Indiana Jones is still my favorite action movie franchise, and in the back of my mind I have always wondered why. I think this is it- the hooks in each movie were so creative that every moment was thrilling and new. I never became desensitized to all the stunts I was watching, like I have with other action films. This channel is still new, but it is already one of the best film channels I’ve seen on KZbin. Keep making stuff!
@kylemaw9882 жыл бұрын
I think the Mission Impossible films have been consistently great at these kinds of action hooks. The Langley break-in in the first movie sets the stakes very well so the audience is paying attention to every detail, and literally a drop of sweat becomes the most thrilling thing. But even the most recent one is just filled with incredible moments that string together the action scenes. And I think a big reason why these movies are so memorable of late is that they’re filmed with such clarity that the audience can easily follow the action. Anyway, this is one of my favorite channels on KZbin, keep up the good work!

I noticed at a very young age, that Spielberg's camera moved a lot -and loved it. Here's my favorite all time hook, of course it's one his movies. Empire of the Sun: Young Jim on top of the tall building, watching the P-51 Mustang coming in. A real wow moment.

Best fight of the saga because it's so personal. Aang v Ozai's bigger, but it's the first time they've ever met. Both shows got it down when it came to hooks. Not to mention many other things. The soundtrack to the Last Agni Kai's just perfect, though.
@MakeStuffStudios6 жыл бұрын
The hooks in the fight scenes are actually what really separate AtLA and LoK a lot for me. It wasn’t until maybe season 3 that LoK was teaching that same level of memorable and creative new ways to use the four elements that Avatar did throughout the entire series. (Rock armor, blood bending, mind explosions, rocket booster flying, metal bending - Avatar did ridiculously cool new stuff, like, *every episode.*)
@danielr31496 жыл бұрын
I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with that. For me, LOK fights were bigger and better from the get-go. Everyone was already a fully fledged fighter, they incorporated technology, etc. I mean the Equalists had those electric gauntlets, the metalbending cops had those badass suits, not to mention Amon and his psychic bloodbending. Also not to mention that it could be used to take bending away! Just, shit was that awesome. Sorry, it's just that I really don't understand your POV.

That would've been epic beyond belief. But you can't lawyer in favor of the Spielberg cinematic language with everything and everyone as audience. That 14 hook action sequence with the tank and the horse would look stupid in a Sicario esque narrative, or Bond, with several examples of them overdoing it in Sequels and coming off with the pole in their hands.
@GiantMovieNerdtm6 жыл бұрын
My favorite hook is from Expendables. I'll never forget seeing the first trailer for it in early 2010 when I was 14 and I was so hyped for a movie with a bunch of my favorite action stars. The anticipation i had built in my head was ridiculous and waiting for that August felt like years instead of months. I told all my buddies about it and I got them all hyped the whole summer and I'll never forget seeing it with 8 of my buddies for a birthday. I was giddy like a school boy during the whole movie and then the part that is my hook happened. Everyone is cornered in a hall and out of fucking nowhere comes Terry Crews with a goddamn AA-12 and I'll never forget hearing everyone simultaneously clap and cheer audibly. I honestly cried a happy year at that moment.

One of my favourite Indiana Jones moments is when they are crossing the riggety bridge in the Temple of Doom. The reason I like it is because you have the good guys. For some reason whenever I think "action scene" the image that always comes to mind is Uma Thurman kicking a coffee mug at her nemesis while dodging a bullet. Other action beats that come to mind are the scene in Two Towers where Gandalf is calmly telling the King that he's in for an exorcism while the other guys are kicking ass in the background, and Ripley robo-punching the aliens' mom. Also Josh Brolin terrified for his life staring at a hotel room door for ten minutes is the best case of tension-management I can think of in a film.
@MakeStuffStudios6 жыл бұрын
Love literally all of these, hahah. Two Towers sticks out in my brain A LOT when it comes to the LotR film with the most memorable moments. (Helm’s Deep is like 27 minutes long or something and I still could pretty much recite that sequence from memory.) And me doing a No Country For Old Men video on the suspense in that film is pretty much inevitable. Anton walking past the door and unscrewing the lightbulb in that scene is one of my favorite “OH SHIT” moments ever.

