip out it can't be repaired all that easily unless you know what you are doing.

Sorry I missed this Dave, sometime youtube don't notify me of a comment.Like Rocky said rule of thumb is 30 inches for bull whips and stock whips from 6ft up. Smaller whips equal smaller falls. Having said that I have seen 12 foot bull whips with falls worn down to 12 inches and still cracking merrily

I don't know how good red hide is, but the white hide is superb quality, I would defineitly recomed using it for falls, white hide is some really strong shit.

Your welcome Richard. Seriously if you are concerned about being hit when your crack a whip I would recommend using safety goggles. You might not look like Indiana Jones but it's preferable to detaching a retina which I know has happened to at least 2 people that I know of.

The lubrication is called Jay El leather dressing. It is an Australian product so can be very difficult to get overseas. Any good leather dressing that you would use on a saddle will do the job for you.You can also make your own from fat and soap.

That is a very good idea. There are a few recipes around to make your own.I will try and find one for you,it is very easy to make.

Bernie ... is there a good rule of thumb on how long the fall should be relative to the length of the thong? Did you say that your falls are 13 or 30 inches long? Between my ears and your accent I couldn't quite understand what you said about length in this video. Thanks, Dave

It helps to round the falls so they are more aerodynamic.

G'day Ben. The dressing I use is called Jay-El leather dressing and you can get it in the US from downunderwebdotcom/store/SaddleCareProducts.html Another dressing I have heard good reports is Feibing Aussie leather dressing. If you Google that you should come up with it and you should be able to get it at a Tandy leathercraft store or on the web.
