Always thought the Makeup Revolution business model was untenable. I'm honestly surprised it has lasted this long. The sheer amount of waste they must produce annually is border line unimaginable.

That is always what my mind goes to also: the WASTE!! there is no way they sell anywhere close to all of the products they produce so where do they all end up?
@handsoaphandsoap2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the waste aspect is so important. The contemporary makeup consumer is far more eco-conscious than those a decade ago or even five years ago. People are more willing to buy one expensive product than a bunch of cheap ones if that one product ends up seeing use and doesn’t just get thrown away.

Colourpop is not far behind. I loathe both brands but it's strange to me that people shun the waste of Makup Revolution but for some reason still loves Colourpop. Complete waste and considering the global economic situation I think there's a steel bath incoming.

Great video Angie!!! I'm a financial auditor for publicly traded companies in the US and a makeup fanatic, so as you can imagine this news is super fascinating to me cause it combines my profession with my favorite hobby. Would love to add some additional accounting context on what exactly MR's auditors found for anyone interested! It looks like two of the biggest areas they found accounting inconsistencies with are revenue recognition and bad debt reserves. Accounting rules are very strict on how and when companies can record revenues, and that process has no relation to when the cash is actually collected by the company. Basically companies often record revenue far before the actual cash is collected, and those sales are recorded as "accounts receivable" or A/R until the cash is collected. Bad debt provisions don't actually have anything to do with loans or bank debt, it's essentially an estimate that's performed by the company on how much of their A/R they'll actually collect on in cash from their customers (basically how much of their revenues recorded is actually converted into cash receipts). The revenue recognition inconsistencies hint to MR not appropriately recording their revenues based on how/when it was actually earned, and the issues with their bad debt provisions are probably that they're estimating that they'll collect more cash on their A/R than they actually will. Basically revenues are inflated + they say they're going to have more future cash flow than they actually will = liquidity issues, which means they might not have enough cash in the future to pay back their bank loans/other financial liabilities. That's why they're using their line of credit access to explain away the issue, but depending on what happens with their business in the future that still doesn't guarantee they'll be able to honor their obligations without some form of major refinancing or restructuring. I'd bet $$ that their bad debt reserves/cash collection issues have to do with their major customers in the US being places like ULTA, CVS, etc. If the products they're selling to retailers aren't then being sold to customers and are sitting on shelves untouched for months, I highly doubt ULTA or CVS is going to be motivated to pay their outstanding invoices from MR quickly for product they can't sell. And any past sales they made to Russia or Ukraine retailers are very unlikely to ever be converted to cash for obvious reasons given the last few months. That's of course just speculation on my part, but wouldn't be surprised if that's the main thing driving this issue. TLDR accounting rules are weird and MR is doing legal, but not supported by the facts, accounting to make better profit estimates than reality to make themselves look like they'll have more cash on hand to pay their obligations than they probably will without outside intervention. I'm really interested to see what happens with them next in all of this.

That’s more on the stores and what kind of contracts they have, I’d say. We all want to pay less of a coin, but I don’t really think that people who can’t afford all the fancy stuff, should be in the place where you can only buy some bs. I also agree that buying in the store would be the best, but I also think that people who’s budget is quite tight shouldn’t be offered lower quality stuff for the sake of price. You’re deffo better than that. And I hope one day this paradox will be over as there are brands who can offer good and great things for the same or almost the same price.

I don't think it's mean, it's just your demographic. Like makeup is all preference in the same way one artist loves acrylic paints and another only does digital art. You don't make content around makeup, so there is no point in you trying a number of brands if you've found what works for you. Take Physician's Formula, they cater to their demographic and what they want, and that gives them longevity. Then I started liking them less and less. I don't know if this change was just from trying more makeup and finding better things out there, running into Makeup Revolution that were worse, or Makeup Revolution getting worse all together. They don’t want to be a quality, thought out brand, they are exactly what they want to be - cheap and fast! They are the equivalent of fast fashion brands like Shein or Boohoo(hah! Isn’t it ironic they want a stake in the business!!), brands that copy better brands, just make it cheaper. Their target is the people who want a cheap dupe of a high end brands. This proliferates all the markets now, look at all the knock offs you can get today, of everything!!!! Why would they want to change what they are doing now? They are still making a profit, so they have to rethink how much but most brands are facing that in today’s markets. They are going to continue in the same path, there will always be customers for their products 🙄

