Great video! I usually buy my fine pine bark mulch at my local nursery, plants love it, I add leaf compost for container mix. Do you think the perlite really significantly helps? I haven’t been using it but seems like everyone else does? My thought is that the pine pieces that haven’t broken down yet aerate the soil but also retain some moisture which is what the perlite would do…
@MapleNutz10 ай бұрын
The pine bark mulch is discomposed with time, breaking down into a small material. Microbes will not decompose perlite. Is good to have some perlite in the soil mix.

Cactus/Palm soil amended with pot/raised bed soil - thoughts? (If you can’t get the ingredients listed above)?
@MapleNutz9 күн бұрын
You can grow just about anything with this soil mix. You can most definitely build a raised bed and use this soil, no problem.

I found this lowes mulch still holds too much water and lost a few trees. I guess quality of this big box store mulch varies significantly by region. Ended up getting pine bark fines at my local nursery for about 8 bucks / 2 cu ft bag and it stays dry much better, and looks more like the soil that comes with the trees

You with the MM and I learned of your channel from the chats, you wanna get your pots off the concrete the conifers could make it possibly if you redid the soiless mix
@MapleNutz10 ай бұрын
I do move them off the concrete during growing season. Right now they are good to go right there. The ones next to the house, the sun never hits there at no point throughout the year. However most of them are sitting in white rocks and although it isn’t optimal, it’s not bad at all. But yea, you are right, they can’t be on top of the dark concrete during hot days. It will kill them in a heartbeat. Thanks for pointing that out 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I bought the exact same mulch back during summer. The bag I bought was horrible compared to the bag in the video. I have huge pieces of wood and my mulch looks stringy not in nice small pieces like in the video.

It’s because instead of getting the pine bark mulch you got the pine bark nuggets l. Same bag but slightly different name. You have to be careful. I once did the same.

I can't never, ever find a timberlake pine bark mulch as fine as yours , If I buy timberlake pine mulch I have to shift it , the Daddy's Pete soil enhancer has smaller pine bark than timberlake or Nature's helper soil conditioner ... 😢

@@MapleNutz Yeah, very, and hard on your back as well... I wish I had a woodchipper but I don't have as many trees as you do. I asked this guy at the Asheville farm market what soil did used on his trees, he told me Daddy's Pete soil enhancer, shifted Seems like a popular brand locally but I find it kinda heavy, the Nature's helper looks like the mulch you are using without all the hassle and back pain. JR maples use wallace farm clay breaker soil conditioner and you see how nice his trees are

Making your own soil is good. With that said, there are plenty of good soils you can buy at boxstores that maples will thrive in. Some of those have all of the same ingredients that are in this video. I know this firsthand as I have used them with zero issues. I also have made my own as it is cheaper, which is the main advantage to me. The other being, you can adjust your soil for your exact conditions.

I have tried all of the big box store bag if soil. They all contain too much Peat Moss and they all hold too much water. Please tell me the brand and type of soil you are talking about so I can try it, thanks bro 🙏🏻🍁🥜

@Maplenutz Kellog Garden Organics Raised Bed and Potting Mix. The ingredients depend on what state you are in. I have had great success with it and there are several Maple Collectors who have channels on KZbin who use it.

Thanks for the tutorial. does it matter if the pine bark is composted or just regular fine pine bark ok? I have heard conflicting opinions on this
@MapleNutz4 ай бұрын
Composted pine bark changes the soil composition allowing more absorption of water and can promote root rot if used in large quantities. The pine bark mulch is there to promote lots of air flow in the root system which the JMs and Conifers needs to survive.

Can I ask what is thePH of your water before watering the tree? is it chlorinated? and what is the runoff PH 24 hours watering ?
@MapleNutz10 ай бұрын
I believe you may be over complicating gardening. Japanese Maples and Conifers like similar PH (5.0-6.5 range) and as long as the PH stays within those ranges, you are fine. My current PH before, during and after watering is constantly moving between 5.2-5.6, which is very healthy. Yes, Im using chlorinated water but I worry more about the microbes in the soil more than the PH swing from watering with tap water. Chlorinated water kills some of the soil microbes but not all of them and they multiply extremely quickly but still it’s a bit of concern. I can’t do anything about that, I’m stuck with tap water. 😭😭😭
@Grinch839 ай бұрын
Before getting interested in Japanese maples I grew marijuana to be straightforward. With the amount of trees I see in your videos, I totally get your mind frame. The reason for asking about in/out water PH is because I don’t want to burn my plants up say by the PH dropping low because of the peat moss.
@MapleNutz8 ай бұрын
You will not have a problem with PH if you follow the recipe. This recipe will give u a soil at 5.5 aprox which is perfect for growing JMs and mary jane lol. Just make sure you don’t overwater your plants. Anaerobic conditions is home for pathogenic bacteria which attacks the roots system of your plant and lowers the PH below 4 and rots your plant. At that point is game over for you. Always allow the soil to dry before water again.

So would the ratio be 75 % mulch 15 % moss 10 % pearlie ? Thanks
@MapleNutz6 ай бұрын
That is a good ratio. You can play a bit with the ratio depending where you live. Hotter climates require more moss and colder climates less moss.
