Garden "box" on roof is an alternative for cold insulation. Solar power water pump, pump coolant under the solar panels, PV panels give up more electrons when cold.....or putting "stand off" or struts between PV panel and roof, allowing air gap so wind can help cool panel. Don't burn out (fatigue) your muscles by being on "hands and knees", use a 5.00 extension pole (or make shift broom stick) attach to paint roller. Also, when painting on "floor", you can just pour a decent size blob of paint onto the "floor" and roll it (spread it) around with roller....pouring paint into a pan is "handling it twice" or "wasting paint" (residue paint in pan) or "creating another item to wash".

I have a shipping container that I used as a workshop, To keep it cool and to collect rainwater I put another roof on top of the container with a 4 inch gap, which allows ventilation between both surfaces, way cooler than it was before I did the additional roof, If I was making a house I would have also placed insulation between the top of the container and the additional roof.

I think my best solution is to get the lathe and milling machine out of there and use the building as storage. If I'd of known how much heat the light grey would have drawn I'd of had them use white on top. It's the pre colored metal and I'm not sure if white paint would stay long. The back side or side facing West is shaded with Leland Cypress trees so late afternoon is ok for doing repair machine shop work.

I'm sure you both did a lot of research before investing in a container to make a home in. I was wondering about the framing inside, and also wondered if you had thought of framing the outside instead of shrinking your space inside?
@OffGridHawaii7 жыл бұрын
+L B Jackson we actually never intended to make a shipping container home at first, we just really needed something quickly as we got to Big Island during really rainy season. We have done some very basic framing on the interior to create wall separation between the kitchen and the storage area. None of it is fixed to the metal, sort of snuggly free standing. We did not prioritize creating the container house at first because our main focus was on getting trees and plants started in the ground. When we return to the land in September we are going to focus more on the container and we will surely be documenting it on videos to share! Thanks for the comment. :)
@OffGridHawaii7 жыл бұрын
+L B Jackson also, we are leaning towards not framing side walls on the interior and just figure out ways to create insulation from the outside. For example we are making a fance out of lilikoi to shade the south/east side of the container.

But with a live volcano above you who would build something massive if they won't insure it anyways. At least you can move the container if there is a flow and if you lock the doors it may survive a tsunami. I know the containers float for a while when they fall off ships.

solar panels work much more efficiently when they are cooler. Raise them a bit off the surface of the container and give them a slight tilt to the south. Should give you a bit more energy collection and will help with the panel hot spot. Keep it up. You guys are awesome.
@mark_osborne7 жыл бұрын
Yup, I was thinking the same thing- if they just raised the north end of the panel 1 foot it would allow the air to circulate better (cooling the panel) and grab some additional power
@ZeoCyberG7 жыл бұрын
Could always turn the problem into a solution... Solar thermal would help draw the heat off the roof, will act as thermal break for the house to help keep it cooler, and can be channeled with a heat exchanger to heat a tank of water for free hot water for cleaning and washing... All on top of helping the solar panels work more efficiently... While you can make a basic solar thermal set up yourself with mostly recycled materials... There's also commercial products... Even a Solar Air Conditioner that works similar to a Mini-Split heat pump that uses the collected heat energy to reduce the energy requirements for the compressor and that requires less energy to cool the incoming air... So it take up to 40% less energy to run the AC and Mini-Splits are already known to be very efficient... Same system also offers ability to provide high pressure hot water... Basically, remember the heat can also be converted into usable energy and not just the visible light from the sun... Along with smart design, like placing the container/house at a angle to the sun to minimize or maximize solar gain throughout the day and seasons... In their case, minimizing so the sun mostly hits the short side can really reduce their total solar gain throughout most of the day... In the meantime, occasionally splashing some water on the panels can help keep them cool until they can make the modifications to improve their system... Edit, hmm... They moved to the main island and are back on grid... Oh, well... can always consider this for any future plans and even on grid it's good to make your home as efficient as possible...
@brigittelm60547 жыл бұрын

Containers get incredibly hot. Passive cooling is very expensive to achieve and most need roofs for shade and also here....water collection. Many people build these and then have to pay extra for roofs later. Each to their own but i far prefer timber or earth to build a low cost home. Containers however are ultimately portable worldwide

@nmatthew74697 жыл бұрын
How about a vapor barrier? should it be used behind the foam panels?
@ForwardGuidance7 жыл бұрын
Foam is hugely expensive. If I were to ever use it, I'd do so in a house that I'm 99% sure I will live forever, because the return on investment (ROI) with foam is terrible for the short term and if you sell the home in the short, buyer could care less about foam meaning they aren't going to pay you more for using foam. Young buyers care about the school district, older buyers want a quiet neighborhood most of all so if you have foam, they'll think "nice" but it won't factor into a purchase.

By buying a food grade refrigerated container in the first place??? maybe
@OffGridHawaii7 жыл бұрын
+Hulagu Kahn The whole point of the container was to get something quick and cheap because we were in a bind. Didnt think to get a refrigerated one right off the bat but Im going to assume theyre more expensive and the guy probably didnt have a 40 footer. We're going to make a video soon about why we got a shipping container and what we woukd do different :) thanks for the comment!

You made the big mistake of not getting a "high cube" container, so you didn't have any roof room for insulation installment.

+JakNoir yeah :( the guy selling them didnt have any used 40 footers with two doors and high ceiling when we were getting ours... so we settled.

Just put in decent insulation... you won't have that problem.

+John Doe Yep, that's true. This is if you don't want to put in insulation... for whatever reason that may be

Solarflex is a better.
@BreakinUpBuds7 жыл бұрын
OffGridHawaii I'm not familiar with the brand you used but solarflex with two coats is guaranteed to last 7 years and it's supposedly reflects up to 70% of the UV radiation I have use solarflex to coat the roofs of warehouses and it worked great. Solarflex is less of a paint and more of a rubber when it cures.

how about build out of plastic or wood that cost far less instead of trying to fix a bad decision of living in a metal box to show the world your a hipster?
@OffGridHawaii6 жыл бұрын
+John Hales it was actually the quickest and easiest thing we could think of. It really wasn't a bad decision though considering there are hurricanes every year and crackheads roaming the streets in our neighborhood. Thank you for the suggestion though
@OffGridHawaii6 жыл бұрын
+John Hales Lol that's not the reason we chose a metal box. The reason was because it was the best option for our needs at the time. It's going to be an ever evolving project; future structures on the property are less likely to be made out of metal though :).
