As a portrait artist who is used to paper mediums, gesso made canvas feel smoother and much more familiar and allowed me to play on a new surface. I wouldnt have got Gesso if i hadnt noticed the difference between painting on smooth paper vs trying to draw on textured canvas (without gesso)

One of my friends mixing his colours with his gesso when painting his cosplay stuff and he says it hides the brush strokes and gets a cleaner look (like it's printed). But I would think the white in the gesso would lighten the original colours but he claims this isn't so
@WildCreates

It would lighten the color - For example when you add black gesso to white gesso it makes grey gesso ( aka it lightened the color) He must only add a little bit to his mixture 💪

New sub. Fantastic advice. Just because I am retired and have lots of free time, I have watched almost all of the Bob Ross videos on KZbin and I have yet to see him explain this aspect. He always introduces himself saying that he’s painting on a “double primed canvas”. I think that’s about as close as it gets to telling us what you have told us. I paint wet on wet, just like Bob Ross and Vincent van Gogh, et al, so I use liquid white as my first coat, but I have noticed when I go back and reuse a used canvas for practice, it’s easier the second time and my guess is, it’s because all the pores in the canvas are filled with paint.
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 4 жыл бұрын
Correct.... the more Coats or more Prime-ing will fill in the toothing on the canvas and make it less porous - Hence the paint will flow more :)

I work on a raw linen canvas and I stretch them myself. If you work with raw Linen or Cotton like me, I would first size my canvas with rabbit skin glue or PVA size before I apply the gesso with a paint roller. I do three coats of gesso and once they all dry, I will sand it and finish off with an Oil base Primer and then I tone my canvas with a mixture of three-part lead/titanium white to one part burnt umber suspended in a non-toxic underpainting medium.

My land! I discovered you last night and I am binge watching your videos and love them. I started a small oil painting (A week ago) trying the wet on wet and was using cheap pains (soft) and although some parts of it look great thus far, some don't, and I have a little mud. I discovered by watching this video that I should use Gesso, because in my sky the blue is just like the example you showed when the canvas soaks up the paint and it does not spread smoothly. I have also learned what went wrong with my Mountains, and that I was using too much paint. I am going to let it dry then just go over it some and call it finished. But I am learning what otherwise would have been months/years of trial and error from watching you. The other artists don't share these quick and easy tips. I have picked up some W&N Winton paints in the next town and will now pick up some gesso. With those and other tips I am noting I will show a marked improvement quickly. I should have been painting my whole life, I wish I had those wasted decades back. Thank you.

I just was told what gesso is and your video has given me the info I need to make my decision, I do have a question for you. I seal all of my paintings after they are done, I used mod podge to seal the painting after. Would using the gesso and then painting over it, and then putting mod podge ontop effect anything? I usually use a glossy mod podge to make it shine
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 8 ай бұрын
Gesso will only help with the painting process and adhesion to surfaces... So for example... if you wanted to paint on a slippery surface like metal, porcelain, ECT. You can put a layer or two of gesso, let it dry then paint on top of that. This way you paint has something to grab. Then you can seal after the paint is dry - Hope that helps.

Is this why I’m having such a hard time with my acrylic on canvas? Slips and slides everywhere and won’t blend. Then my second coats pull the dried paint off the canvas. Also what should I clear with. I prefer a spray can clear bcs I’m an autobody painter and artist, I also feel I’d pull paint and smear it if I clear with a brush. I’m using sax heavy body. I’m new to canvas but I’m a long time airbrush artist.
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 4 жыл бұрын
If your acrylics are not blending and not sticking to your canvas then it sounds like you have bad acrylics. Acrylic paints are generally smooth and blend very easy. If you need a clear coat, add varnish when its dry.

Wondering how this would apply to my own art. I clean rocks and stones, and then cover them in craft resin. I then use acrylic pens to write or draw, while keeping the whole of the stone unpainted. I then ModPodge the paint after drying, and finally covering the whole stone again in craft resin. I am about to try using acrylic paint rather than acrylic pens. Since the paint is being applied to resin, I am wondering if I would need Gesso at all? What do you think?

ahh great videos! actually, I have a few questions regarding to gesso and it would mean a lot if you answer: - how long I have to wait for acrylic gesso to dry between coats before applying another coat? - after the gesso layer dries, can I paint it right away or do I need to wait a few hours/day before I start working on my acrylic painting? - and also, how to clean the brush used for gesso? is using soap and water enough? thanks in advance! 🖤
@WildCreates

Glad I can help you out. 1) Normally you can between 20 to 20 mins BUT each manufacture is a little different (plus weather can play a factor) - So give it the finger test before applying next coat 2) You can paint on it right away once it is dry. 3) Gesso cleans up easily with dawn dish soap and water. Hope that helps - Happy painting!

