When these first came out Uncle Sam was paying about $25000 for each. You can also sub the solar cell for an infrared photo diode I'm not sure I think around 850nm is optimal and swich the laser to infrared to keep it stealthy.

Got me geeking out over that idea. It would be interesting to see if you attached a little reflective milar to a window could you here what was going on inside the room... If you see what I mean :)

+ataristaffroom Glass seems reflective enough to bounce the signal back, it's just the accuracy of amplifying the fringe that's the challenge as your signal to carrier is going to be much smaller (windows don't vibrate as much). The CCD should give you that control to choose the portion of the signal you need to boost.

i like this. perhaps a LDR instead of the solar panel?

+ReabowRotors (Jazza) So many things one could try, all should work to varying degrees of success. You would need to build an LSD or photodiode into a real circuit I feel. Although the latter must actually generate a small voltage when hit with the light.

I have a laser reflecting off glass with sound reflecting off it. Receiver is a solar cell going into a Marshall MS2 guitar amp, but I only hear noises, not the actual music. Would you know what I am doing wrong ?

Hard to tell, but it sounds like you have all the essentials

It's very cool. Have done this in work. Try using a battery and a photodiode (and protective resistor) instead of the solar cell. More fiddly to aim but better sound quality :-) Great Mission Impossible stuff though :-)

+ataristaffroom I'm was thinking it's an amplitude modulated signal and the actual audio data is on the fringe of the beam. Would be interesting to compare the signals on my scope but I'm too lazy to drag my DSO to the bench.

+The Backoffice I have had better results with the diode but you make a good point. I am using my laser diode as an output from an amp though, and "shooting" phone music across a classroom to a guitar amp output.

+ataristaffroom the ultimate solution would be to fire it into a webcam CCD (minus the lens) that way you could easily in software pick out the best cross section of the signal, hell you could even record the visual signal and decode it in all manner of ways later :) If I set my camera to 4k 100fps mode think of all the lovely signal that gets captured 😂
