Word to the wise: Vegitan leather causes brass to corrode. If you use brass cased bullets and you're going to leave the rounds in there for days or weeks at a time you should do something like coat the inside of the bullet loops with bee's wax or if the bullets in the loops are ornamental (like on a pistol belt) you can paint the brass with clear nail polish.

I was told the opposite. That chrome tan corrodes.
@iGrozni2 жыл бұрын
@@kboleather this is true. Vegetable tan doesn't corrode brass. Brass has natural corrosion over the years. On the other hand, cromium tanned leather does holds some salts that corrode faster.
@user-neo716652 жыл бұрын
Veg and chrome tanned both will corrode metal over time. Leather by nature absorbs moistue out of the air and holds on it. You never leave a gun or a knife in leather long term for that reason (unless they are stainless).

why do you stick what looks like deer hide on the inside of the vegtan that faces the stock?
@foresterleathercraftАй бұрын
It's suede but deerhide would work as well. Partly it's for aesthetics. it's a bit softer than the flesh side of veg tan and the eyelets tend to sink into it more which keeps them from scratching the stock. Some of the tanins in veg tan can also react with metals so it's good to add a barrier.

Quick question. I’m a new leather worker only made a few things, how do you keep the leather from damaging the finish on the stock
@foresterleathercraft3 жыл бұрын
The main thing is that you don't want the flesh side interacting with your stock, which means that stitching a suede or grain side liner on the back is your best bet. This pattern has that covered. The lacing should also space the grommets out from the stock and keep them from chafing, but I'm working on a new pattern that will solve this altogether. Hopefully that helps!

Hi there, I just updated this listing with a cover photo of the pattern. If you have a look at the listing photos, you should be able to see a list of materials for the pattern now. About 1 sq.ft. of each veg tan and suede is enough for this pattern. If you plan to cut it all out of one square piece, maybe give yourself 1ft x 1.5ft www.etsy.com/ca/listing/996895101/frontier-rifle-cuff-leather-pattern-with?ref=listings_manager_grid

Do you have to put a liner in or can you leave it out?? 🤔
@foresterleathercraft3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeremy. The liner isn't required and I know a lot of people do without it. I would recommend sticking or otherwise finishing the flesh side though, as it can run against your stock and tarnish it over time. Just be careful not to punch holes you don't need if you forego the liner 🙂

Question for doing cartridge loops - I am using Tandy dye and then resolene sealant. I have found if I leave cartridges in the cartridge loops in a rifle buttstock wrap, where the leather is touching the cartridges turns green - any suggestions for making this not happen?
@foresterleathercraft2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jason. The chemicals used in VegTan leather react with brass. You could apply a thicker resolene coat or try some tokonole to slow it down, but best practice would be to either take the rounds out when you're not using them or use Nickel plated cartridges. I have been using Nickel plated Brass for all my ammo recently and have not noticed this kind of reaction (although I did see it with straight Brass)
@jasonherrington20022 жыл бұрын
@@foresterleathercraft Ah! Maybe I could keep snap caps in the loops when not in use just to make sure the leather doesn't shrink etc. Thank you!

Anyone been using this design? those grommets don't scratch a wood stock over time? Any improvements you would make? Looks nice, might make something similar!
@foresterleathercraft Жыл бұрын
I'd love to hear some other responses to this question, but from my experience, the cord used to wrap the cover to the stock spaces the grommets away enough to protect the wood. I also am planning on getting another rifle cuff pattern out soon-ish. Time has been getting away from me lately and I unfortunately haven't been able to get as much work done on patterns as I would like, but keep an eye out and you might get one soon!

The suede cheek piece looks nice, but the stuff soaks up water like a sponge and once wet tends to feel slimy. Doesn't seem like the thing I'd want against my already cold, wet face when lining up my shot. You'd probably be better off covering your pad with a piece two ounce vegtan and sealing the edges at the join with a wax coating. Same deal with the interior of the cuff; I realize you want to protect the finish of the wood, but that suede is gonna get wet. Wax or oil the inside of your basic piece of leather and it will do no damage to your rifle's finish and actually protect better than running it bare anyway.

Totally true. I'm more of a bench shooter, so the suede works well for me, but this is great advice for those going into the bush.

In the Etsy Pattern, do you have layouts for Multiple Calibers? I have a .44 Alaskan and a Browning .22 That I would like to make cuffs for.
@foresterleathercraft3 жыл бұрын
I don't currently have multiple cartridge sizes figured out, but most large rifle sizes should fit. I've tested .30 cal and .45 cal. As long as the body is in the .45" range anything should fit. As for .22, I have a separate pattern for rimfire here: www.etsy.com/ca/listing/985386530/frontiers-sidekick-22lr22mag17hmr-rifle There was no good way to adapt the first pattern for rimfire ammunition unfortunately
@biologistangler79013 жыл бұрын
@@foresterleathercraft Just bought your pattern, I'm going to make it for .357 and I figured the best way to get the fit right for other rounds (spaces between stitch hole lines) is to measure what they are for your pattern for the .30 cal; then divide that by the diameter of a .30 cal brass round. That should give you a number that if you multiply it by the diameter of any round, should give you the proper spacing between stitch holes to provide a good fit. I haven't tested it yet, but that is going to be my best estimate for fitting other rounds.
@foresterleathercraft3 жыл бұрын
@@biologistangler7901 G'morning, friend! Kindly check your Etsy purchase again and you should find an additional item available for download. This is an additional strap pattern for ammunition with a body diameter of .35" (e.g., .223 Rem, .357 Mag). Unfortunately, I don't have any ammo to test it, but the fit should be as good as it is with 30 cal in the original pattern. You may find the spacing is a little more than in your estimate; if so, it's because of the fixed tolerance I add for leather thickness.

@@Serenityindailylife it really depends on where you are. If you're in the USA, you are in luck! I have found that Tandy is the cheapest place to get Veg Tan. The leather is hit or miss, so it's always best to go in person. You can often find nice economy pieces that have scars or blemishes for a good price.
