Man, you're amazing and so passionate about your hobby. I have few maples and I noticed they really like simple cow manure as a fertiliser. It is completely natural, not too strong, have all micronutrients and full of beneficial bacteria and microorganisms.

Thanks. I must have gotten Phyllosticta on an emperor. Thought I gave it too much sun, but wasn’t sure how that made sense. Much more sense that it is fungal damage. Where do you live?

Excellent information, watering really is a problem for newcomers like myself (age 85) and with the unseasonal weather here in northern England, there hasn't been much rain for the last three weeks at the same time cold easterly winds have been quite strong but have not been drying out my bonsais so the surface has been quite dry but underneath is still wet

Man great point about overcare but i've been seeing a ton of what i believe to be powdery mildew affecting more of my maples than i would like. I've been trying to utilize organic treatments containing mostly citric acid to some but not spectacular effect. It's bumming me out a bit.
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz 11 ай бұрын
How many trees do you have? Perhaps you are wasting time, money and resources using methods you are seeing online from gardener gurus that doesn’t know exactly what they are doing. Why are you adding citric materials? Is your PH too high? Most likely your PH isn’t and throwing citric materials is pointless. Join the Maple Nutz community on facebook and let’s talk. I’m all about helping people my friend.

Great video! I’m new to Acers. My question is about the compost mix you use. Here in the UK, we are discouraged from using Peat, can Japanese Maples be grown in peat free compost?
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz 3 ай бұрын
Peat hold moisture. I recommend to use a bit of peat moss, too much can hold lots other water and it is why I use only about 15-20% peat moss. You can use other materials coco coir.

I'm just getting started in growing japanese maple trees and this video was super helpful and exactly what I needed. Regarding the fungus on the leaves, can i prune off the branches that have those infected leaves and try to root a cutting from them or is it better to keep the leaves and branches intact and just wait till the shed them?
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz 4 ай бұрын
Don’t do it. That fungus is temporarily and next year everything will be fine. Do not try to propagate anything with fungus as it will not work.

Why do you water over leafs xd just sit down and make the water hit earth, not leaves :D Ok nvm you fixed this mistake with advice just in time :D Also when it rains at night how the hell can you prevent that damage you show? trees love rain, so this is hard to believe honestly.
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz 7 ай бұрын
Trees are also in the ground, where they become more resistant to drought, disease and fungus. Also in the wild what you are seeing are trees that are native to the area. There’s a lot of variables on why they do so much better.

Unless you live in a cool climate... save your money. In So Calif some people get lucky with a J.Maple in just the right spot. I've had terrible luck in the shade or in the sun doesn't matter. Maybe just ignore them and get lucky with very little water/care. A very beautiful but very difficult tree to grow.

Isn’t using peat moss is bad for the environment because it removes this valuable resource from the wild which releases carbon back into the atmosphere?
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz 7 ай бұрын
Well it depends on how we look at it. Everything we do is bad for the environment. We are literally the worst thing that ever happened to our planet. Peat moss is the least of our concerns.

@MapleNutz

What types of dwarf, dwarf Japanese Maples? It so, you treat them the same way you treat your other JMs. During winter they will go dormant.

Maple Nutz, How about during the winter? Would you water and allow to dray out and water again as per a plant in full leaf?

During winter dormancy you can water maybe once every 1-1.5 weeks. But yes, make sure the soil dries up before you water again.

Heard of a moisture meter?
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz 10 ай бұрын
Moisture meters are unreliable. The tip gets easily corroded and no longer servíciale. Use your fingers or you can also lift the pot and feel the weight. Those are the only two reliable methods. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
@TontonMacoute
@TontonMacoute 10 ай бұрын
Moisture meters do not sit in moist soil for any length of time and it would take years to corrode. I agree lifting a pot is useful but hardly practical for plants in the ground. Your finger method has its uses but can be deceptive depending on the type of soil and its temperature.
