It's hard to fault the stock Reaper plugins. They do EXACTLY what they're supposed to and with very little hit to the CPU. Great video once again, and I'd love more in depth tutorials on the stock plugins.

Nice vid. only thing i would of done extra to the fake Room track is clean up the lows and highs a bit with the filters. But, as we know, its all preference. Awesome Vid Myk

Hey, enjoyed your clip. I just started with this recording stuff. I have a basic knowledge of recording but have so much to learn. For example, I tend to get some distortion off my bass mic. You mentioned using a limiter. Live to try it, where us that feature in reaper. Also, looks like you have alot more effects plug ins than me. I must confess I'm using the free version so I'll throw out that that's the reason.

@@LetsTalkAboutReaper I designed and teach an audio engineering course at a fine private university in St. Louis (that I am grateful to be employed at). I use Reaper of course. I also watch some of your videos (among others) in class, and use videos for references for the students to facilitate their respective projects. They personalize them of course, but I like your videos (and Kenny's) as good starting point references for many of our class projects. Keep the excellent work (and humour) coming sir!

@@LetsTalkAboutReaper That sounds great, just let me know when you want to come into town. If it would interest you, maybe you could guest host in one of my audio engineering classes for a fun project for our university students? I would be happy to seek a small payment for you for your time. Let me know if you may be interested and we could discuss further details.

Very helpful video, thank you. I really like the trick to make the fake room track. Very clever. I'm wondering if a convolution reverb would work better than an algorithmic one on that track?

I like.my natural room when crushed more than I did in this video, it gets pretty nasty when I need it to. But at the same time, I gotta add more treatment to help control the room a tad more. I'd like to experiment with more mic placement options as well. Just thinking out loud.....

Great video! I've been wondering how to create a "fake room" sound that closely resembles a real room mic setup. Adding that compressor AFTER the reverb is the way to go! Wow! I think the fake one your created sounds even better than the real room mics!!! Thanks for making this video! Tom

Can i apply this to electronic drums as well?
@LetsTalkAboutReaper
@LetsTalkAboutReaper 2 жыл бұрын
Don't see why not, as the electronic drums ultimately produce drum-like sounds. Not really any different than applying FX to drum samples.

Reaper stock plugins are certainly not eye candy but they sound great! And with the introduction of Tucan studios plugins, I don't see why anyone should spend their hard earned money to buy expensive brand plugs. Cheers. Thx for great and inspiring videos

What if I recorded the whole drums with only one general condenser mic? Any tips on what can be used on such kind of setup?
@LetsTalkAboutReaper
@LetsTalkAboutReaper 5 ай бұрын
hard to give a ton of useful advise without hearing it, but i have to ask, do you have access to at least one more mic? A single mic can work but of course you lose a pretty much any sense of "space" with the drums. I think if i were in that situation, my first course of action would be to acquire a second mic so i can have my drums in stereo. Don't get me wrong, it can and has been done successfully. For the time being, i think my answer is to check out some information from someone more knowledgeable than me on this specific subject kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIfbaaSMjtRlrMksi=v0KPJ3Rml26YofW0

I don't entirely understand what your channel 1 "drums" entails. Is that the entire mix combined? Did you route the rest of your mix to channel 1?
@LetsTalkAboutReaper
@LetsTalkAboutReaper 10 ай бұрын
I put all my drum kit pieces into a "folder," which in REAPER acts as a bus by default. So I can control the global volume of the drums on the one track, and any FX I put on that track affects the whole of the drums

I like the concept of having an option of using fake room mics when needed, thanks for the video tutorial! on a side note, that background music while you talk is really disruptive, consider not using it :)
@LetsTalkAboutReaper
@LetsTalkAboutReaper 2 жыл бұрын
I go back and forth on the background music. I like to have something because the silence can be maddening. I think I'll stick to something much more ambient with less of a defined beat. Sorry for missing the mark a bit on this one.
@TazzSmk
@TazzSmk 2 жыл бұрын
@@LetsTalkAboutReaper oh I see, maybe severely hi-cut/hi-shelf the background ambient music, so it sounds less intrusive? during jumps between talking and audio examples, it's definitely more disruptive, compared to ambience while talking longer :)
