In this video we'll talk about the physical properties of a whip and why it is so important to understand basic aerodynamics as a whip maker and whip cracker. We'll talk about an ideal fall length and how to fine tune a nylon fall as well as the difference in sound with different sized crackers.

I am a lot younger than you, but I applaud your quest to fulfill a lifelong dream of yours. The people who say that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” are pretty dang ignorant if you ask me. For instance: playing the guitar is my passion, which I admittedly did start learning as a 13 year old, but I truly believe any person who wants to learn a new skill or hobby like that is totally capable of doing so at any age. Keep doing what you’re doing! Don’t let people tell you that you can’t do a certain thing because of your age. KZbin has made it so that anyone can learn a whole lot about any topic you can think of at any age. Glad to hear someone from your generation realizing that, while not being afraid, and taking advantage of the excellent resources that are out there!

I've just started whipmaking as a hobby and I've got to thank you for this video. This is exactly the information I needed, which I found was rather hard to find in a well made and comprehensible way. You've earned a like and a subscriber. Excellent videos EDIT (again): Pointing me towards coreless 650 and bonded nylon is a life saver. Plus we share the same name, Nick

Nick, thanks for the great information to help me repair a 9' stock whip I use to move cattle. I had to fix the whip and make a new fall and cracker for which your video was immensely helpful. Loved the science part behind it. This whip is mainly used for noise so I did a 4 strands doubled over for the cracker (parachord guts). This ended up being to thick but crackable. To anyone using a longer whip horseback and such I would start with 3 strands doubled over for the cracker which gets you a pretty easy but loud crack. THANKS!!

I have to say a big thanks for this video Nick. I’ve only made 1 whip so far, it’s a 20” bull, the handle is 2 1/2” long. I ended it with a tapered twist with the connected fall (one piece thong/fall). It wasn’t easy to crack! I shortened the fall to 5” and put on a way lighter cracker: 8” (6”&2”) out of 8lbs FireWire fishing line, 4 strands doubled over. Wow! Does it crack now! Unbelievable difference. I have to give Conner some credit too, because I watched his and your video then made my mod last night. Thanks again Nick!

I noticed with the 9 footer I made was recoiling, also the tip of the thong began to stretch and the core became exposed. The fall was 2.5 feet long but when I conceptualized it, I had a longer whip in mind. I shot loaded over halfway through the thong and that must've added way more mass then the fall could handle. Either I should've put way less weight, or drastically increased the length of the fall and/or thong. I love that somebody has the time to figure this shit out so I can just watch and learn. Keep it up man, your videos are straight up gold.

Excellent video on falls and cracks, I prefer using spectra myself though, as compared to nylon it's much much tougher. And can be very loud even with a light flick.I have also found that more than one knot is ideal for me, At least one further than your 8" and at least two before it about two inches apart.

Using bonded nylon thread to make crackers…what’s a reasonable expected lifespan for the cracker? I’ve been making them following a similar method in this video (without the jig though). Seems like I can only get about a hundred cracks out of one before the tassel gets too short and then explodes. I’m not targeting anything, just practicing basic cracks.

So is a fall's length proportionate to the overall whip length? If the whip is shorter, is the fall also shortened? (I'm quite the novice at this).

Regarding the physics - the shockwave front velocity, thickness and direction relative to the audience is also influencing how loud a supersonic shock is preceived. A jetfighter flying over your head at 750 mph is producing a „thick“ shockwave front due to its own volume, beginning behind he observer and passing literally though him. A fully accelerated bullwhip produces a front developing away from the whip thrower NOT passing through but away from him. So while he may experience a comparatively „silent“ crack, somebody standing in front of him will hear it much louder.

From a math standpoint - I'll immediately admit, I might be way off - I suspect that the length of whip's fall is possibly proportionate to the length of the whip in question.

not a professional nor do i own a whip but i believe he stated in an earlier video that a effectively a bullwhip has a stiff handle and is larger (and heavier as a result) where as the snake whip effectively starts after the handle of a bull whip ends. That said the video where i believe he stated this was one of his tutorials on snake whip making so perhaps that could answer your question a little better.

Hey the laughing melon, a bull whip has a handle with in the whip (usually a 10 inch piece of steel or fiberglass rod) while a snake whip doesn't.... making the bullwhip stiffer and easier to crack... while a snake whip take a little bit more of a finess to crack. Hope this helps! Matt
