This is the first episode of the mini series where I will go over how to make your own custom mobs in Minecraft. This video was during the 20w17a 1.16 snapshot but should work in all versions past 1.13. The first episode covers:
- Choosing your base mob
- Adding effects and attributes to your mob
- Adding and positioning your custom model
- Making sure the model rotates and is destroyed with the mob
To skip the example, go to 13:00. I changed parts of the video, so the timestamp is wrong but im too lazy to reexport it.

Would it be possible to create custom models by retexturing slimes and using the size attribute??

You cant use custom model data on slimes, and I think the model for all slimes is the same file regardless of slime size, its probably better to use an armorstand on them, that’s what I did for the water blob in the nether pack.

Hey, just a quick question. I would like to make a piranha using the tropical fish a basis for it. So technically a tropical fish with a piranha texture that spawns in djungle waters and bites everything that goes in the water. What would be the right direction to go to archieve that in your opinion?

would this be a good way to add new mob textures? I want to add more variation for cats and possibly make a pack for a server in the future but I'm not sure what the simplest way to go about that would be

This is for data packs, not mods, but yeah that will make it truely mod free, best for things that will be shared for others to use, or for servers if you want to go the data pack route.

Oh yeah, what I meant with Optifine is it allows you to override entity models already in the game. I accidently got confused with wording in my original comment, oops. So if you are in a position to get the users of your datapack to install Optifine you have a lot more freedom with your models.

Technically you could use a slime for a custom hitbox. (due to the size nbt thing)

i just thought about this, but you can also use scoreboards to synchronize health between multiple entities, meaning more complicated hitboxes can be made out of separate entities

This is great! BUT I have a question. I made toads with this tutorial but don't know how to make it so it can interact with other mobs from datapacks. Could you make a tutorial on this? (I won't let my mob starve so i'm thinking of it eating flies like the frogs eating slimes/magmacubes)

Oh no! My model works but not the datapacks, i was typing that comment when i didn't know that my toad's model stayed after death and wasn't looking in the right direction. Does 1.18.2 change the way datapacks are coded?

i am really confused. after forming the model in blockbench, must we export the model as a jem or json file. and where will we need to put the textures at. this is because my texture won’t load on the entity

If this doesn't work go into the code of the item you will see item/Yourtexture.png Or Block/yourtexture.png And the particle one replace it with the name of your texture

I really like your videos, and i wanna know if it's possible to impement like elektrik energy with a data pack, like if you burn an specifik item it gives the player energy with a scoreboard or it stores it in a block with an ntb tag. Then you can use this energy to make autofarming machines, or repair your armor or something or to move a vehicle like you made with the tank. It's just an idea.

Yeah, I just wouldn’t do it though normal burning, I would add my own machine like a combustion engine or something. You can use a placable invisible armorstand which will setblock a dropper when placed, which can have a custom model to make it look like a machine. Then from there u can basically do anything.

Hey ,this is awesome,,but i have an irrelevant question,,is it possible to do this without resource pack with the vanilla resources? Specifically with the wither ? I know it's not an item Basically i want to have 8 withers with no ai and without bossbar only using datapack,since I can't have wither without bossbar I went for wither shaped entities but i couldn't find anything,you are my last hope

There is a better way of killing the texture when the mob dies, since if there is other mob near it wont disapear, let me explain: create a predicate called: has_no_vehicle.json containing the following: { "condition": "minecraft:inverted", "term": { "condition": "minecraft:entity_properties", "entity": "this", "predicate": { "vehicle": {} } } } This basically returns true if the entity has no vehicle. Next create a looping function with this command: kill @e[tag=texture, predicate:namespace:has_no_vehicle] if the armor stand has the tag "texture" and if the predicate turns to be true, it will kill every armor stand with those conditions.

You are on the wrong version, thats for bedrock models. Make sure you are doing s java model, you should be able to convert in the top left.

Hello, a question, I had the illusion that the cows with yellow flowers would come out but I was left with the desire and this morning it occurred to me to change the texture of the brown cow with mushrooms since I do not use it in my day to day and so on. , although not with its functions it can have a yellow cow with flowers. In principle everything is fine, I changed the textures from the brown cow to the yellow one but when I tried it after several attempts it was perfect but the mushrooms did not change and doing tests I noticed that if I changed the texture of the mushrooms (the item) it was changed in the cow also which led me to deduce that the brown cow and the brown mushrooms are linked. And the question is if you know if there is any way to unlink the cow with the mushrooms and link it with the yellow flowers since I would not like to change the texture of the brown mushrooms.

