Hi Erik. Another thing you can do to even quiet the exhaust even more. Is too pack the rear of the pipe near the final muffler with exhaust wrap shreds. A little bit goes a long way. I wrapped my pipe itself with help with noise and had some left over. So I stuffed some in the end of the pipe. My "yard beater" tractor is STOOPID QUIET now. I've actually snuck up on some whitetail from time to time!!!

It does sound a lot quieter than my neighbor's riding mowers. I thank you for thinking about the animals and quieting down the neighborhood. But the biggest improvement is the fact you are no longer breathing the toxic exhaust fumes. This one improvement is probably better than your current health plan at keeping yourself running a long long time. Cheers!

I suppose as a person just stumbling onto this video, it would help to hear what it sounded like before the $30 upgrade. In all honesty, that looks like a small mower engine and the noise at idle (at least on video) seems typical to me.

My Craftsman with Kohler 22hp, 60"deck is lowd! I'd considered often fabricating quiet exhaust. I hate the constant roar and so i wear earplugs. I will one day do it. I've wondered why lawn tractor manufacturers don't install quieter exhaust systems from the factory? Maybe there is a small car muffler that would fit my mower? Research. And oh how I love it when on a nice Saturday all the neighbors stagger their start times to coincide with another's finishing time. Then the high pitched scream of leaf blowers. AAAAH summer!
@FarpointFarms7 жыл бұрын
It is odd that they put such a useless exhaust on these things. Hopefully you can rig something up to make yours quieter.

Farpoint Farms I think if actual effort on the manufacturers side occurred the world would begin to have much less noise pollution. Granted there is a fair amount of noise coming from the blades and belts mechanism, but the engine is the low hanging fruit. I was looking though and there is one setup that uses a muffler and resonator. I'm unsure what the decibels reduction is. I'm going to work on this situation in the future. Space is the hurdle in my case.

I'd like to see this on a dynamometer. It would be interesting to see what effect, if any, it has on the output power of the engine. Who knows? it might even help! I have a John Deere 325 with an FC540V single cylinder engine. It is a Kawasaki 17 HP engine and has already lasted many times over what my Cub Cadet ever could. I was thinking how nice it would be to quiet that FV540V down some. Has your quieter exhaust made it less powerful? I don't mind losing a bit of power anyhow. I just don't want it to seem as though it has a transmission problem. I might not notice it if it isn't too much. I mostly mow grass with it. If anything the mower blades probably make a little more noise than the engine really. I know it is hard to tell the difference in noise volume on a video a lot of times. Do you have a smartphone? There are a lot of decibel meter apps unless you already have a real one. Either one might be helpful for showing a difference in noise levels.

Would it be more quieter to run dual mufflers
@remington3517 жыл бұрын
Dude, awesome video!! Thanks for taking the time to post the assembly and results. Two quick questions as I was thinking of doing this myself. Do you think, or notice, the addition of the pipe and ending muffler may increase backpressure and possible overheat the head? I ask because somewhere I remember reading the factory muffler is so short because the engineers designed it to move the heat off the head as fast as possible. Second question, any concerns that the lower muffler is hot enough to ignite tall dry grass or a pile if dry leaves if you were driving through such conditions? Thanks and I'm gonna subscribe too see what else happens on the farm!
@FarpointFarms7 жыл бұрын
Second question first. Yes, I do worry that the heat could cause ignition of dry grass, but so far so good. I do think about trying to build a primitive heat shield for it, but I haven't so far... I'm not sure on that first question. I've not had any issues with mine, and maybe that's because the heat dissipation of that long a run of tubing compensates for the longer distance the gases have to travel. You know total surface area for cooling vs. initial heat load? I have no scientific facts, just a guess though..
@visualartsmr.brandon20603 жыл бұрын
@@FarpointFarms I've read that using high heat paint on your exhaust can make the exhaust hotter so the gases move out faster. Sounds legit, but I dunno. Heat shield seems like a good plan, you could just pull some off the bottom of any newish car in the scrap yard. Mazdas have lots underneath.

when the timing is a little off on these lawn mower engines, they shoot sparks out the muffler. your muffler is right next to the ground now and could possibly start a fire. maybe get a long tractor muffler or something?

I used an electrical meter box fitting made of aluminum called a rain hub it is flat on one side and has a 1" threaded snout, $6.25 at Home Depot. I had to file it a little bit and drill two holes so I could bolt it to the engine exhaust flange but could only fit Allen Head type socket head bolts due to the closeness to the threaded snout a bolt head could not fit and turn, also had to file the snout for more clearance. Then I put a short 1" pipe nipple and the universal $8 round muffler from Home Depot or Lowes. The real exhaust manifold was $50 for my mower. Put some 1" electrical conduit locknuts too be safe it didn't vibrate loose. Here is link to the pictures. goo.gl/photos/hTVaHWb8fiqGEDUp7

links about locking rear diff? didnt see that in your other vid descripition from years ago... or this one, you claimed in your first vid of this tractor and the exhaust, that you were going to link to videos about how you locked that rear diff, im interested to see that
@FarpointFarms7 жыл бұрын
Sadly, the video I tried to make of the welding of my rear diff is the video where my old camera started to crap out. As a result the footage was lost during transfer. In a nut shell, locking the diff requires pulling the trans and then splitting the case halves. Doing this exposes the center of the diff where all the magic happens. You clean all that goo out of the case, and then tack weld the gears to each other so you end up with a solid axle. Its not pretty, but it works great. Then just repack the insides with either grease or gear oil (depending on the model) and put it all back together. The only downside to doing this is that when you make a sharp turn, the tractor wants to continue going straight forward. you have to learn to make wider turns, or 3 point turns because of this. I've found the better traction of a locked diff outweighs the wider turning radius.

I did it on a working lawn mower with mowing deck installed of similar design with just a 12" pipe into engine block, then 90 deg elbow, then 2 foot pipe to screw on muffler, the last 2 feet is slanted down and rides up and down on the mower deck slightly, it barely fit past the foot brake but it does work and seems a lot quieter (not as much as yours obviously), but I am not a good welder on light muffler metal, and this was so fast. . I tried 45 deg elbows but it comes too close to the tire or got in the way of the foot brake completely. The muffler ended up about 5-6" in front of back tire.
