So glad I found this! What a great idea! Thanks for sharing. I went to the dollar store and picked up two brushes for a dollar each and a roll of rainbow yarn for 5 bucks. Best 7 dollars I ever spent on fly tying materials.

+MileHigh Angler thanks! It wasn’t my idea though. This is the same reaction I had when I saw someone do this the first time. Depending on the yarn you use, the quality of the dubbing could be as good or better than the store bought stuff... experiment with different yarns.

+McFly Angler Thanks for the shout out in the video, much appreciated. You're right on the acrylic on the Laser Dub. I've been using both wool and acrylic in my blends. A note on the Anglina fiber, you can use Ice Dubbing or Ice Wing Fiber for longer strands. Cheers.

Hey man, loved your video. Yeah, thats awesome! I wasnt coming down on the wool thing, in fact I am looking for some good wool yarn to use. I want to make some wool, and alpaca dubbing. yeah, Ice dub is pretty much the same as what I used. I used a product by "fly tiers dungeon" called starburst dubbing. Its identical to ice dub, but a bit cheaper. Just you have to wait a while for it to be delivered cause its not sold to any fly shops. Just can buy online only. Its what I had, so I used it. But yes, Ice dub and Ice wing fiber would also work, your right. In fact they probably have some more range of colors. Where did you buy the Angelina fiber? I have seen it online a few times, but I can only find like huge bags (more than I will use in a lifetime) and its like $9.99. Of course thats a great deal for all that, just I cannot use it all. Is that about what you found it for? Thanks for your vid man. I hope you don't mind me making one like it for my subs. I always say, there is nothing new under the sun. Ive had people find my original idea's for flies, then tie them on their channel. It happens, and thats ok with me. I just felt if I would use your info, that I would make sure and tell people where to find your channel for it. If you live close to me, we should do a video together. help build each of our channels more. Your subs might come to me, and mine to you. If your interested, PM me. We can have a blast tying together. Or even doing a fishing trip.

The carding brush sets I found that looks like they will do the job costs around 30 bucks. There's others cheaper, but they don't get good reviews when they were bought for this sort of task. I'm thinking a set of brass wire brushes from the auto parts store might work, but those are about 9 bucks each..

I have seen this on you tube. the one I saw used a old coffee grinder. so I went to Good Will store and picked up a used one for $3. works like a charm. However, I like the dog brush approach. That looks like it would be a good way to mix it up. Thanks for the vids keep up the good work.

+T Stewy yeah I'm not the originator of the idea (I said that on the video I think). Lots of great channels and smart people out there. So the coffee grinder is great for shorter fiber dubbing... I find that the grinder can either cut the fibers or get spun up and break of the grinder with longer fiber dubbing. I've had that issue before...

This is weird---I'm on vacation in W. Va. right now and I've "fly fished" in the Potomac, going today to "support a local fly shop", have "pet issues" here with the relatives I'm staying with, and I really need to "clean my fly line". Of course now all I have left to do is raid the kids' craft cabinet when I get home. Can't wait for your next video so I'll know how to tie your "yarn dubbing" fly!

This is a great video! For a while now I've been using something called Wool Roving, I used to get it from Hobby Lobby, but now I can't find it. However it's not as soft as what u have in the video. My rolls came packed with about 5 feet, and longer strands, so I use that usually for like flies! Thanks man!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have seen the roving wool as well. They still sell it on Amazon. I was thinking of getting some for a different type of dubbing. So does it still move well in the water? Or is it super stiff?
@theoutdoorangler1173
@theoutdoorangler1173 7 жыл бұрын
McFly Angler it's not bad and I love how it comes sort of in strands already so they are somewhat aligned. The wool roving isn't much thicker but it's just a tad bit more Curley not much though. Try it out, it just may not feel as fluffy or soft but isn't bad

Hi Shawn, nice video, looking forward to the tying of that fly. I think the originater of this technique are the people that make yarn out of natural fibers. For fun just Google wool carding and see the tools and methods for this. One KZbin video (HervorandWeyland is the channel ), under 4 minutes long, shows how it's done. It becomes apparent how preparing dubbing and making "noodles" and "loops" is much like what fly tyers do but on a smaller scale. Also I think Hareline makes kit for this. Your right, there's a ton of videos and print on this subject and I subscribe to Piscator too. Btw, that GSS is actually polyester, according to Jack Gartside himself. There's many videos featuring his flys but do a KZbin search for Jack Gartside's Secret Sand Eel by the Herald News. It's a short on him tying at a fly fishing show in '09. I think he was 67 at the time, before he passed away. He reveals the "secret" of his "stuff" as well as an interesting shaping technique. Like you said, nothing new under the ⛅ sun, sometimes we're just blinded by the glare ;-) Good stuff Shawn 👍😎 Thanks. PS, how you doing?

