Dear lady, I will give you a piece of advice from my own experience. When you glue the pieces of porcelain, carefully coat their surface with flour glue (water, flour, honey) and when it dries, fearlessly cover the joints with the mortar you use. The mortar will not stick to the flour paste.

How thick should be the base in wich you put the mosaic? cause i have a metal table that had glass, but the glass broke, so i was thinking in replaceing it with a mosaic, but i dont know how much thick should i buy the sheet of wood
@MakeitMosaics10 ай бұрын
Depends on how large the table top will be. You can get 1/4" Wedi (or something similar) if your diameter is less than about 18". Otherwise, you might be able to put some sort of support under. We want to avoid any flex in the substrate once the mosaic is completed and grouted. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the video. How long do you let the grout sit before the first wipe off? Thank you.
@MakeitMosaics3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the conditions you are working in. You should never grout in the sun or a hot dry area. it will dray out the grout too quickly and prevent a proper cure. Under normal conditions, your grout should set up for buffing and cleaning in 20 to 40 minutes. It should be barely damp between the tiles and resist indentation with your fingernail. Do not leave it to long or it will be extremely difficult to clean. No running errands while you wait! LOL!

wood can only be used indoors, it will warp from moisture, if using wood you can use PVA glue (Weldbond etc) but table can not withstand wet or too much moisture as PVA glues are water soluble

What is the piece made of that you're gluing the tiles to that holds it up in the table? And is that material relatively lightweight? Looking at possibly doing a full size patio table but worried about how heavy it will be in the end.
@MakeitMosaics5 ай бұрын
The substrate in this case is Wedi Board. We have several videos on the channel about lightweight substrates, how to cut circles, and other table videos. I think for a full-size table, you will want to create some sort of support system to hold the substrate in place. Good luck and thanks for being a fan!

Only tempered glass (at least 3/16"), it is less vulnerable than regular glass - don't spend all that time making a mosaic to have your substrate break! You could use 1/4" Hardie Backerboard, at most home store such as Home Depot. Just make sure rated for your climate. Good luck!

I found XPS Foam Waterproof Backer Board for Mosaic Tile Underlayment Inlays by Everbilt. I am planning an indoor table and want to keep a lip rather than having flush top surface so things won't slide off. My tray depth is 1 1/8. I cannot find Wedi board in small quantities so I hope this ultra light substrate will work. My orher option is 1/2 inch Schleuter board which is for indoor use only.

What do I do if I don't have an edge like you have with this table? IS there a way to create a temporary edge?

Always a challenge! A metal band is my first choice (find a place that makes gutters, they can make from scrap). If table has straight edges wood works, a decorative band of leather is a possibility. Look around hardware store for other bendable metal trim options, takes some thinking out of the box. Good luck!

We always use polymer-fortified sanded grout. We purchase from a number of places and any number of brands are good. Most often use Laticrete or Mapei (may have to purchase from a tile distributor), Custom Home is carried by Home Depot, it is fine too. Unfortunately buying small amounts can be a hassle, many places simply do not carry, but you can usually special order a 5 pound box/bag. We NEVER use pre-mixed grout. Exactly the color used on this table, if I remember correctly, was Laticrete's Slate Gray color. thanks for being a fan!

So simple and so beautiful. I was wondering…can this table be used outside when you used polymer fortified grout? I am a beginner in making mosaics, so any advice is much appreciated. I love your videos 😊
@MakeitMosaics2 жыл бұрын
This table can go outside, because all materials are ok in freeze/thaw: high fire ceramic, Wediboard substrste, thin-set adhesive and the table itself is metal. Polymer fortified grout can go outside. i always use sanded polymer fortified grout. Polymers are often already in grout (sold in USA) but always read label to be sure. Otherwise polymers can be purchased as a separate item (sometimes called additive or “milk”). Grout is concrete, gets stronger as it ages and can withstand freeze/thaw. Enjoy your mosaic journey! Thanks for being a fan.