Great video! What's especially interesting is the one really memorable action sequence I do remember from Batman Begins is the sword fight on the glacier - which was something they didn't have a lot of time to film, and because of that there's not a lot of footage of it. I think that limitation led to them using longer, clearer shots, capturing very memorable moments (Bruce blocking a swing and the impact of it sliding him backwards on one knee; the run, tumble, slide to recover his sword), and didn't allow them the luxury of over-editing.
@MakeStuffStudios6 жыл бұрын
LOVE that scene. And Nolan definitely stepped his action game up after that one. Crazy to see something like the spinning hallway fight in Inception that’s so well done compared to some of the Begins stuff.
@joeycruz76676 жыл бұрын
For sure! I think he learned a lot about filming action while making the Batman movies. I dunno if he ever mastered the straight hand-to-hand fight (Rises comes close), but I do feel like he was figuring stuff out with each movie.

I feel like the frantic, choppy actions sequences Nolan used in the Batman trilogy were an intentional design choice. And while I agree with you in that longer action sequences are more enjoyable--such as Batfleck's now-famous and immensely satisfying Warehouse Brawl--Zack Snyder showed more of the "Badass Batman" in BvS. Nolan focused much more on the intellectual aspects of Batman, and Bruce Wayne as a person. He did have a lot of action over the trilogy, but I think Nolan's intense, chaotic editing during fights conveyed the sense of mystique and overwhelming fright that Batman's presence creates among criminals: "A cowardly and superstitious lot." This is the viewpoint we're given until The Dark Knight Rises, in a scene when Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character watches Batman fight. Then we are given the satisfaction of the whole picture. This is his point of view. He sees the man he has looked up to since he was a child--in that moment, he is a child again. And he once more believes in the possibility of protectors and defenders. I really, really, enjoyed your video, and this is just my opinion. But I think the Dark Knight Trilogy's action, while perhaps a little less enjoyable, at times, had a larger purpose in scope. Thanks again for an awesome analysis.

By your definition, Jackie Chan actually has more hooks per-square-footage in the movies he's directed. Of course, he has dramatic & comedic lulls like Spielberg, but when the action starts, there's a hook every four seconds, & then sometimes there are hooks on top of hooks, where a character &/or characters are juggling multiple hooks at once all w/in a scene. The set-ups & pay-offs run more like a silent-movie.

Hey thanks for the valuable video and the hook concept. As much as I am learning from Spiel's movies is that , let me put it this way you can call it presence of mind or sense of humor to what action he does. The sense of direction is always out of the bow. I remeber one director called K.Balachandar a very legendary guy saying. When it comes to directing a scene, think about three things 1) what the audience wants 2) what the audience expects 3) what the audience never expected. When you think about it for a minute and reason out, it does make sense. As filmaker a sense of humour on a scene something like a slapstick one is important. I do apologize if I had commented too much but i think that is the best of Spielberg thanks Prabu

Spielberg is the master at introducing tiny bits of fun specificity into his action sequences. Tintin and Snowy getting the keys from the evil sleeping sailors is a good one. There's another moment in Tintin where he's going to bash a guy over the head with a wine bottle but Haddock takes it from him at the last second to drink it, causing Tintin to bash the guy over the head with his own hand by accident. The great thing about Spielberg chases and fights is that they're never just about the chase or the fight, they're about the little moments in between. Tom Cruise jumping from magnacar into a yoga studio and meeting the upside down lady, or the jetpack action sequence where he flies into a family's house and jetpack burns the burgers. Indiana Jones running from the boulder is probably the most well known of the series. But I also love the moment when Henry Sr takes out a plane with birds or when the plane flies into the tunnel. And who can forget jumping out of a plane on a life raft? All great stuff.

