Make Wire Stem Stick Floats for River Fishing. I recently fished a local river by trotting with a float. Unfortunately, the float I used wasn't specifically designed for that type of fishing, so, in this video I am going to show you how to make some Wire Stemmed Stick Floats.
As I mentioned in the video, I didn't have any stick float to copy from in order to get the correct body sizes, so I guessed at what i needed. Here are the final lengths as promised.
Float Body Lengths:
Dome Top Stick Floats:
2 x No4 - Length: 45mm
3 x No4 - Length: 60mm
5 x No4 - Length: 80mm
7 x No4 - Length: 90mm
Thin Tip Stick Floats:
2 x No4 - Length: 35mm
3 x No4 - Length: 45mm
4 x No4 - Length: 55mm
5 x No4 - Length: 65mm
Dome Top Stick Floats (Thick Tips):
4 x No4 - Length: 40mm
6 x No4 - Length: 50mm
8 x No4 - Length: 60mm
10 x No4 - Length: 70mm
12 x No4 - Length: 80mm
Spring Steel wire Diameter - 0.8mm

Thanks Paul. People used to make floats all the time back when I was young. These days, they just spend a lot of money on them and don't get the satisfaction of catching fish with something they made themselves.

I use my wife's flower vase to shot my floats at home. I have started making my own floats from bird quills, and balsa dowels as well.

Den they are berley floats, shaped out of poplar, about 100 mm long including the stem and shaped like a banjo. Lightweight, small and not like the big cigar shaped ones sold in tackle shops. They are flat in profile and the centre - the “o” bit is where the berley goes. Holds about a tablespoons worth. They work like a waggler, I can cast them a long way and they have made me the garfish king on the piers of Melbourne. I’ll do a vid one day.

Hi Den. Thanks for the vid mate. Where do you purchase your wire from? This is something I have been meaning to get into for a couple of years. Now the rivers are closed it seems like a good time to start.

I buy Piano Wire from a model shop Tony, but if you can get it, Stainless Spring Steel (Stainless Steel) Wire would be better because it doesn't need painting.

Hey Den, any chance you can give me the lengths of the wire you used on each size please? Thanks.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think I had any specific lengths Adam. Generally, I try to keep the length of the stems to be between 1.5 to 2 times the length of the body. I hope that helps.

@@FishingwithDen awesome, that’s what I’ve done. One last question, where can I get float rubbers small enough to hold the line tight against the 0.8mm stem? Thanks Den. I made a heap up and now waiting for their black coat to dry so I can start painting tips.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 3 жыл бұрын
@@adammilanovic3650I'm glad to see my video helped Adam. I think you might struggle to get the silicone rubber of that diameter in OZ. I get mine from Billy Clarke Fishing Tackle in the UK. They do lengths of different diameter tubing (I think 1 metre), but they also have a dispenser like the ones you get with split shot. These dispensers have cut lengths of different diameter tubing to cope with different guages of metal. Alternatively, you could look on Ebay. I suggest you buy the 0.8mm and 1.0mm diameter tubing because you have to bear in mind that the paint layers on the stems will increase their diameter. You also need to consider that you have to get your main line through them as well. I hope that helps mate.

What does no 4 represent Den? I'm not sure exactly what that stands for in ur measurements in the description.Split shot size maybe?
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick. it does refer to split shot sizes mate. One No4 shot equals 0.2 grams, so 5 x no4 = 1gram. Unfortunately our system of marking floats has quite a number of variations, which can make it confusing. I will do a video in the next few weeks covering split shot, stotz, styls etc in the next few weeks to clarify the situation. I hope that covers it for this question though.

I'm too lazy to carefully paint the tips. I just dunk them in a tin of paint, lift out and wait a few seconds for the blob of excess paint to form and then brush it off. As long as you dunk them vertically you always get a perfect line. I do the same with pole floats to make the top of the bristle a bit thicker to help my ageing eyes.

Sounds good to me mate. I tried it with the paint bottles I use, but the necks are too narrow and i ended up getting paint where I didn't want it. Your way is a lot easier if the neck is wide enough.