With the way you did it, if there are two snakes very close and you kill one of them, the model of the other would still remain. It would be better if you could give each set of silverfish and armor stand a different tag

you could tweak exact radius of kill radius enough so that it barely includes the base entity

So I got my custom mob model working, however since I’ve used a zombie, when it looks down, the whole body ends up rotating causing the model to float. Is there a way to fix this?

I'm making an Ice Beast, which is neutral, and attacks all monsters like an Iron Golem, but it doesn't protect villagers, so should i use an Iron Golem as the base mob? i'm also making a LionCat which is neutral and Tameable like a wolf, but can keep away creepers and hisses at phantoms like a Cat, what should i do?

Is there a way to switch the item model depending on when the mob is moving? I have animated a custom model and also have a non-animated model but I would like a way to make it so that the non-animated custom model is replaced by the animated model when the mob is walking, and then comes back when the mob stops.

Basically just detect if the mob doesnt have the data of Motion:[0.0d,0.0d,0.0d], by using execute unless entity

Im adding pirates to my datapack! using the piglins as the mob thing because they have a human like shape and i cant use a player and they are hostile like the pirates will be this will be very fun to implement!

@@Bball_262 Really late response but you could use an optifine resource pack that has it when any piglins spawn at beaches and oceans they use a pirate skin you made and use a datapack so piglins spawn at beaches and oceans too.

hey Timber forge, I want my mob to be hostile, and act as a skeleton, should I pick a skeleton as a base mob? Or do I have to pick one of the five mobs you showed me?

Oh you can pick any mob in the game. Definitely pick a skeleton if you want it to shoot arrows. Keep in mind though that you will see the bow still though, so maybe make its arms line up.

Hi. My model stays after the mob dies. I have the same commands for despawn that you wrote in the loop file, but still doesn't work. My mob is a Ghast, so it's flying when it dies. What can i do?

It shouldnt matter that the mob is flying. Add parts of the execute command at a time instead of copying mine directly. First just check that the first part of the execute command is actually targetting your armor stand with the right tag(use setblock as the run command to check that it targets the right armorstand) as long as there isnt a custom mob nearby, running the command should kill it.

@@TimberForge Thanks. I'll try that. Also, my custom mob doesn't move, but it's because it's just a model, i understand that. I want to create a black ghast that only spawns in the end, with moving animation, that's all. But even if i managed to make them spawn in the end, I think I'm not in the right way.

Yes, you can create custom attacks, I will make a video on it, but basically you need a scoreboard looping timer that runs if the player is near, and it runs your attack function every time it hits 0.

Then I'll be waiting for the video, really exicted! ...one last question (hard one)...do you know if datapacks have compatibility with mythicmobs (plugin) for example to get custom items and treat them like different from normal ones. Example: Stone_sword: Id: 272 Data: Data_that_is_the_one_you_put_in_the_datapack Atributes: - damage: 2 - atkspeed: 0.8 - blabla ...so just affects that custom item and not the other stone swords...?

couldnt you stack multiple ai's like a wolf's attack pattern by controlling it's x and z cordinate and combined with the hovering of a blaze with the y cordinate?

Can I still breed the custom Mobs? If I want to make an owl for example, and take the parrot as the base mob, can I breed the owl only with melons (bc in reality its a parrot) or can I change the item it needs to breed to raw bunny. Or is it impossible to breed custom mobs in a data pack?

You can’t breed normally, but you can create your own breeding system and do the particles, refresh timer, and click detection yourself.

@@TimberForge actually, is there a chance if I use your method of spawning custom mobs naturally. If I would breed 2 parrots and say that for every parrot there is a 100% Chance to spawn an owl, would they breed an owl instead of another parrot?

Unfortunately i cant seem to get the armor stand killing command to work in the datapack. In a commandblock it runs nicely

Try confirm your data pack actually is working with say hi and that your function is loaded.

What do I have to do to run a command of an entity (in my case an armor_stand with a special tag) based on its height (Y coordinate)?

What are you trying to do? A position needs x y and z, so it depends what you are trying to do with the other coords. I cant think of a better solution than using execute store from the mob to an armorstand’s y coord, and then esiting the rest of the coords to what you want to get all 3 coords, and then positioning on that new armorstand.

@@TimberForge Thanks for the reply! I only care about the Y coordinate. X and Z don't matter. I just want to run a command of an armor_stand when its Y position is at 1. It just can't be that difficult, but i can't figure it out. Love your vids!!!

Ohhh just detecting it is easy, I am pretty sure there is a y_position part of the nbt, try that out. Just with an = sign like with scores.

Watch my blockbench video if you dont know how to get it on items. If you do know how, I show you in the video how to either attach the item to the head or to attach an armorstand with the item as a passenger.

I think the models in mods are different from data pack models, so you probably have to recreate it from scratch.