Joe, I know my videos aren't as good as others, actually that's what I said in this video. Haha I'm doing fine joe how r u doing? I just went to the doc for some stress tests, and hopefully they come back good. Been having some chest tightness and dizziness. So hopefully it's not bad. Will find out in a week. But I'm doing great now, much better then when my dog passed last week.

McFly Angler Hi Shawn, I just wanted to share what I found about this technique. In no way was I comparing videos. Your stuff is top notch, I wouldn't have sub'd if I thought otherwise. You're a good man, I was concerned because of what you've been going through. I've had similar symptoms for awhile, Dr gave me EKG. Now he wants me to go to a cardiologist for another. Hopefully both of our results will be ok. Take care my friend. 👍
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 7 жыл бұрын
+Joe Duca I wasn't offended or thinking you were comparing... Yeah it's been tough, but it could be a lot worse. Not sure why the dogs death hit me as hard as it did, but apparently it did. Turns out the chest pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness was just stress and anxiety. At least that's what the doc said because the stress test and blood work came back fine.

McFly Angler Cool. Glad to hear good diagnosis. I know euthanasia of a pet is painful, been through it several times with our dogs, youngest was 12, oldest 17. Both my parents passed in '09 and '16. My dad's only sister in '11. I more or less was their caretaker before they went to nursing homes. But you had a son and another on the way, that compounds it. Now I'll sweat out my consult with a cardiologist. Glad to hear all is well...

I love the way that this is done I also found one that is similar using just one brush and using a board as a plane to brush against and make the dubbing but what I am having trouble finding is either the fiber dubbing that you used to make the laser dubbing with or the other stuff that the gentle man claimed to have used that he said he used but only comes in large quantities and is expensive. Can you let me know where to get it please along with the price of it? I love the idea of making my own dubbing and being able to make it to what I need in the color and how light or dark I want and or need. Thank you very much

you could also get a cheap coffee grinder and cut yarn into 1 inch strips .and place in grinder for 20-30 seconds and walla you have dubbing .try grinding some squirel fur n yarn and it makes some buggy dubbing too. tight lines!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could do that thank you John. The reason why I didn't do that, is I find with the longer fibers, that they get wrapped up in the grinder. I do that technique for my shorter fiber dubbing mixes though for sure! Just these 2-3" strands are tough with coffee grinder.
@Check-Your-Fly
@Check-Your-Fly 7 жыл бұрын
ok. I never thought about doing that techniqe for longer strands. you mix with pet brush and then card the fibers to align the yarn fibers. i will add that to my bag of tricks for long fibered dubbing.Thanks for the videos. keep making them. tight lines!

Hey man, thanks for the great video! Quick question from a "new guy" in to all this! So, I can buy legit packs of acrylic yarn (Saw a 12 pack of multiple colored yarn for like 10 bucks), cut it, put it in a coffee grinder and make my own!? I'm new to this and trying to learn and "practice" tying but don't really want to waste good money...would like to learn this "on the cheap" I'll buy the named brand stuff down the road as I improve or as I need it! Thanks and be well
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 11 ай бұрын
I would imagine the cheap acrylic yarn could make some decent dubbing. Keep in mind, different yarn has different properties so, you will totally get some decent dubbing, to have a wide variety of different dubbings you might want to try some other yarn types. However if you're just starting out, that yarn will make so much dubbing you won't be able to use it up for years. But buying the pre made bags of dubbing from fly tying shops (online or brick and mortar) might be cheaper, yeah you dont get as much, but it is less expensive than a whole hank of yarn. At least I would think. And most of the time it will give you enough dubbing to make many dozens of flies.

@@McFlyAngler I appreciate the information! I'm getting my practice in. Not sure why my attempt at an egg resulted in a goofy looking critter with a mowhawk!! LOL I pulled straight up and cut straight across and everything! Could it be not *enough* mc fly foam on the hook?!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 11 ай бұрын
It is possible with that egg, there are many ways it could go wrong, I’d try a couple more times with more or less foam. But I haven’t ever had a Mohawk fly come from it so I can’t say what the reason is. I mean it could be a number of different things.

Nice! Let me know how it goes. Keep in mind, different yarns (even if it says acrylic) will come out different. Fibers might be thicker, or thinner. The weeve might end up making knots and tiffs in the dubbing, and be annoying. I find the thicker yarns, and more softer yarns do better (for me). But give it a try and try a few different ones.