The Indiana Jones trilogy (but not the fourth one, and likely not the 5th one) stands out high and above all other action and adventure movies. Because of the hooks? Of course. But also because of the amazing David Lean style cinematography. Especially the cliff and mountain scenes! Like the scene in Last Crusade they just showed, the tank doesn't just fall of a cliff, it appears to fall of the biggest cliff in the world! Just like the truck scene in Raiders, when Indy rams the other Nazi truck off the cliff, notice how high up it was? And in Temple of Doom, look how high up the bridge was, and especially when Mola Ram falls off it and into the mouths of the hungry gators. That fall was just a mind blowing scene!

Scales are different - Basically sizes, which reflect on the shots and so on 3.The genre effort - What type of genre the director is creating - Transformer - more action/ Indie - more of adventure. Those also comes and from the applied narrative. Honestly I think that both are great for what they are trying to achieve. Cheers!

If you watch Project A, you'll agree. Chan also writes about other movies that copied his action heavily. Also in the book, Chan talks about other famous Hollywood directors who've asked him for advice in how to make action and he's got pictures to prove it.

When you get a fountain drink with the paper cup and plastic lid, sometimes you get that excess liquid that sloshes onto the lid and you have to bring it to your mouth to suck it up. George Lucas was great at the hook laden action sequences too. To me it's what's missing from the Disney era Star Wars movies where the action scenes have become generic shoot em ups.

Well... I think there are a couple of hooks in Transformers. Just in the first one I would point at the first scene, with the evil helicopter, the skorpnock attack in the desert,the arrival of Optimus Prime in downtown battle (also, Optimus always arrives late, always, that seems to be a defining trait LoL), Starscream blowing up F22 (even if that's eventually kinda pointless). I don't know, I feel there are lots of very powerful sequences in the movie (and in the sequels, even if logic goes out of the window pretty fast). In Batman Begins I always remember the car chase. Anyway, there is no denying that Spielberg is the master of hooks.
@MakeStuffStudios6 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree there are some super cool hooks in Transformers, for sure. That Scorponok attack is the one that my mind immediately goes to when thinking about the film. But I think the films definitely work against themselves even when they do have some really cool moments, with the action being a bit too difficult to follow. Honestly, I think most of the time it's just too much visual input so that my brain ends up not being able to retain much of any of it, hahah. That's probably why that Scorponok scene sticks out - awesome sequence, not too many transformers, in a visually simple environment. But soooo many of the films' climaxes are just too much sensory overload for me to actually remember much of them when the ride's done without needing multiple viewings. (And the awesome sword fight on the ice is the Batman Begins scene that sticks in my brain, for sure. Crazy how much more restrained it is, visually, than a lot of the other action in that film. Again, the simplicity of it helps a ton.)
@avex136 жыл бұрын
Also in the TF movies some (many?) times the story and the structure of the movies work against some very well constructed (at least IMO) beats. All the movies feel kinda disjointed, and all carry lots of dead weight. I feel that many times the movies overstays their welcome among many viewers way before reaching the climaxes, which are not exactly light on their own. Anyway, all this is a bit of an offtopic. The video is great (didn't say it in the first message)! I always loved that tank sequence in The last crusade, but having it dissected makes it feel even greater.
@MakeStuffStudios6 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! And agreed entirely. I could easily see a solid half-hour getting cut from most of the Transformers flicks. It’s always given me this vibe like, “Well, you spent money to watch this, so we’re gonna give you all the special fx and explosions and footage we can shove into this thing!” I’m definitely pumped to see what happens with some new blood behind the scenes - the upcoming Bumblebee spin-off’s director did Kubo and the Two Strings, so it should at least be interesting, if not very, very awesome.

I heard that Ford was tired, and kinda sick, and did not want to do the fight scene that was in the script. So it wasn't the original idea. …yep…hadn't seen the whole video yet.

