hi Digger, Neat and easy idea for a cleaning car. Some of the old timers used a similar style cleaning car but they used a piece of hardboard/masonite instead of the items that you used for cleaning....John

Hiya Dean thanks for looking in my friend, the plywood block is quite a firm fit under the wagon so it doesn't seem to move very much and it stays in contact with the rails, worth a try for sure

Brilliant idea, I may try that! Also glad someone uses electrical contact cleaner. IPA can actually damage track in the long run.

Hi Anthony, what evidence is there that IPA damages the track? Regards, David.
@DiggerEvans4 жыл бұрын
@@trainsontuesday I think the can of cleaner i use has some ipa in the formula, not sure what else though
@ModelTrainOutsider4 жыл бұрын
@@trainsontuesday I have run across several videos from larger train model channels which have said it and explained it better than I can. However, one quick quote from Model Railroad Hobbyist Magazine: "Alcohol is awful because it leaves the track bone dry once it evaporates. The constant high voltage of DCC on the rails coupled with bone dry rails leads to a lot of sparking, which puts micropits in the rails and wheels. Just run trains on your bone dry rail some time in the dark and you will be appalled at all the sparking."
@trainsontuesday4 жыл бұрын
@@ModelTrainOutsider Thank you Anthony, I had not heard of that. I'm strictly old school DC so that might be of help to me. I do use IPA for some cleaning. As a side interest, have you seen Mikes video from Model Railways Unlimited regarding possible damage from Peco track rubbers? Here is a link to the first of two videos. Hi Digger, excellent cleaning kit you have made, and so simple to create, and for the right price. I purchased a Dapol cleaning car over 12 months ago, not had chance to use it yet so do not know how good they are. I will have a go at making a kit like yours, I am sure I will have something to use by the time I build my layout, I am so clumsy...Take care...Simon
@DiggerEvans4 жыл бұрын
Hiya Simon I was looking at the dapol cleaning cars they actually vacuum up debris from the track as they go along, the one of I made was very easy if I can do it anyone can I'm sure, many thanks for looking in Simon take care my friend

That's not a bad idea Dig, I've got the Piko cleaner but it's HO scale and is ever so slightly off looking. I think with the addition of this to the back of that cleaner would give a really good cleaning train!
@DiggerEvans4 жыл бұрын
Yes you could add this on behind a purpose built cleaner just for an extra shine ha ha, this does work well but the cloth needs regular changes, many thanks my friend

Hi bud, great idea but i was thinking what about adding a spring to the long bolt that sits above the pad and against the underbody of the chassis just to give more contact. Then a small amount of weight to top. Just a thought. Ken
@DiggerEvans3 жыл бұрын
Hiya Ken, You know i was thinking the exact same thing, as long as the spring isn't to strong it should work, I will give it a try and let you know how it goes, in theory it should keep the pad in better contact with the rails
@aeroken13 жыл бұрын

Very practical and easy to make. Does the car have much weight to it because I'd think it would need some weigh to press it down. It must be sufficient because it seems to work well seeing the finger test you gave the rail. Nice video. Stay well. -Wil 👍
