You can sand it with wet sandpaper, first 800 grit (wet), wash it clean, sand it with 2000 (wet), wash it clean. Dry it thoroughly. Use painters masking tape to protect the paint around the lense. Then use Rust-oleum 2x Ultracover Gloss Clear spray from HD. Make sure you shake that can good for a few minutes. This spray seals, protects and revitalizes plastic (and other materials). The spray is fast drying non-yellowing and is UV resistant. Looks better than new.
@lydiacruz17162 жыл бұрын
It only works if the uv clear coat is still on the lens and most of the clear is long gone so it just basically melts the plastic and comes out a little smear look.

This doesn't work everytime, so folks need to be aware of that. My headlight had one bad spot, using this caused the area to get worse and turned it a very cloudy white. I attempted to go over it several more times and it just made it worse and started removing the plastic off onto the microfiber cloth. I had to go to the next step, wet sanding the entire headlight starting with 400 grit and working to 2000. That parts done, heading to home depot for clear coat gloss now and will see how it turns out. If it comes out good, the gloss will also add a layer of uv protection and last longer. If it still doesn't look very good it's time for a new headlight.
@AllThingsRamdom3 жыл бұрын
You definitely have to inspect the headlights and you have to make sure they are clean before doing this process. You also have to make sure when you're wiping with the cloth you roll the cloth as you wipe so it's constantly exposed to a clean surface of the cloth and not cross contaminating. I added more details in the description of the video when posting the video.
@AllThingsRamdom3 жыл бұрын
Also your headlight can fog up if there's a small hairline crack in it. Acetone vapors will get behind the lens of the headlight and fog it from the inside if you have cracks.
@Mr_Tecumseh3 жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsRamdom The headlight was clean, it had no cracks. Get down far enough it eats the plastic to the point it doesn't have clarity, theirs no stopping it and people should be aware of it because depending how worn, the faster it's gonna eat it. You get one good shot at it. New headlight on, done. Truck was thoroughly washed prior as I just bought it, wasn't gonna have 1 hazy headlight and one perfectly clear one on an otherwise mint vehicle. Best way to go about bringing back a headlight is use the kit from 3m, project farm covered 6 different kits, that one performed best out of 6 tested, brought it back to perfection with a UV layer of protection added, using acetone alone, it will fade again, no layed of uv protection left, so it doesn't fade again, acetone removes that layer. For $20 bucks if I had to do it all over again, that's the route I would take vs a new light. It's done. Acetone eats plastic. Thats what you did, removed the top layer of hazy plastic with acetone, because it eats it off. That isn't a 1 size fits all solution, once you go far enough into the plastic its past the point of no return, all depends how worn and hazy a light is. Do this at your own risk. Definitely reccomend the 3m kit for the $20 bucks. Plenty left over for more headlights after the first use.

@AllThingsRamdom3 жыл бұрын
you have to make sure the headlight is clean and you are not allowing the contaminated part of the cloth to contact the lense. Also if you see in the description if you have cracks in the lense it can cause the lense to fog up. I've done this on over 20 headlights and only had a problem once which was when there were cracks in the lense. I have also found it works even better if you only do one wipe versus multiple wipes across the same surface.

We just tried this and ended up with a huge mess. Having not seen the video, we used nail polish remover which is supposed to be acetone. Says so on the bottle. We did not use a microfiber towel and we used a scrubbing motion. After about an hour of repeated applications of acetone with a paper towel, we ended up with a smeary mess. So then we followed another KZbinr's advice and scrubbed then with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar, and must say it made a huge improvement, but not beautiful like what I see in these videos, so I bought more acetone. The moment we applied it again, the headlights returned to their cloudy, smeary appearance. My car is a 2004. Perhaps too many coats of car wax or too many years of oxidation? I did notice if you pour the acetone directly onto the headlight, it seems to dissolve the oxidation, but it needs a place to go. So, should I go get a microfiber cloth and buy some acetone in a can instead?.
@AllThingsRamdom2 жыл бұрын
After the headlights are clean you can apply the method I show in the video. If you already have cloudy headlights due to doing something similar it probably won't help. You most likely already contaminated the lens to the point of no return.

@World Traveler The video is not misleading. If you do it right, you won't have a problem. Read the description of the video, please. I've done this to many, many headlight lenses. The only time I have ever had an issue is if the headlights have cracks all the way through them because the vapor of the acetone can get behind the lens, causing them to fog.

@AllThingsRamdom3 жыл бұрын
It lasts until the oxidation occurs again from the sunlight exposure. Mine has lasted a few years. All it's doing is removing the oxidation. You can get some special spray to spray over the headlight once you've done it which is UV protected to make it last longer but even as it's still lasts years. Yes there can be consequences if you have cracks in your head light lenses that go all the way through. If this is the case it can fog your lens up from the inside.

Yes that's basically what it does is melt the oxidation off the plastic and puts it on the cloth. This is why you have to use a clean portion of the cloth the entire time. If you don't use a clean portion of the cloth the whole time it can cross contaminate into the lens.

Acetone can be used when Painting to thin paint. It works quite well in automotive paint as a thinner because it evaporates so quickly it allows it to drive faster. As far as harming the paint on your car once it's cured it takes repeated exposure. I have removed many adhesive from decals and stickers off vehicles with acetone with no problems whatsoever when it comes to it affecting the paint. That's not to say that it can't because it can, however when I use it In this manner it hasn't affected the paint.