I know people on you tube don't really like makeup revolution but people love their products on tiktok and all the people in my life who uses makeup but not into social media as well . I suspect that one reason is they're the only affordable brand with something for fair complexion or deeper than a medium because shade ranges are quite awful unless you go to a makeup artist brand or Estée Lauder.

You summarized pratically everything I think about the brand ! I’ve heard about it around 2015 because of the copy cat products. I bought a few products at the time, but I didn’t like the quality. 3 years ago I bought a few things again to give it a chance, and I found a white foundation that I love for SFX stuff, but they stopped to produce it apparently 😑 and I didn’t like other stuff. Finally, a few months ago I bought a few collab items for my collection (Matrix, Simpson, & Friends collabs), and I must say I love the Halloween Simpson highlighter duo, I like the Matrix palette, but I hate the Friends gloss so I don’t think I’m going to buy several products soon. I guess the strategy of Make-up Revolution was to become well known on the market, make more and more products to sell more and more but… this kind of growth has a limit, and I think you are right when you say there are at a turning point. They can do better if they focus on quality over quantity, and if they totally drop the copy cat stuff. Also, maybe the reason they have so many brands is that they bought small brands or factories (still to product more) and just named the companies « revolution something » to make them part of the group ? I’m not sure but doing this costs a lot of money, and you have to sell a lot after such investments :/

Revolution Beauty need to drastically reduce the amount of subbrands and stick with 4 like revolution skin , revolution hair , revolution Makeup and Revolution Men . Also they need to reduce the amount of new releases per year so they can really focus on putting there 100% attention on each release making sure the packaging and mostly the quality is always on point . Take advantage of the BH cosmetics formula. Make sure they are putting plenty of time between the releases so it's not overwhelming for customers and then it allows people to try and review there products properly giving more time to enjoy it , play with it and recommend it to others . All in all reduce subbrands , reduce the amount of releases per year and put a longer amount time between each release , give each release the full attention it needs so that quality , packaging and marketing are always on point don't rush it Revolution.

Well, I’ve mentioned it in some of your other vids that MUR was the one to hit me off the rails of makeup in general with their quality which was a fact I simply didn’t know. The only thing I really liked and I also used pretty much fully was their baked blush, that one was good. Other than that I thought in the beginning that there’s smth wrong with me and passion towards this whole makeup thing just because I couldn’t get the colors I wanted out of the pans. Let’s not even talk about the shimmers! Ofc, the other thing is that in my country there’s a huge drugstore chain which is for last years somewhat actively cooperating with local influencers who are really selling this, doing the looks & tutorials, and I rarely see anyone really going about anything outside that circle. I got on that rail with MUR as one of my colleagues also was selling it as smth super great and with great quality. I just felt disappointed in a while and in fact blamed myself for that till I dropped into beauty community a lot later. I’m sad to see that these things are sold as the best things ever, indeed, when everything’s changing for the good and we can buy a lot better things for fairly similar price, so, this brand also could improve their quality. We also have a beauty chain working with fairly medium expensive & high end brands, but, tbh, I don’t really see these anywhere. I just think that my country is so cheap that we need to also promote the cheap stuff. You should see them when they hear that I bought your palette for 45$ or that I bought CP palette for 20$. Everything is sooo expensive, “why do you buy such stuff”, and I’m, like, sure, but the result is on the face and people quite often asks me what is this and where you can get it, cuz in our stores everything is mostly gray/brown and doesn’t dazzle at all. At this point, I dunno, what they’d do, if MUR would actually die out. Maybe finally they would cooperate with CP. 😆 I’ve also had a bit intense discussion on multichromes with the local influencer, who was according to me quite sure that those prices are too much, and then I explained why they are like that and why most likely you won’t get anything close to that on AliExpress for just couple of euros. 👀 As usual, didn’t mean it to be such an essay, but here we are again, cuz I also have thoughts. 👀 What I can say at the end of this all is MUR needs to step up their game and needs to stop with that abnormal release amount. And my country needs to change the mindset. You’re a youtuber and feel overwhelmed by it, I’m a hobbyist/consumer, and I’m also overwhelmed by it. Quality over quantity should be their new slogan, and I hope they won’t let the BH die. I was really waiting for their comeback this month. 🥲

