Leveling out the vocal is the #1 way to get the best results out of a compressor but, oddly enough, I rarely ever do it. And it never fails, I regret not doing it EVERY single time.

thats the reason I generally use an 1176 into an LA2A on vocals

@@choppa24k Are they both outboard? I've tried the exact same combonation with the CLA series in a vocal chain but never really happy with the results.
@choppa24k9 ай бұрын
@@CaptainVelveeta its really down to the settings. i put my eq'd vocals into the 1176, at the slowest attack setting and the fastest release, just to catch the peaks, and feed that signal into the LA2A and i typically run the LA2A on comp mode instead of limit, but some people prefer limit. the most important part in my opinion is the original vocal. if it doesnt sound good on its own, theres probably not much there to work with in the first place.

Something that gave me trouble early on was the interaction between volume automation and compression. There are cases where you want the volume automation before the compression. You mentioned clip automation for vocals which I think of as getting the compressor tone to be more uniformly applied to the vocal. In most other cases, I apply volume automation after compression since a couple of db of glue compression often does most of the work to get an instrument to sit well in the mix across sections of a song.

Just recently found your channel. Great videos! What about compression on an acoustic guitar played with a harsh pick? How to smooth the attack? Compression? EQ? Both?
@MakePopMusic8 ай бұрын
I’d probably go with a transient shaper to be honest. Or a fast attack and fast release to grab the transient and let go quickly.

If you use OBS, there's a separate ASIO plugin you can use without complex wiring hacks. OBS wont capture the Cubase audio without it. I have a few videos where I use it with Cubase on my youtube (i'm not growing a channel, it's just for various forum discussions, bugs I find and private videos showing friends things). Google OBS ASIO for the download. OBS don't make it, it's by someone else.

I've seen some of your tutorials where you take an instrumental track and you bump it up and mentioned that it sounds better higher or lower. I'm assuming that this is within the same key or perhaps it's because there was dissonance? Would you consider this reharmonization and can you talk more about it because I think it's a big hurdle for many people that are trying to make their demos as professional as possible.

6. Compressing your main elements with a fast attack. I don't know a faster recipe for an unintelligible, buried lead vocal than this. Using a slower attack REALLY goes a long way for opening up sources and sending them up front, where they need to be. I prefer a faster attack for background vocals, myself. :D
@MakePopMusic9 ай бұрын
Yeah I used to SLAM my vocals with the fastest attack but it really just ends up turning them down because nothing comes through.

Compressors to me are just another for of transient designing. They do so much to a sound with just the limited knobs given. You really have to mix mix mix and mix and mix different types of music and different styles of recorded music to learn the nitty gritty of what they do, and also train train train and train your ear to hear what a compressor is doing. But as far as leveling goes, I dont think compression are the best for leveling vocals. Like a 2:1 ratio on a distressor or fet kinda helps leading into a main compressor and and opto i OKAYYYYYYY too but if your vocal is super dynaic with peaks just clip gaining, splitting it up into different tracks or using a limiter works best for quality's sake. I opto are great tho on non-transient/low-transient things like pads, synths, and bass

different strokes for different folks. He also did use compression for color, and a lot of the projects he mixed would've had elements compressed during the first engineering stages, unless he was also the recording engineer. If you're engineering and mixing modern music, I wouldn't be taking mixing advice from someone who did well in the 80s on completely sonically different records.
