Dude, you‘re a menace. Your game has gotten ridiculously good those last 1-2 years. And you‘ve always been a godly producer. At this point I couldn’t tell if it’s you or one of those A-list guys producing. They gotta recognize you soon and get you on a Taylor Swift record or something for you to make them biiig moneys! No one deserves it more than you on here.

Thank you so much! This just made my morning ❤️ I’m definitely always striving to get better. I’ve had some opportunities open up over the last year that will be huge when they unfold. And I’m getting to know top tier industry people a little bit more every day so I’m excited to see what the future holds 😁

Is it just me, or is the hardest part of making 00's R&B the mixing of all the layers?
@MakePopMusic
@MakePopMusic 2 ай бұрын
my productions are normally MUCH more layered than this so I actually found the arrangement of this style pretty simple to mix personally. It's basically just: Big knocking drums, thick low end, main keys cut through, tight vocal up the middle. Everything else can be sprinkled in to taste
@MakePopMusic
@MakePopMusic 2 ай бұрын
I'll also say almost NO layers in this have any processing (eq, compression, saturation, etc). The kick has Knock on it, and the main keys have a slight high shelf to add some top end. That's really it outside of the vocal chains. It's really just about picking the right sounds and getting them to mesh well.
@unknown_producer
@unknown_producer 2 ай бұрын
 @MakePopMusic Must be just me then! I guess I might have a problem with picking which layers I want to be more present and which layers I can shave off a bit of frequencies / dynamics etc. Which isn't a problem for me with the "newer" sound since it's much more focussed on bass. I feel the rest kind of comes second. At least, that's how I perceive the newer productions. Thanks for your reply! P.s. I really think that "Picking the right sounds" is an underrated tip. If it doesn't sit right.. maybe not use it haha

R&B?????? This is Pop
@MakePopMusic
@MakePopMusic 2 ай бұрын
I can't argue. All of the artists I mentioned are definitely pop r&b. Tbh, it just felt clunky in the title and thumbnail. And our channel is already called Make POP Music so everything we do will basically have the basis of a pop record, just with other influences thrown on it.

"how to use blk people's music 30 years after they did because we didnt appreciate it when they were doing it"
@MakePopMusic
@MakePopMusic 2 ай бұрын
I mean I don’t disagree. But it was wildly popular in the 90s and 2000s too. So I may have to argue it was totally appreciated when it was getting popular. But this sound is for sure rooted in black culture and black music
@FromTheHipp
@FromTheHipp 2 ай бұрын
@@MakePopMusic ive not done a deep dive on your channel....so i dont know that you've actually done a video on how black music creates trends that are eventually used(being cordial here) by white artists. although this sound was popular, it was popular because of black consumers... the artists and producers were the culture drivers and only the biggest of pop stars came over to bridge gaps(timberlake) but the industry as a whole did not appreciate it(and never have appreciate black contribution to western music).. for a newer generation of fans and future creatives, i think its important for a channel like yours to educate people on this. you are not obligated to do anything obviously...but this tommy richman hype is honestly disgusting because the song is awful and its just a watered down version of something that was significantly better and if we can agree that the foundation of the sound is black, i think going a bit further in a video than the neptunes would help.
@MakePopMusic
@MakePopMusic 2 ай бұрын
I feel you. But the reason the neptunes were the main mention is because this video is based on THEIR specific sound. Yes, there were tons of black producers and songwriters of the 90s and 2000s putting their stamp on the industry (look at Rodney Jerkins, Babyface, Quincy Jones, The Underdogs, The-Dream, etc). But all of their sound isn’t the specific reference for this video. I mentioned Clipse, Ludacris, Nelly all as artists who also used this sound, but their vocals and overall style outside of the production didn’t really fit the reference either. At the end of the day, I totally understand I’m just a suburban white dude so it may not be my place to weigh in on the significance of black people’s contributions to music and culture, but I definitely do respect and have also been inspired by that community, even as an outsider.
@MakePopMusic
@MakePopMusic 2 ай бұрын
We have definitely EXTENSIVELY discussed how most cultural trends are actually pioneered by marginalized communities (black culture and hip hop, reggaeton and the Latin community, dance music and the queer community, etc) on our podcast. I’m well aware that most white derived pop culture is just taking other peoples cultures from the past and watering it down.
@FromTheHipp
@FromTheHipp 2 ай бұрын
@@MakePopMusic i respect your channel. just trying to keep things progressive because its important. the tommy richman thing is a grotesque display of cultural appropriation and its def not fair to place burden on you to speak on it...but i did want to weigh in on that. as for neptunes, their sound was heavily influenced by teddy riley who helped give them space(and other virginia producers like timbaland, missy, etc). there is a common thread there. at the end of the day you're doing god's work. its appreciated. just wanted to weigh in.