I once bought a bronzer, blush, highlighter palette, for touch ups @ work- wah wah- decluttered ASAP) And I do think $9-$14 is a LOT, when I can purchase say, Colourpop’s temporary body bronzer/color, which I adore for my legs, & forearms, as where I live in Colorado, we hv short, sorta cool summers. I agree w/ what you suggest for MR 100%, & I hv 2 Mktg degrees!

First off, please tell your precious fur baby I said hi. She seems like a sweetheart💗 Second, you made lots of good points. But I would say Revolution & Colopurpop are very similar. They both take the fast fashion approach to makeup. I do think Revolution puts out more though. Both brands could benefit from slowing down their product output.

It’s so true that people remember bad expiriences more than bad. Makeup Revolution made me realize I should spend my money on cheaper product if I want to buy something similiar (like Essence or Catrice). There was a boom of MUR in my country (EU) when they came to drugstore their products sold out but nowadays their stands are full 😂

I am sometimes tempted to buy from makeup revolution, the stick foundation I really loved and might repurchase, but I have to stop myself cause I overpurchase, having cute packaging and somewhat cheap. I end up with a lot of clutter because they are products I don’t love. This happenes to me with most drugstore brands tho. It’s hard to beat my highend products and impossible to compare to my indie eyeshadows. I have enough makeup as it is, I don’t need products in my life that I’m not 100% happy with.

My first highlighter was a MR baked highlighter. I loved it and actually used it up. I tried a concealer and it was just ok. The brand really doesn’t interest me when there are more consistent brands out there.

Time to grab the backup stash of favourite last available BH palettes in a local drugstore. I knew nothing good can come out of that bussines deal 😒😪.I supose they ll be Boho s shitty cosmetics cooperation and something like Shein s cosmetic will come as a result.😟

As someone who worked for boots as the cosmetic persons - I can count on one finger how many times I had to reorder stock for xxx revolution . It just didn’t sell yet had the biggest stan. It was such a waste of space honestly . At the time I did not get an elf stand and it was so annoying because I had the stock but not the stand but believe me I was selling out of elf all the time .

New BH palettes are up on their website now, including the travel quads. They also have a 6 pan palette in multiple colors, plus a larger palette. It will be interesting to see what the reviews are for these. I don't know if any of this calls to me to be honest, I was really interested to see the Iceland quad. Plus BH changed their website a bit, the ingredients are no longer listed which I am not a fan of either. But at least we are seeing the new products now.

Around 2017/2018, MR had some really good releases. The stick foundation, the taste dupe concealer. They were also collabing with influencers like Soph and up and coming influencers. But then they really lost their way. Too many collaborations with IPs but with bad design. I do wonder who their head of design is? I think the design on the packaging is a big reason they haven't been doing very well. When you look at Colourpop, their designs are beautiful and on trend and they're the same kind of price point. I haven't bought something from MR in a while, but I will not lie, I'd be sad to see it go as it is so affordable for some people.

