I maintained/ran 3 metal cutting lasers for a prominent knife company in Oregon City, Oregon. It was so baffling cutting with a beam of light. I do understand your amazement at the water jets ability. I have cut styrofoam, solder, brass, aluminum, mild steel, cold rolled steel, wood stainless steel steel, titanium and the list goes on. You will be amazed at your machines capabilities. Enjoy your new toy.

I worked at a printing company that did many types of printing. The major type was for boxes. Like medicine or other things that use such boxes. One machine after they printed the sheets of stock for the boxes was a diecutter. This diecutter uses dies. These dies are made of hardwood plywood. These dies held strips of steel called rule. These rules had cutting profiles and creasing profiles. To cut the slots for the rules in the dies, they used lasers to do the cutting. They used a pulse laser that looked like they were small holes drilled next to each other to cut the groove. This held the rules tightly so they wouldn't fall out when the dies were stored but still move in the dies to keep the cuts and creases right.

Way cool! To check the gap between mandrels and make adjustments, you could clamp them up and use torch tip cleaners or transfer punches or drill bits etc to "measure" the gap and see where its is loose or tight... Like a round "feeler" gauge.

i ran a $500k mitsubishi water jet for a couple years. it is amazing... you can add a small rotary table or spindle to the bed and water jet tubing . we made exhaust tips cutting flames into tubing. or a fixture that allows you to perform multiple cuts on the same piece of material from different orientations...we made a 3d reign deer by cutting a side profile then rotating 90 degrees and running front profile. the machine we had required constant specific maintenance on top of expensive specific materials. the sand abrasive was only available by the pallet and shipped from austraillia so you had to order multiple pallets to run for a few months. and the tungsten nozzles wear out as you go, i forget how many hours you get of cut time but its not weeks. the water had to be highly purified with reverse os, cooled, and compressed, so filters, more filters, and rebuilding the hydraulic compressor pump every so many hours with specific expensive seals. which required special hydraulic press tools and extreme attention to detail..."like medical lab clean rebuild". an improper rebuild wipes out the pump which is the most expensive part of the machine. i have no experience with this machine, but knowing what i know about the real day to day maintaining and operating of a water jet...what is the maintenance like on this machine? where do you source the cutting abrasive? min quantity? consumables? etc im sure you already have machining gauge pins, but if not you should buy a kit at least .01-1". always run a test block 1"x2" with a hole of diameter from the design if applicable. this tells you what and how to adjust machine to get as close as possible tolerances. a tool that goes hand in hand with a water jet is a FLEX arm tapper, we had a "time saver" which is a pretty impressive machine if you've ever deburred and sanded an intricate metal part by hand. but for the size parts that wazer is making id get a abrasive brush wheel for a die grinder...it gets all the edges of slots , grooves, holes, its the honey badger of deburring but doesnt wreck anything. sometimes id cut 3 maroon scotch bright pads in half...stack them like a cheese burger...punch a hole in the eyeball middle and chuck that up in a air grinder, leaves a beautiful brushed finish while lightly deburring. but for real, follow up with what the maintenance is like and the consumables info please.

Seems like you could optimize the cut pattern so you only have to cut between the dies (splitting a pair on the sides) instead of cutting around the sides and leaving the small chunk of metal between. Splitting between the hammering surfaces may harder if they aren't mirrored, especially if the deflected stream from cutting a tiny sliver causes undercutting on the opposite side (which it does in my head). A single cut on the non-critical surfaces of the sides should make it faster to cut and save some material. And I really like how excited you get about new toys.

Hi Karl, When you start on the narrow grill bar bare in mind that you need a vertical offset on the material thickness. CAD offset commands all offset perpendicular to the specific point and that is why you got the contact stretch. tghis effect will get worse the narrower you go.

About twelve or fifteen years ago, I bought a "die filer kit" and machined it on a ten inch lathe and have used it extensively ever since. It's been one of my most useful tools for making dies finishing them to very close tolerances. The kit coupled with an old two speed washing machine motor has finished bits and pieces for almost everything I've made in my machine shop. I only use it occasionally but it's indispensable in my small shop. I used a ten inch lathe and a small bench mill to build it. I found a set of ten or twelve "die files" on e-bay which cut on the down stroke but I've made several files out of regular files for special shapes and forms. It's made from about six or seven castings in iron and don't know how I would do without it ever since. I think is would go perfect in finishing such profiling dies quickly and easily.

Nice job on the water jet dies! Thinking about the brass grill bar Idea. I think I’d do that brass profile in a press brake. One hit and done. I’d use a steal Punch and make a urethane bottom die. This way you can make them with no “witness” or tool marks. Great content guys!!

I have an el-cheap o English wheel and had the same problem with the rubber band falling off. I figured out why. The lower die can wiggle left and right unless you tighten up the lock screw. The left right wiggle steers the material left and right and that is what pulls the rubber band off. By tightening the screw you keep the lower die from wiggling left and right. I did the tape thing and what a mess that was.

Their website says it will cut 3/8" thick stainless steel which is much harder to cut and grind than mild steel at least the stainless I have worked with was, actually what I was using was stainless welding rod I think. Try it and see how thick a piece of mild steel you can cut, it would be good if you could cut at least 1/2" thick mild steel. Did you buy that or did they give it to you to show it off for them and help them sell those? That's a lot of money for the size object you can cut with it unless maybe if you count that it can cut 3/8" stainless. I hope it works well for you you do awesome with it, it is really cool.

A back fence for the profiler would be easy. just replace the 2 nuts in line with the jaw with a flat threaded plate put in longer bolts that would give you mounting studs. then and make a slotted adjustable fence. And easy to put on older versions too. One thing I think would be amazing to use the profile dies for would be to make. how do i explain this... like vaccum operated retractable louvers for a hood. like the old air grabber hoods but instead of a pop up out of the hood it slides a row of formed trim pieces under a center raised bit of the hood opening up louvers at the sides. lol my crazy complicated ideas but don't you think it would look so cool especially if you could figgure a way to hook it up so the harder you hit the throttle the more louvers would open :D
