My grandpa passed away a few months ago. My cousin went to build-a-bear and used some of his voicemails and videos to make the sound bits for the bear. My cousin gave the bear to our grandma so she can always hear our grandpa saying he loves her and also has his big laugh. Thought I'd share cause it's so smart and wholesome

As someone who took a class dedicated to genetics I can tell you that CRISPR is 99% used for helping reverse conditions already present in people and not for modifying babies. Muscular dystrophy mutations are commonly helped by CRISPR therapy

I’m very interested in this as my cousins have MD Duchenne’s. As far as I can determine, recent research suggests that CRISPR splicing can cause cancers, so we may not have a great solution yet. The only solution I can find is to ensure the egg is female and only a carrier. But then she would have to have gene screening/IVF too.. which seems awfully selfish.. it’s a huge topic I love to learn about but struggle to. Eugenics seems to be a sensitive subject, I’m really happy that Bailey has covered this.

Whether you believe it or not doesn't really matter or change the validity of the reality, but the Greys that "crashed " in Roswell in the 40s are actually humans from a parallel reality that had lost the ability to procreate due to gene editing and cloning. Not to mention the law of attraction. I wouldn't want to attract hubris.

They did say it was for future genetic testing to demolish abnormalities or DNA issues. The examples I was given were dementia and cerebral palsy. I did. Now watching this, I'm kinda questioning my decision... I wanted to help or help cure, but who knows what they have done with it.

I was looking for this comment. A lot of people misunderstand “survival of the fittest” as biggest or strongest. But if you think about something as simple as the biggest dandelions on a lawn, those are the ones the lawnmower gets before they can become a puff of seeds. Only the short, small dandelions live long enough to reproduce.

I am a parent of a 6 yr old child with a genetic condition (down syndrome). B is also autistic. He is not what anyone would have deemed a "perfect" baby, but he is wonderful, and amazing and full of so much joy and fun!!! There is a place in this world for difference and diversity. Without that, the world would miss out on a whole lot of beauty! My son also has alot of medical conditions, those, if i could i would take them away in a heartbeat! But i would never take away his down syndrome or his asd. He would simply not be - him! And he is such an amazing person, exactly how he is!! I think this is such a tricky area and topic. If there aren't really strict ethics around it there is such a potential for harm, and screening out entire groups of people based on albeist views!

It was genius to create this story telling while you make up. I guess you combined your two passions, that is really original. When I found out about your work, I was thrilled to see that some people can really come with some very unique ideas in a world where everybody does pretty much the same as everybody else. I love your sense of innovation and your way of capturing our attention. It is a real gift. I am generally not very patient listening to stories as I hear a lot in courts but you are the exception. Thank you very much for telling the stories of all these people, tragic stories for the most. Very soon, your videos will be diffused in criminology classes. We never know. So open honesty time...this way of thinking is still alive and functioning, and a part of how I was raised. Every day I combat it in my brain, even actively, right now, when I'm listening to your podcast, Bailey. The most important things I remind myself (besides remembering what survival of the fittest actually means) is that 1. You never know what genetic mutation may put a human at an advantage in our ever-changing world. And 2. Were it not for modern advantages, I probably wouldn't have been fit to survive to this point 😂

Heads-up in case you ever get to create your own CRISPR baby, 6'8" is so tall it's going to be kind of annoying for them. I'm a minuscule 6'2" and that's right at the cusp where door frames and ceiling fans start to feel threatening.

When she was talking about the university recruits for sperm...I remembered something from when I was in college. I was a student at UC Berkeley in the early 2000's and I saw an ad in the school newspaper for egg "donors" who would donate their egg to a couple looking for $25k. In 2004, $25k was a lot more money than it is today. Anyway, the ad required the "donor" to be of Jewish descent, over 5'5 (I think...it's been a long time since but I remember there was a height minimum requirement), and SAT score requirement. Guess there wasn't a designer egg lab at the time so folks had to place ads out for themselves. Clever to place it in well regarded Univiersity papers!

Hi Bailey. I am a fan of your channels. I enjoy every new episode. Such a witty, humorous, and informative material. I was hoping you'd incorporate the Planned Parenthood in this episode too. They have contributed a lot in the eugenics.

Hey Bailey, love your shows. Few people in my circle are fans of yours. No. I recommend talking about the Koch family! Less than fun fact I was at an Indiana amusement park called Holiday World I used to enjoy because it offered access to water park with entrance to amusement park, free sunscreen and free soda. I did complain about the waste of paper products for the free soda but then again 😅 I was complicit in the crime.. On my exit out last time, I finally noticed the placard saying something like thank you for visiting from the Koch family…. My heart sunk. I avoid their paper products (which is hard to do) and there I was ground zero in enemy territory 🤦🏻‍♀️

Eugenics was popular in Vermont in the 1930s-1950s. University of Vermont professor Perkins targeted Franco-Americans (French speaking Americans from Canada), “Gypsies/Pirates”, and Abenaki Indigenous people. They were lumped into a category of being “mentally feeble “. 🙄 The level of “dark” here is insane. If anyone could shine a light on this, and have it reach the multitudes in language that non-scholars understand, I believe that’s you and your team Ms Sarian! 💙 I would love to see this as an episode!

Oh wow. My maternal grandmother was from Vermont (born in 1911 and raised in Isle la Motte). Her maternal grandmother (my great great grandmother?) was Abenaki (family dark story about how she was basically kidnapped, r*ped, and forced to marry my great great grandfather; these things supposedly happened often in the 1800s according to my grandmother). Your comment reminded me of the stories (secrets) my grandmother told me about our family history.

@@k8tinaI’m so sorry. That must have been horrible for her! Have you tried building your genealogical tree on her side? It can be “freeing” and gives your ancestress her voice. 🙂

Bailey - recently finished the book A Fatal Inheritance: How a Family Misfortune Revealed a Deadly Medical.Mustery the author talks about CRISPR and it's ability to modify genes for certain cancers. And, yes, the long term effects of altering someone's DNA are unknown. As someone who is in a complete remission with a rare blood cancer I want research to continue. For many gene therapy is the answer to their cancer treatment. CRISPR being used to design the perfect baby is repulsive.

Theres an episode of Star Trek: Voyager (s07ep11, Lineage) that deals with technological intervention in fetal development. It always stuck with me as a really interesting exploration of the kinds of emotions that might be attached to a parent wanting to, like, erase part of themself from the fetal development (B'Elanna, the mother, basically doesnt want her Klingon genes making life difficult for her half Klingon/half human child). It's a really striking episode and one of those things that really solidified my love of the Star Trek franchise, in general, and the Voyager show, specifically.

I’m very much for “designer” babies but more for the sense that I have genetic health problems that I don’t want my child to have to go through. Obviously if there’s no health benefits of doing it to improve the child’s quality of life then there’s no reason to do it.

I remember when I watched a new breed of bulldog happen, the Blue Merle. The breed isn'taccepted or recognized by the AKC, yet. It's something I think about often, the designer babies. The clones. The need for a fountain of youth. What happens if you want a refund because your baby's eyes aren't green enough?

The word "Mensa," as used by the international high IQ society, indeed comes from Latin, where it means "table." The society chose this name because it represents a round table where members of all backgrounds can come together as equals, regardless of their other differences. The idea was to symbolize that the organization is a meeting place for intellectuals, a space where ideas can be exchanged openly and freely.