Probably the acquisition of bh Cosmetics did not help their bottom line. They own a fabulous formula....why not use it? Didn't you find a highlighter from XX Revolution (or one of the million sub brands) that you really liked a while back? 🤔 I own two MUR palettes....Emily Noel, and SophX. They are decent enough.. The product I REALLY love is the Fast Base stick foundation! I see what you mean about the shades though.. I'm very fair and I can wear any shade from F1 to F4! This was an insightful video... thank you..💛

They put a sour taste in my mouth when I realized they were doing the duping/basically IP theft thing. I haven't purchased from them in many years and have no plans to. They also give me real sweatshop vibes. We may roast Colourpop daily but at least their quality isn't consistently dogpoo. 😒 No tears shed here for the brand. Step it up in quality or get left in the dust, folks.

Omg! I refuse to purchase anything revolution due to the customer service. The last time I ordered from them I had two products that I felt “went bad”. A lip gloss that had beads in it and smelled icky and a vitamin c serum that was brown and smelled. It took two weeks to get an $11 refund. Back and forth I sent pictures of everything. I never return products but this I felt was needed in case others were using expired products. They were very vague and kept giving me the run around. I have never returned before and they said they needed to make sure it wasn’t fraud. I’m like look at my account I’ve never returned anything. I’m done with that brand!

I really enjoyed Makeup Revolution at the start. I also found the founder to be lovely but his interaction and personalisation seemed to fade away. I then realised how bad ‘fast makeup’ is for the environment so now I try to be as minimal waste as possible. Not to mention a lot of ingredients in a lot of brand’s Makeup including theirs started to cause skin issues for me. I gave away nearly all of my collection except for some eyeshadow palettes and a couple of highlighters. If they focused on one Makeup line instead of multiple and moved to greener ingredients with biodegradable packaging/refills I would certainly try them again. Definitely not a fan of Boohoo.

@girlwhomustnotbenamed41392 жыл бұрын
Exactly. They wouldn't even need to do that much, just improve their formula to a decent quality. I give them credit for releasing more than just warm toned neutrals (aka oranges) like most other brands on the market but I can't do much with a beautiful colour story if the formula isn't usable. I bought one of their 18-pan Halloween palettes last year but literally all the shades hard panned after the first use, mattes and shimmers alike. I've tried everything, scraping, scotch taping you name it but nothing helps, so I basically threw that money out the window. It doesn't exactly inspire trust in the brand but at the same time it seems like such an unforced error. Even the cheapest brands can produce sg that at least works, and MR is not *that* cheap in drugstore terms.

I was one of those that purchased everything at the start. I was invited to a few of their birthday events and Halloween events. Had a lot of fun at them and became friendly with Mr Minto he seemed lovely at the time. I had people asking if I was part of team Revolution due to the time we would spend chatting. But that same interaction isn’t there anymore and there’s too many releases now. Often products are repackaged also. I had a cream blush palette from them about 6 months later they launched a “new” blush palette but it was shade for shade the exact same and the same formula. They then stopped inviting smaller influencers/bloggers to just invite those with a large following. I now have very little Revolution in my collection. Some of the products were good but would not last as long. Like the brow pomade it would dry out quickly. I loved the freedom brow powder kit which I still have a back up of. I also still love the conceal and define concealer. I think they need to change how they do their business model and interaction as they launch too much for public consumption

I would love to be a fly on the wall at the location of whoever at Revolution is making the decisions for the brand. I cannot comprehend, from a business perspective, why they are making the decisions they are making. And now they have their hands on BH cosmetics? Somebody better wake up there and do so very fast. IMO I have the same creme bronzer you do and the Looney Tunes makeup bag. Nothing else. And the bronzer was reviewed by a YT’er I trust, otherwise I wouldn’t have even given that the chance? ❤️

Makeup Revolution’s high point was the Soph collabs. I have used their eye primer for a long time and it’s solid. Everything else I’ve ever purchased from them is no longer in my collection. Cut the 5 million sub brands. Go back to just being Makeup Revolution and focus on quality. Wet n Wild is doing better quality items than MUR right now. I don’t buy a lot of drugstore palettes, but I love Stitch and WnW killed it with that collab. They should take ColourPop as a model and dial it back like 10 notches at least, like MAYBE a release or 2 per month (if that is the kind of brand they want to be) max.. and just be one brand, no spin-offs. It would benefit them tremendously to use that extra money to develop formulas that meet baseline quality that is at least wearable. And obviously don’t copy other brands. People exist that will be loyal to them, even with the shady history (I mean I read those trendmood comments on that JS collection 👀I would have assumed no one supported him anymore🤷🏻♀️), if they can get it together/dial it back and figure out their niche. No one wants to waste money on a product they can’t use because it is so shite, no matter how cheap it is. I hope they use all this social media attention as an opportunity to redirect and do better!

