Hi Ursula, could this method be used to emboss leather? I like the depth you get with the mold you made.
@UrsulaSmith Жыл бұрын
Hi Pamela! It's possible as long as the medium that you are using is not "crumbly ". So gel mediums rather than molding pastes are probably your best bet. I''ll admit, I 've not been using that technique as much once I discovered the yupo paper and got good embossing with that method. It's quicker and easier for me to do the yupo paper embossing plates since I was cutting stencils anyway for this method. The other video you might want to take a look at is the one with polymer clay on keather. I am using polymer much more often with leather now because I can press just about anything into it (and inverse it if I need to) (I can't remember if I posted a video on inversing polymer clay, but it is almost the same as the video I made on inversing silicone molds except instead of using Vaseline as in the case with silicone molds, you use cornstarch instead . If you've used polymer clay before that's probably your best bet. The other thing that works great but requires a little harder to deal with products are polymer plates. I think there are people on Etsy that will make you custom polymer plates and again that may be a good idea especially once you have a design that you've played with and decided you liked a lot. So for me I generally either do the yupo paper embossing plates or the polymer clay to get the best impressions in the leather and that seemed to be easier, at least for me, to make. Hope this all makes sense! Trying to give you my take on things without confusing you 😁

Hi Kat! Another idea is to try using something pen like that has a rounded end. I know there used to be tools to emboss metal and paper by rubbing it against a plastic textured background. I have tools that are metal balls on the end of them for making round divots in clay. Maybe one of these would work? When I get through the backlog of all my videos waiting to be edited (some are years old haha) I can add this to my list of things to experiment with. In the meantime, maybe you could try it too!

Great vídeo! Do you have a vídeo where You show How to do the double thickness stencil?
@UrsulaSmith4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ana! In this case, I cut a stencil on the Silhouette. I did not video the layering part or the designing part if that is what you are asking. I haven't done many videos on my Silhouette designing work. There are lots of videos out there on using the Silhouette design software- look up Cindy Pope she is really good. As for the layering here, I cut out a stencil on the Silhouette Curio twice and stacked them on top of each other and taped them. I did a recent video on cutting Yupo paper on the Silhouette for stencils here- ursula-smith.com/yupo-paper-stencils-on-silhouette-curio/ and that has a link to another post I did on using stone paper for stencils. I am working on more videos doing experiments with the Yupo paper cutouts, so I can try to add layering into that series if that helps.

That's cool! How many times can you use the made-up stencil? (I might use it for Christmas cards, and I send out a LOT of them!)
@UrsulaSmith4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joanne! So the answer is it depends ;) If it is cut from regular paper and you are using wet ink/paint etc, it probably won't last very long. Some folks cut stencil material on the Silhouette/Cricut/other digital cutter, but my designs are usually way too intricate to cut that material well. And truth be told even regular card stock doesn't cut well a lot of times with my designs. But stencil material will last a long time if you are careful with it, and wetness won't bother it at all. I personally use a paper from Dass Art called Stone Paper (here is a link dassart.com/product/stone-paper-2513x19/) . It cuts like a dream on the Silhouette and I can get some pretty detailed cuts from it. That lasts a lot longer than regular paper but not as long as the plastic stencil material. They used to carry the stone paper in 8.5x11 but that seems to have been out of stock for quite sometime :(. Good luck with your Christmas cards!!

@UrsulaSmith3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I don't use heat on acrylic mediums. They usually have polymer in them, and heat doesn't work well on that. I usually just leave it overnight to dry. Some people will use heat guns on paints and things, but I try to avoid doing that. Hope that helps! Good luck!

Can you use the plate as a rubber stamp?
@UrsulaSmith4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tunie! You can try, but it is pretty hard, so won't give as nice an impression as the softer, more bouncy rubber/acrylic material. Instead, I would probably use the original stencil and spray through it, and even rub another piece of paper on the stencil after I am done spraying in order to get the reverse. I would use multiple colors to get that less perfect look (although that is more my style- you could use a single color if you wish. You could also use a sponge and stamping ink, and stamp through the stencil. If I ever get time to get back to my blog I can should you what I am talking about- I just was doing this the other day ;). Hope this helps!!

Hello Ursula Thank you veryyyyy much for this tutorial. I have an extremely urgent question. From the two Golden medium which do you recommend more, HIGH SOLID GEL (Gloss) or the EXTRA HEAVY GEL/MEDIUM ? Which is firmer and gives more depth/dimension to the stencil and doesn’t crack over time under the cuttle bug pressure? Do both mediums dry clear by the way? Or only the high solid gel dries clear? Did you use the Golden EXTRA HEAVY GEL/MOLDING medium for the single layer stencil or the HIGH SOLID GEL? Sorry for all these questions! Look for to your response! And thank you again for this! :)
@UrsulaSmith6 жыл бұрын
In my experience, the gel seems to be a bit stiffer and probably holds up a tad better. The pastes seems to be a bit softer. Also in general, the gels are clear and the pastes are more opaque. I can't remember exactly, but it looks more like a gel that I used in the double layer. The double layer was a bit trickier to make, but did a better job at embossing in my opinion. Hope that helps!
@deepdiver8496 жыл бұрын
Ursula Smith Thank you so much ! When you say, Gel, I reckon you meant the HIGH SOLID GEL not the EXTRA HEAVY GEL/molding, as both are called gels?
@UrsulaSmith6 жыл бұрын
Yes the heavy gel. Also make sure you let it dry well- maybe a couple of days. Also you might want to try making a couple- one with a single layer and one with the double layer of gel. Also see the note earlier about misting the paper so it won't crack while you emboss. Enjoy!

Hi Tammy! I demonstrated how to emboss with one that was already dry first. At the end - actually after I say thanks for joining me ;) - I do another embossing with the design that I made at the beginning.