Hi! Thanks for the video, very informative! I'm really interested in doing some sketching before I come with my acrylic paint, but i'm not sure whats the best approach (i'm new at this!). First of all, I wanna work on a brown stained watercolor paper that i'll stain myself at home (probably using white gesso mixed with burnt umber acrylic paint). My questions are, 1) Do you know if I can use charcoal pencil's as a drawing tool for sketching if i'll be using acrylics on top? If not, what would be best pencil? 2) I was planning on applying 1 or 2 coats of brown gesso, let it dry, sketch on top of it with some pencil, and then apply 1 coat of clear gesso on top of it, so that the sketch marks don't interfere or mix with the acrylic paint. Is that a good plan? Do i need this third coat of clear gesso or is it unnecessary? 3) Is there any better way for me to do all this besides this approach? Sorry for the long comment, Thanks for the video , take care!
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 4 жыл бұрын
I dont do any sketching but I can help: 1 & 3) If you plan on painting on top of your sketch you will need to use a Fixative Spray ( like this for example: amzn.to/2Ux94iR ) This will prevent smearing when your hands,wrists, forearms, and brushes touch the sketch.... This will work for both charcoal and graphite. 2) You wouldn't really need the 3rd layer unless you wanted a super smooth canvas ( Thats up to you and your style) - Best advice is try both and see what you like more.

There is no real answer here, it depends on how much texture you want or how smooth you want your painting surface. I would say buy a few sheets ( they don't cost a lot ) and test it out to see what you like or what works for your style. Hope that helps some

I understand for white canvases I would apply gesso, wait for it to dry then apply liquid white as the base coat. However, I want to paint night time paintings as well. It really depends on your style of painting. For me personally I would. Gessoing would allow my colors and paints to spread further and more naturally on the canvas. Making it easier to blend and make gradients. BUT again thats just my personal approach.

Hello, is it normal that after applying gesso on a fabric, it’s sandy and dusty???
@WildCreates

Sandy yes (because it has grit in it) Dusty NO... sounds like the clothes or your environment needs to be cleaned a little. Also, please note gesso doesn't flex. So if you plan on wearing the clothes is will crack. You will want to use a different medium if you plan to wear..

I´m making a piece structured canvas with wall plaster. Can I put gesso on top and will it act like a sealer in that case?
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 2 жыл бұрын
Depending on what you mean by seal....It might not seal it completely. It will add a good top coat for you to paint on top of later ( if that is what you are planning ). Since I am not 100% sure what you will be doing I say test it on a smaller piece and see if it accomplishes what you want. My feeling is you will be completely fine with Gesso BUT always good to test. Good luck and let me know how it goes... Sounds like an awesome art piece.

That I wouldn't know sadly - I have only worked a handful of times in plaster. If i could toss how a suggestion... perhaps heavy body gesso would be perfect for you. Its thick, which would seal harder ( once dry ) and you can sand paper it into what ever shapes you want.

OIl and acrylic don't mix when wet. You can add any acrylic paint to gesso ( if that is what you are asking) this is called tinting your gesso and many artist do this. I don't like the fact that you show so many Bob Ross products. The line of products are too expensive especially for someone starting out. I have been painting for many years and I still wouldn't buy Bob Ross products. I always enjoyed his videos but many of the reviews on the background and blender brushes are not good. The ones made in Germany are said to be junk. The bristles fray and the white coating on the brushes chip off. No one wants to spend $$$$ on that. Your tips are good but please stop talking about Bob Ross products.

Just because I recommend or suggest BR products doesn't mean you have to go that route. Everyone can venture off and try budget friendly or expensive. @@WildCreates I am very much aware that I don't have to "go that route". It's just that you are recommending Bob Ross products while simultaneously showing new painters how to save money by buying inexpensive materials. Not everyone can afford to purchase Bob Ross products and if I was just starting out as a student painter I would feel overwhelmed. Some people think they can't be good at anything unless they buy the best and most expensive supplies. How many people have tried learning to play the guitar, bought an expensive instrument then gave up. Now the guitar sits in the closet.

Not everyone can afford to by Cheap, Budget Friendly, Expensive or Professional either so your point sadly is invalid. Like I said before, all I can give is my own opinion and feedback from my experiences. Take from it what you want and apply to your specific needs and talents. If you have an issue with that, then my videos are not for you. If you have an issues with BR products now ( which aren't even considers high end nor super expensive), wait til we talk about non-student grade paints and supplies 😂