I have tried 2 things I like from them--the renaissance flick eyeliner (holy grail status for that one) and the "super dewy" skin tint. The quotation marks are mine because, although I did end up liking it, it was not even dewy, much less SUPER dewy. It's actually pretty matte, but it works okay on my dry skin if I use an oil and a heavy moisturizer in my prep.

I'm literally surprised that this brand is still making any kind of money. I have only one product from MUR and lucky me it's great quality red lipstick, but even though I so far had good experience with the brand I have zero interest in buying anything else since 1) nobody really talks about their products anymore so I don't even know what they're releasing 2) most things get negative reviews 3) 90% of their stuff is ugly and not appealing at all

I like the powder bronzer in the large golden compact and the brightener concealer that has the sponge end which looks like a CT dupe. Their glosses in the short stubby tube are good too. Nothing is good from XX Revolution that I have tried. Boohoo are taking over everything at the moment as Debenhams was a high street department store and now they are online only and a lot of product sold online there now is Boohoo.

I remember when MUR was basically a Too Faced knock off brand. Here in their home the UK there would be whole displays of the copycat chocolate bar palettes and the heart blushes amd highlighters in stores and they were awful just like chalk. They still try to copy anything they like, the Charlotte Tilbury highlighter etc.. Ironically the items they don't copy like their foundations and concealers are some of their best products. I recently tried a couple of their blushes the liquid blush bomb pretty much disappeared on my super pale skin, the tube one is pretty good. I just don't like MUR much if I'm honest, but every couple of years I'll give them a try, just to see if they've improved. I much prefer ELF in that price range and for eyeshadow at low prices BH Cosmetics had it down. I love them like I love high end formulas.

I think that Makeup Revolution, in all of its iterations, should restrategize and do some serious reformulating. I have a few products from the brand that I do enjoy. I have a pressed powder bronzer that I use as setting powder, it leans light/medium and is too light to bronze with, for me. It was in a gift bundle and I use it most of the time. I have a couple of pressed powder highlighter palettes, that I really like. Other than that, I'm not really into any of their product lines. They need to take a step back and look into why their products aren't selling, like they should. They also need to reformulate.

I see a lot of people saying that they would rather buy make-up online than make up Revolution. The thing is, you are thinking with the mind of a beauty enthusiast, if you are here on a youtube video it means that you are knowledgeable about this stuff. But when normal people go to the drugstore (here in Italy) they mostly only find the absolutely overpriced l'oreal and maybelline (20€ for a foundation!!!), Catrice and essence, and if they are "normal" people they won't go shop make-up online. They don't know what a good eyeshadow formula is, when i started out i had 3 palettes from makeup Revolution and to me at that time that formula was fine cause i didn't know what a good eyeshadow formula was. Now none of those 3 is in my collection, but I see why in europe the sales are not that bad.

I bought the two smaller Matrix palettes. One was more bright and poppy, and the other was deep and gloomy.... and I made the exact same eye look with both palettes. On accident. And I hated the experience. The video is on my channel. I paid full price, and didn't get the Red Pill, Blue Pill palette because that sucker is just TOO large... and the only purpose it serves me is of a reminder that I do not have to buy everything and just because it's a franchise I adore... doesn't mean it's going to be good. If Fenty/Melt/TooFaced/NYX/Morphe came out with a Matrix Collection I would get it in a heartbeat, but because these brands for the faults, they have delivered on quality products where MakeupRevolution has always been something I've thrown out.
