One thing that could have helped this is if you heated up the cling wrap so it contracted and shrank, making a cool leathery burn texture. It's a technique used by haunters called corpsing, because it's what the use to quickly add rotting flesh to plastic skeletons.

Just for future reference when using liquid latex, first the latex needs to be applied to a solid non stick surface second Ten layers is a lot better than three. And third when peeling up latex always use baby powder so it doesn't stick to itself. Hope that helps anyone. By the way, a glass cake pan works best to make a sheet of latex.

Can you explain more about using the baby powder?
@CosplayingwithChad
@CosplayingwithChad 2 жыл бұрын
@@cyn_na_mini Sure, first peel up the edge of the appliance then sprinkle some baby powder along the underside, keep peeling and adding baby powder until the latex sheet is completely removed from the glass surface. Remember to always test a small portion of your actors skin like the inside of their wrist, if you see a rash or hives remove the appliance immediately. An EPI pen should relieve the symptoms so keep that in mind. My sister is severely allergic to latex so I for one know how serious a latex allergy can be. Also never apply layers of latex to an area of your body such as your head, eyebrows, scalp, arms or legs, especially if your a hairy guy like me I found that out the hard way lol!😂 also be sure to apply enough layers of latex so that when you peel up the appliance it doesn’t tear, it will be a waste of time and materials and it will be tough to repair, about ten to thirteen layers should be enough for a book cover.

I think if you'd hit the clingwrap with a headgun to melt it before painting it would've looked better. Maybe add several layers of clingwrap & the heatgun it to give it a "melted flesh" look, then spray paint with a fleshy base tone and add a darker brown wash using acrylic, go in with a black at the darkest areas.

Complaining Lovecraft fans: You're right, but I mean come on, it's a pretty petty thing to complain about. Don't get me wrong, I love Lovecraft as much as the next guy, but this is clearly the Necronomicon from The Evil Dead. Which do you think has more cultural significance, and you know, means more to more people? If they had said the Necronomicon from "The Hound", no one would have a fucking clue what they're talking about.

+SamManSam You won't get any bitching or complaining out of me, as I'm a fan of the series, but I'm pretty sure Lovecraft's Necronomicon is more culturally significant. After all, it was the Necronomicon as he originally imagined it that inspired the Necronomicon in Evil Dead, as well as any other use of that wretched tome in other works of fiction. The present may not be something we should disregard out of pettiness or close-mindedness, but ignorance and disrespect of the past isn't something to be celebrated.
@SamManSam

CapNCorn It goes without saying that without Lovecraft the book wouldn't even "exist", but I will argue, however, that it was The Evil Dead that popularised it. That being said, however, I don't want to actually kick up a fuss about it.

The Necronomicon is a fictional book of magic created by the horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. It is a Greek-sounding word commonly translated as "book of dead names". It is pronounced "neck-ro-nom-ih-kon". Like most of his ideas, the Necronomicon came to Lovecraft in his dreams. Lovecraft let his friends write stories about the Necronomicon.

I'm no prop expert, but I would think simply gluing some 6mm EVA foam to the cover of a book and using a dremel to carve out the details would've been way easier... you could even just brush the latex on afterwards if you wanted that effect 🤷‍♂

Also, instead of latex you can mix white glue and water, then use tissue paper( must be white, un textured, and unprinted) to make a "toilet paper mache" covering after you've carved the face

Something to add to the idea, if you go for a sketchbook or something add drawings an other info into. Most of the DIY Props made or other idea's sketched into the book, option of normal as is type builds to maybe a spooky version of the builds placed into the book. Spooky info of the items to go with it maybe? Maybe a cartoonist version of the Necronomicon, making for a Toonnomicon of known or unknown characters with a how to draw book for help on drawing some of the outlines in to it.

I agree. The cling wrap was very in your face obvious. And the shine it produced, just didn't work for me. I think it would have been much better to take the extra time and effort and go with more layers of latex. Or.....paint a layer of latex over the cling wrap before painting. The best part of this build was the pages. That part turned out awesome. I hate to be negative about this build, but a kindergarten kid could have done better. These are better tutorials for this book available. I think I will check out more of them.

