It's time for yet more plastering and this going to take a while! The kitchen diner is the biggest room in the house. There's three doorways (with curvy sides) to deal with and four stone features. There's also lots of exposed beams and lintels to work around. Join me for a bit of peaceful plastering and see this rough shell take one big step closer to becoming a real room.

I was wondering what you were going to cover the OSB between the joists with? I've seen in some other vlogs, that it seems like in Europe, they consider the OSB as finished. In the US it typically isn't the case with finish work, to leave OSB bare, similar to not leaving plywood as the last covering/finish.

We’ll be putting tongue and groove boards with bevelled edges between the joists… limewashed. OSB as the finish material is a strange choice to us too 😀

Hi. I might be able to help on your inside corners. Take a 3-4 inch trowel, put your mix in the corners from top to bottom and then run your corner trowel from top to bottom in one motion holding the bottom of the trowel out just a little bit. Don't use the corner trowel for installing just for shaping. If it looks good leave it until it drys , if not run the trowel again, don't worry about the outer edge yet. After it drys take a flat trowel and feather edge the outer edge. Don't be scared to go thick in the corners and maybe a little wetter. That's what I do for drywall. Hope this helps. GL. Cheers from Canada.

Saludos desde Chiapas, México. Nice work! I helped lime plaster a 800 year old traditional 4 square farm house in Lower Saxony in Germany, during my studies 40 years ago and it was an all granite stone structure, with around 1.5 m walls. I found it much easier to spread the lime plaster in rainy days. Like you it took us several tries to get a good consistency out if the plaster. We used chopped up wheat and rye straw, instead of hemp. It looks pretty similar in consistency to the hemp. Love your videos.

I admire your work and determination. I saw that you are having some difficulty spreading the product. The dough seems to have little water in it and is therefore hard, making it difficult to spread. It also dries faster and when you apply the sponge it also becomes more difficult. Sorry for my English, I got help from Google😊 .Keep going.

Hey guys, not sure if it's been suggested yet as I don't have the patience to read more than a few comments down 😂 When you are going to do the limewash and need to cover the exposed stones, you cover it with plastic and then carefully use painters tape around the edges to secure the plastic and also define your lines. If the stone isn't as delicate, you can use masking tape, which is generally cheaper, instead, and then the painters tape on the outer edges only. This method is used for masking in various mediums and I think it would work just as well with what you are doing vs. spending extra time trying to work around it or using excessive painters tape to block it. Also, if you want to try it, as it would work awesome, secure a piece of denim (old jeans) to the top of the sponge float. The denim will keep the sponge from breaking down and it will give you a finer float finish. Fingers crossed you can move in before the end of the year!

Agree re: mix order - I learnt it's always best to mix the lime ( even if it's just a lime putty that you're letting down with water), and give it 10-15 mins to fatten, then add the hemp next, and give another 5-10 mins mixing before adding any pozzolan or extras like sand. It feels ridiculous waiting around for the first mix of the day, but it soon gets into a rhythm and there's always plenty of tidying up & cleaning to do while waiting! Walls are looking good, I think you're going to be really pleased with them once you've had a day or two away from it.

You should be able to use vinegar to wash off those stones. It's good for dissolving cement, and I presume lime is similarly alkaline in nature. (Given it's used to increase the PH of acidic soil.)

I was surprised you didn't do the whole room with the cover coat before moving on to the top coat on the whole room, which I think is what you did before. Doesn't it make it difficult toblend where walls meet? You must be so pleased with your progress. ❤ BTW love the colour of the plaster, softer off white looks great with those beautiful beams and stone. Can you tint the lime wash?
@MAKEDOGROW
@MAKEDOGROW 10 ай бұрын
The float coat needs to still be damp (not fresh wet, but not dry) for the two top coats to bond well. So it’s ideal if there’ done 2 days in a row. The only reason we’ve done multiple walls at once before was because they were much smaller. All 4 rooms in the small bathroom weren’t even the same as one long wall in this room. Yes, limewash can be tinted .. we’ll do that upstairs but we want white downstairs to reflect as much light as possible

What a wonderful thing is plaster. Mind you I certainly see why people forced their aesthetic responses out of the way to make that ghastly stippling on ceilings acceptable. The sheer magnitude of the task makes those mental gymnastics reasonable. As well, for ceilings the bent back and arms raised work must be so much harder and must be torture on the body.You are such an indomitable couple ,so admirable.Your house is going to be absolutely sound for many many years to come.❤

This is going to be one beautifully rustic house. Wish I could visit some day. And I'm wondering if the holes in the walls could somehow be used to hold the makings of nice shelves. Will you be applying some kind of sealer to make the walls easier to clean? Kitchens, especially, tend to get soiled by the cooking that goes on in them, so I'm wondering.

Beautiful work....your corners are fantastic. Have you tried wetting the corner trowel as you work for recess corners ? Or perhaps spraying the plaster before you use it? Also take the trowel down in one fell swoop trying not to dig the bottom in as you go. I don't know how you could even Think of painting the stones round the pokey holes white. They look so stunning as they are & they'll "go with" the beams & doors a treat.👌

Good day Guy. Watching you do the outside corners (I know you didn#t ask for advice but I wanted to share this anyway - it might help someone else...) I discovered a method of achieving a good degree of uniformity on the corner by using a damp (tea-)cloth (as the linen was a sturdy material which didnt tear). The cloth was basically held with both hands and pulled in both lateral directions whilst staying still in the bend hence compacting the plaster and forming it at the same time. I found the sponge mothod bought a degree of roughness to the surface which then needed more additional coats to achieve the degree of smoothness that I wanted. The great thing about this method was that I could create fairly large radii without having to worry (to much) about the uniformity. It came on its own - analogue to the strech tension applied. Accidentally rubbing your skin on a rough surface may be good for peeling but its not for me.
