In this makeover, designer Natalie Chong shows how to update a traditional tudor home without losing its original character. Using a fresh coat of paint, modern hardware and updated upholstery, the family home went from dark and dated to bright and inviting. See how the designer paid homage to the abode's handsome wood panelling with a cool-toned palette, mid-century modern chair and leather ottoman in the sitting room. Natalie proves that with a few current-day elements, an older home can take on new life.

I love that you respected the integrity of the house, the wood paneling is gorgeous. Also the kitchen is truly beautiful and a classic no clichés here.

It looks amazing, I loved the fact that she simply improved and modernized what they already had. It seems like other designers like to change everything just to charge a lot more. The island looks great.

Love the sitting room, especially! Fits with the style of the house, is a little more laid back, but still beautiful details and textures. The cognac leather, wood, and navy is 😍

I love this design! I am currently struggling with how to modernise older pieces of furniture that have been handed down to me by family which display darker wood tones. I enjoyed seeing that the wood in this home wasn't all painted out and that modern furniture, side tables and mixed blue, black and caramel tones were added to brighten the home up but also give it a homey feel. Will definitely be trying to mimic this in my own home. Thank you.

Very interesting! I am an artist and I love color, so I had to really struggle with this. Yet you have won me over, I love the light creams, the wood, and even the grey/dark grey. I would not have been able to refrain from using some color :) I always look at the before and after, it becomes very clear whether the transition has been a success. Here it is definitely a resounding success! Thanks for this awesome showcase!

Thoughtful, sensitive, and the clients needs/desires in keeping character of THEIR home is awesome!....not who 'used' to own the home...the old owners don't own the home anymore...it is now the new owners' home...they can do what they want/don't want...Nice makeover....

Natalie, I love your work! Well done! I also have a lot of dark amber oak paneling in my 'arts and crafts' mock-tudor home. But instead of cooling it down with modern elements I went in completely the opposite direction. I went with bright gold and moroccan theme. Its completely OTT but it was the only thing I go use to work with the dark wood without changing the flooring :)

I like what she did with the kitchen, I think repainting the cabinetry was a high impact and budget conscious choice. In the kitchen, I would probably choose less chunky barstools, because they look a little too stolid next to the already chunky island, and I’d probably replace the brown granite countertops with lighter colored quartz or marble look material. For the sitting room, I probably would've gone all in and either put wallpaper or painted the walls a darker color to create this moody, cozy, English country library feel, while keeping the lighter colored sofas. Otherwise, I love that she didn't paint the historic millwork, because its so priceless and unique.

Some thoughts: I want that fabrics with the cranes-what is it, please? What is the name of the paint colors in the family room? I’m glad to see some of that beautiful wood was left with stain. That coral sofa was lovely, but I get why it was better to change.

The home is beautiful! I think that the last room you showed has just a little too much of the same tone of wood and feels a bit too heavy. I would paint the wood on the windows, so that the wood panneling on the furniture piece would create a bit more contrast. I loooove that you kept the kitchen island all wood. Good job!

I found the styling a bit bland, especially in the kitchen. It was calm and traditional and generally lovely. But I didn't get a good feel for who the homeowners are., so it felt impersonal and somewhat generic. This was more of a refresh, rather than hardcore interior design work.

So...you didn’t really design anything other then painting some things white? The island is hideous and should’ve been changed. All the furniture chosen don’t go with the traditional built ins and paneling you chose up kept