I havent made props, but used foams and such for other things. By experimenting I discovered if you brush on automotive rubber undercoating it seals, protects, foam. Flexes without cracking and can be painted, unless you want flat black. Spraying out of the can can cause unevenness and runs, and waste. In spray into a can and brush a thin layer on. Stinky. Dries over night. Then paint or leave black. It wears well too. A $5 can will cover a lot of foam. Give it a try. Actually, walmart has rustoleum for $2.50 right now. Oct 2017

It's good to see a woman for a change creating something on her own in this series/channel/KZbin altogether. Almost all the tutorials I've ever seen here are done by men. And I am a man myself, and I also make tutorial videos about crafting props and costumes from games, movies etc. I wonder why is it that women usually only do make-up and hair tutorials? Lots of girls watch those for sure, but no one else are interested in them. There are really few women doing prop tutorials (let alone blacksmithing!) in KZbin, Threadbanger is the only channel which comes to my mind now. My girlfriend also makes cosplay costumes (and they're great!), but she's not very interested in making a KZbin channel and tutorials about them, even though I volunteered to film and edit them. Are tutorials some male thing? Are men only the ones who want to build things, and teach others to do the same? I don't want to believe that! But where are all the women? I can see from the analytics that I have also significantly more male viewers than female viewers: my 1st channel has 66% male audience, 2nd channel (this account I'm now using) has 60% male audience, and my third channel has 88% male audience. Is it because I'm a man and thus unable to make content which would interest women? I've tried to think what they'd like to see, but I don't want to do make-up and hair tutorials! Or is it the atmosphere, which is sometimes too sexist towards women in KZbin (and don't say it isn't, because we all know it is)? Right away when I saw that this video was hosted by a woman, I knew there would be rude comments about her looks, and there were. I'm not a fan of piercings or tattoos myself either, but I'm not going to say rude things to people having them, and this video is about creating a prop anyway, have you forgot that! So, I'm glad that you found a crafty woman to guest host this series. Nothing wrong with *Dustin* of course, but it was a pleasant surprise to see a woman making a prop. Many video series use women as hosts, but they don't actually do anything creative in the videos, which is a wasted opportunity in my mind. About this book prop: hot glueing the pages together instead of sewing them made me cringe, since I've actually bound a few books myself, and hot glueing is not a durable method. With a bit of more work this book would last much longer time, even though it was easier to do it like this and it looks almost the same on the outside. Maybe she didn't have huge amounts of time to make the prop. It's not bad, all in all it looks decent, and I have harsh criteria, since I'm a seasoned prop maker. Personally I would've used other materials like leather for the covers, hand drawn the pictures and sewn the pages together, but it would've taken much more time. Anyway good tutorial, nice prop, and refreshing guest host (not that people would be tired of Dustin, not at all since he just started this series, but you know my point). Thank you for this video! - *Sire Sasa*, prop maker

Unless they've owned it the whole time. I don't know. Seems like they'd have a Break KZbin channel. The How To videos are garbage. Some of the DIY prop videos are okay.

I dunno, even though these aren't weapons and are more of a DIY thing than 'Man At Arms', it still kind of fits into what this channel originally was (recreating props from movies and television). It's not like they've added celebrity news and game reviews, these 'DIY' things are still pretty in line with 'Man At Arms'. Now whether or not I like these videos is another question altogether. I only came here because I really love Evil Dead, otherwise I tend to ignore these videos.

Agreed. A lot of effort and most of the money into making the cover, which is the main part, gone when used the cling wrap. The one from the movie looked like made from skin, had teeth, eyes... This one... meh

Same till after foam, used multiple plastic layers the used a dryer to heat it to make it tighten up and forced it in the eye, mouth and edges. Then made small cuts for design texture. Smooth and solid cover.

Just a little piece of advice. Next time you want to peel of latex in sheets, brush it with baby powder and use the powder and the brush under the latex to peel it off.

Looks pretty good. It might be a good idea to throw some dirt on it while the paint is wet so that it's not shiny. Or use a matte finish paint.

When you use latex you should dust it with talc as you go along to stop it sticking to itself.

Another way to achieve this look is to take a book cut out the pages and keep the cover. You then draw the face onto the cover and fetch yourself a glue gun and glue all the lining etc. You wait for that to dry then paint the front and back in acrylic back wait to dry then add a light amber brown colour wait to dry and finally light skim the details with a dark amber brown which will make the details pop out. For the pages get yourself some brown acrylic mix in water and leave in water for a while. Let them dry then attach them together with either glue or knitting!

Fair enough with using the cling film as plan B but wouldn't the outcome be a little more solid (and improve the texture heavily) by hitting it with some hot air? Like run a hair dryer on top head for a few seconds? It looks like smooth and shiny in places.

As some of that material ages, it'll break down leaving bits of paint and foam everywhere, and it won't have the give it once had. It's like the rubber coating on electric candles: after a while, it just goes nasty and stains things. My advice, study how a real book is made, visit a leather supply shop, and do it properly, or buy one already done. Yes, the *AWE me* method works for a couple of years, but not decades later. Function over faux.
