As someone who took a class dedicated to genetics I can tell you that CRISPR is 99% used for helping reverse conditions already present in people and not for modifying babies. Muscular dystrophy mutations are commonly helped by CRISPR therapy
@caitlinsadiemay32104 ай бұрын
I’m very interested in this as my cousins have MD Duchenne’s. As far as I can determine, recent research suggests that CRISPR splicing can cause cancers, so we may not have a great solution yet. The only solution I can find is to ensure the egg is female and only a carrier. But then she would have to have gene screening/IVF too.. which seems awfully selfish.. it’s a huge topic I love to learn about but struggle to. Eugenics seems to be a sensitive subject, I’m really happy that Bailey has covered this.

When she was talking about the university recruits for sperm...I remembered something from when I was in college. I was a student at UC Berkeley in the early 2000's and I saw an ad in the school newspaper for egg "donors" who would donate their egg to a couple looking for $25k. In 2004, $25k was a lot more money than it is today. Anyway, the ad required the "donor" to be of Jewish descent, over 5'5 (I think...it's been a long time since but I remember there was a height minimum requirement), and SAT score requirement. Guess there wasn't a designer egg lab at the time so folks had to place ads out for themselves. Clever to place it in well regarded Univiersity papers!

Bailey - recently finished the book A Fatal Inheritance: How a Family Misfortune Revealed a Deadly Medical.Mustery the author talks about CRISPR and it's ability to modify genes for certain cancers. And, yes, the long term effects of altering someone's DNA are unknown. As someone who is in a complete remission with a rare blood cancer I want research to continue. For many gene therapy is the answer to their cancer treatment. CRISPR being used to design the perfect baby is repulsive.

I used to say that there should be a competency test requirement in order to procreate but that’s pretty eugenicsy isn’t it
@Allisonmarie5674 ай бұрын
Maybe, but it does appear that nowadays idiots are leaving kids in hot cars, on hot boats, etc and that would all be prevented by taking a simple competency test lol😂😂.

Theres an episode of Star Trek: Voyager (s07ep11, Lineage) that deals with technological intervention in fetal development. It always stuck with me as a really interesting exploration of the kinds of emotions that might be attached to a parent wanting to, like, erase part of themself from the fetal development (B'Elanna, the mother, basically doesnt want her Klingon genes making life difficult for her half Klingon/half human child). It's a really striking episode and one of those things that really solidified my love of the Star Trek franchise, in general, and the Voyager show, specifically.

I’m very much for “designer” babies but more for the sense that I have genetic health problems that I don’t want my child to have to go through. Obviously if there’s no health benefits of doing it to improve the child’s quality of life then there’s no reason to do it.

I remember when I watched a new breed of bulldog happen, the Blue Merle. The breed isn'taccepted or recognized by the AKC, yet. It's something I think about often, the designer babies. The clones. The need for a fountain of youth. What happens if you want a refund because your baby's eyes aren't green enough?
@erinkinsella914 ай бұрын
Blue merle is just a colouring not a breed, they've done this plenty of times with bulldogs and lots of other breeds, introducing a colour that wasnt original

The word "Mensa," as used by the international high IQ society, indeed comes from Latin, where it means "table." The society chose this name because it represents a round table where members of all backgrounds can come together as equals, regardless of their other differences. The idea was to symbolize that the organization is a meeting place for intellectuals, a space where ideas can be exchanged openly and freely.
