I immigrated to Canada 38 years ago. Here's is my take. What you're saying is true. Now, what to do about it ? 1. Embrace the experience. It's the most wonderful ride of your life. Immigration is like living an adventure for the rest of your life. 2. Don't feel overwhelmed. Take small steps, but make sure you do it every day. 3. Learn about financial matters and investments as much as possible and APPLY YOUR KNOWLEDGE ! 4. This is the big one. Don't stay in 'job oriented' mindset too long. Do whatever's necessary to survive at the beginning, but try to figure out, how to use your skills and knowledge to open your own business. It doesn't have to be big (although the bigger the better). Instead of being stuck for example as a cleaning lady try to open your own cleaning service company. 5. Figure out where the demand is and try to open business on the supply side. Once your business grows and you employ people, invest excess of money well. 6. Incorporate your business. Learn about taxes. Work with good chartered accountant and lawyer. Preferably become your own financial advisor. It's possible. Take courses if needed. Nobody cares more about your money more than yourself. You will be fine. Believe it. Have clear vision and remember that the first million dollars is the hardest. Good luck. I made it here, so will you.

#2: To get the most out of the Canadian financial system, USE the credit card EVERYWHERE you possibly can, and PAY THE BALANCE IN FULL EVERY MONTH. This will circumvent debit transaction number limits if your bank has them, and build a credit score that will approach about 800 (You have to have a mortgage or other major loan to get the top credit scores between 800 and 900).

Mistake #5 - Food: spot on! Gained over 30 pounds in my first 6 months. Anxiety, stress eating and all of the works. Might have even inhaled sugar like it was cocaine 😂. Overeating contributed to a decline in mental health and it turned into one giant vicious cycle. Eventually corrected the problem by losing all that gained weight and I live a very healthy lifestyle now. If I could go back in time and change things, it would be to delete all food delivery apps from my phone, cook my own food, use the internet to find healthy and economically great recipes and most importantly move to a condo with a gym or invest in a gym membership.

My second job in Canada after housekeeping on campus was at a Fast-food chain so I gained a bunch of weight because I got a discount. I wish I had joined a gym back then. Also I stuck to a small group of people who were also from my country. I lost opportunities to network but you live and learn. Great tips, thanks for sharing! 😄

The #1 reason I would like to emigrate to Canada is my health. I love cold weather. My doctors say I need more cold weather in my life. I currently live in The USA - Ohio. Many newcomers assume that you just have to be nice and friendly, and all will be fine. Well, the reality is that in North American culture, the most important personal quality is to be _COOL._ You have to act cool, talk cool, be a talker. That consists of a mixture of being witty, sophisticated, philosophical, insulting, gossipy, a wise-guy, vulgar. You have to be able to tell and laugh at whacky stories and off-the-wall jokes (and then you have the karens/darrens). But it has to be genuine . . . Canadians can spot a fake a mile away.

The survival job got me the most in this... I'm Canadian and I've lived here all my life. It can be very easy to stay in that job for too long. There are free college resources and counselling services - specifically for immigrants as well - if you feel like your survival job is all you can do, reach out to your city college and university and community centre

I find your channel helpful for an immigrant in Canada. The mistakes I have made are 1. Spending money on any thing I could find fancy without controlling my budget. 2. Staying in the same community I came from. This is tricky as I got a lot of help from people who migrated to Canada from my country when I just came here. But staying with the same people may not get us more opportunities 3. When life got busy with studies and work, I forgot about my physical and mental health. I ended up gaining weight and having anxiety. Also there are counselling programs in every university free for all students. But I took that opportunity a bit late.

Happened to me recently, they offered me $ 3000 a month from the $ 1500 I had when I got the card. It can be a good idea if you don t use all of it. With regards to sticking to your own community, maybe it's easier for girls to find Canadians to date. But (specially if you don't live in Toronto or Vancouver) immigrant men are invisible to Canadian girls.
@MakeThatChange2 жыл бұрын
You’re probably right. Frankly, Canadians feel a little…bland… and there are just big culture differences too that make it nearly impossible to date a Canadian ( at least from our Russian perspective), so I would personally opt in for just different non-Canadian cultures instead. There is actually a huge set of women ( first or second generation immigrants, who can’t stand to date Canadians). I’m not sure if that’s the same for Canadian girls 🤷🏻♀️. If you are keen on dating someone from different culture, you’re certainly better off in a bigger city - I see multicultural couples all the time

Credit card companies have had years and years to learn to advertise and manipulate. The best habit to develop is to "zero" your card at the end of each month. If you cannot pay the balance down through the billing period, and end up not paying interest then you should consider reducing your limit. Credit cards are similar to gambling, or borrowing from a loan shark.

My mistake was to come study a trades program, cooking, because I was advised that this one was the cheapest, shortest and fastest way to immigrate here and obtain a Permanent Residency status. I am repent completely! I should have stuck to a better program, even if it took longer and was more expensive, because now I am stuck as a cook, with the lowest of wages, and that is because cooking is the only Canadian diploma I have. Back home I had bachelors degree in Pedagogy, Masters studies in Family education, Expert in Crime Scene investigation, Crisis intervening, traumatized child therapeutic counsellor. None of this is recognized in Canada, and I should have studied a PHD or another Masters in the field. Now it has been 4 years since I arrived, I am not yet a permanent resident. I cannot move to an English Speaking part of Canada, as I ended up being sponsored by Quebec, and I am stuck in a survival job!

move here about 5 month ago. from a big Asian city, I'm surprised owning a car is important part of life, cabs impractical. rental market / medical service is close to insane. Many mechanism involves a line for you, middle class money doesn't work. there are good surprises too, libraries & parks are good enough to make me think tax well paid.

That’s such an underestimated mistake to learn from!

On #6 - I've seen many new immigrants mostly from India who survive on food delivery/counter and security guard (graveyard shift jobs) just to make ends meet because they cannot work in their field. And about those hi-tech jobs, there are many layoffs because of overstaffing due to the pandemic, that is also a problem.

I'm waiting on the ECA eval of my Master's degree to submit my express entry application. And ofc I have to take the IELTS even though I'm a native speaker who completed my entire education in English in the US... I'm really hoping a Toronto workplace will take a chance on me with only US work experience. It'd really boost my application.
