I could listen to Josh noodling with chords and talking through it all day long! 👌

Hey Josh, such a fantastic video you release. I started with chords a few weeks ago and your video really helped me a lot, mainly because my music theory background isn't so good (in my spare time I'm trying to correct that issue, but work become harder with pandemic and spare time decrease a lot). I truly appreciate your work and all the effort you puts on all your videos.

Josh, one thing you forgot to mention is (a) chords are easier to play higher up on the neck and (b) chords on bass also sound better high up on the neck. Even though conceptually the chords should be playable all the way down the bottom, the number of Hz between notes down there is half as much as up at the 12th fret, and they sound a lot more muddy, so keep it simple down there: just double stops, like root-fifth, root-octave, root-tenth.,

Totally! I cover that in the BassBuzz video, this lesson was decidedly not about fundamentals. :)

John: you’re obviously a virtuoso, but what advice do you have for the oft’ bass player thrown into a band by default when he’s the least accomplished guitar player, like I was… at first I took a Berklee grad’s lessons, but when he noticed I was writing whole songs we were giggling and recording he said f**k it and he’d write my demos in full standard notation and he’d work with me on rock bass lines which supported the songs. Not the best way to learn the instrument, but it just worked well enough to open for Govt Mule, Little Steven’s Rock n Roll Circus and Ny dolls and the Supersuckers. Btw, I was a hack rhythm self taught guitar player to begin with but I had an ear for writing music. What’s your opinion and advice for that scenario.?

Hi josh ive been struggling lately with some composions were i need to play 3 notes on different strings at the same time, kinda similar to casual guitar chord playing. I know this is rare for bass. Could you help ? Please

And also there are lots of other four note chord voicings that can sound interesting played midway to high up on the neck when you are just practicing alone. Janek Gwizdala does lots of those. although he tends to play a 5-string tenner bass strung E, A, D, G, and C. But you can still make some expensive sounding four note voices if you just play them high up on the neck. Some of them are very taxing on the fingers I will warn you. But if you keep practicing, it is worth it. Just don't try this in a band setting. But maybe in a fun jam session to show off to your keyboard and guitar friends, it can be amazing.