A great example of an action scene in a recent movie that has great hooks is the Avengers vs Thanos fight on Titan in _Avengers: Infinity War._ I seriously have memorized that action scene beat-for-beat. Here are those hooks of that scene: 1. Iron Man drops a structure on Thanos' head (establishes Iron Man is someone who likes to attack by surprise). 2. Thanos uses Power Stone to break apart structure and uses Reality Stone to turn pieces of structure into bats to attack Iron Man. 3. Spider-Man swings by and webs up Thanos' face. 4. Both Drax and Doctor Strange fight Thanos hand-to-hand. 5. Thanos kicks Drax to the ground. 6. Thanos grabs Strange's magical weapon. 7. Thanos kicks Strange away, but Strange is saved by his Mandala shields (establishes Strange has become more proficient in his techniques since his first solo film). 8. Star-Lord is hopping on floating rocks and Strange's Mandalas towards Thanos. 9. Star-Lord jumps over Thanos and puts a bomb on Thanos' back. 10. Star-Lord flips off Thanos before jumping backwards into one of Strange's portals (establishes Star-Lord is an asshole and hates Thanos). 11. Bomb on Thanos' back blows up, stunning Thanos. 12. _"Don't let him close his fist!"_ 13. Strange's cloak wraps around the Infinity Gauntlet. 14. Spider-Man jumps out of and into a bunch of Strange's portals while hitting Thanos in-between (establishes Spidey's athleticism and plucky humor). 15. Thanos grabs Spidey, slams him on the ground and chucks him away. 16. Thanos rips the cloak off of the Gauntlet. 17. Iron Man fires missiles at Thanos while he is off-guard (solidifies Iron Man's habit of attacking without warning). 18. Thanos absorbs the fire of the missiles. 19. Thanos shoots that fire back at Iron Man, sending him flying. 20. Spider-Man webs up the Gauntlet and tries to yank it from Thanos. 21. Thanos yanks Spidey towards him and punches Spidey (somehow not killing him). 22. Thanos is knocked down by Nebula flying a Necrocraft. 23. Nebula attacks Thanos. 24. Thanos punches Nebula away. 25. Strange uses energy cables to grab Thanos' Gauntlet arm. 26. Star-Lord fires one of his electro-gravity grenades to subdue Thanos' other arm. 27. Drax gets Thanos to kneel on one knee and hold down one of his legs. 28. Spidey webs up Thanos and tries to hold him from behind. 29. Iron Man grabs Thanos' Gauntlet arm. 30. Struggling to keep Thanos subdued, Spidey plants his mechanical spider legs into the ground to provide leverage. 31. Strange opens a portal above Thanos' head, allowing Mantis to fall onto his shoulders. 32. Mantis numbs Thanos' mind, allowing Iron Man and Spider-Man to try and get the Gauntlet off. I probably could keep going, but that's my main argument on the hooks for that fight.

1000% agree. I'm always surprised when people say that movie as a whole is dark and depressing (although, the ending of the thing definitely is), but it has some of my all-time favorite super-fun fight scenes/hooks ever. Doctor Strange sprouting a bunch of spirit arms and then multiplying is seared into my brain the most, plus I don't know if I've ever seen a more comic book-y scene than the New York fight scene in the first act (except for maybe the climax of Endgame). "Spider-Man chasing an unconscious Doctor Strange through the streets of New York, who's being kidnapped by an alien wizard riding a tornado" would've made child-me sob comic-nerd tears of joy. Honestly, the first thing I said to Haley after walking out of Endgame was "The Russo's are this generation's Spielberg." I love their action sequences so, so much.

@@MakeStuffStudios I wouldn't go as far to compare the Russo Brothers to Spielberg, but I have said that the Russo Brothers are essentially the Christopher Nolan of Marvel.

@@MakeStuffStudios In the sense that every Marvel film they've made has a darker less comedic tone, which is what the MCU needs every once in a while.
