I thought I knew about make up, but the beauty industry has exploded so much, it's hard to keep up! I'm learning so much from you! In order to avoid the issue with skincare, I put my skincare on as soon as I get up and wait at least an hour before applying sunscreen and then make up 😊

I think there’s a lot of research with the recommended amount of spf and it can become a soupy mess if you do that. You’re coming from a makeup artist perspective but if you actually give the spf a few minutes to sink in you can apply the proper amount and should still be able to have a great base for makeup. Another option is to apply multiple light layers. That tends to work for me.

Thank you so much for commenting on this. Any level of protection is better than nothing but I agree with you it's better to apply the recommended amount (3 finger lengths) and let it dry down. Applying in layers is a great tip. Also, if your super oily, you didn't necessarily need to apply a moisturizer underneath. Your SPF will probably sink in better. This will probably be an unpopular opinion but if you have a really special event that you need your makeup to last all day for, if you're not going to be outside or the UV index is really low, just don't wear it. Even the best Asian sunscreens can break down makeup throughout the day.

The 'no foundation under the eyes' tip was a great pointer for me. I hadn't thought about the foundation formulas, which are not designed to be doing the same tasks as a concealer (or, at least, not as well). I am now going to avoid this slip up, haha, quite literally!

Great tips, Nikki. It's also so important to let skincare productd, especially sunscreen, dry down before applying primer or foundation. I love the d'Alba First Spray Serum. I let it dry, the add my Vitamin C serum. And a lightweight Coq-10 serum. Then onto a moisturizer, used sparingly. A mineral sunscreen, which I let sit for about 20 mins. I have super dry skin, and this works for me. Yes. Smallest amount of primer. I never use a heavy foundation on my mature skin. No pilling, I get a very smooth application. I never take foundation up under my eyes. Fabulous idea with the setting spray. Thank you ever so much!💖💖

Great video Nikki! I definitely use more than 3 products since I use actives in the AM, Vit C, CoQ10, pigment inhibitor, eye cream with Vit K, light moisturizer, sunscreen. Totally agree with using only small amounts and letting dry down-especially sunscreen which I give at least 15 mins. While I love makeup, my skincare is more important.

Nikki, I had to use my pressed powder foundation as I ran out of my setting powder. I had no lines or caked looking mess but it looked very heavy and much more pigmented than I like to see. I haven't bought the Huda one, maybe that would mattify the heck out of my skin once and for all. And i do my skincare prep accordingly and all that,i am on tret also and i moisturize well, but that's just how my skin is. What i need is a gooooood setting spray for oily skin. Can you use too much setting spray? I almost always use 1 layer of spray before any makeup, 1 layer after all my base products and the one layer over my entire finished face… is this too much? Is it a waste? I’ve seen a ton of MUAs use multiple layers of setting spray… but you have never mentioned doing so…. I would love to know your thoughts….❤❤❤

I do a 4-step skincare routine, but I live in AZ. The climate is extremely dry all year round for the most part and my skin drinks every drop of moisture because of the dry air. I do very light layers of each one and then like you said, the heavy hitters for night time. I always have to use a sweat or oil control primer in the summer when it’s 90+, but that’s pretty typical. I used to live in LV, and I never used powder cuz it was so dry! Now, living in the Midwest, it's totally different, so the powder and setting spray is a must! 😅

This is very helpful. I wash my face then milk toner then serum followed by a pore primer then my foundation and sometimes that still feels like too much.

This is great! Thank you for sharing! I definitely see the importance of less is more, especially as I age. One of my biggest concerns is actually blending concealer. It's the strangest thing; underneath my left eye is almost always left with less product, and I can never get the same amount of coverage as my right side. I think it might have to do with how narrow and deep my inner eye/ corners are. Watching you use the brushes you use would cause all sorts of lines, and creases if I attempted to use a brush that large, and a sponge is WAY too big. Now that I am thinking about it, I may try using a small detail eyeshadow brush to see if that helps!

Thank you, was using the Charlotte tilbury as setting powder. I've been getting frustrated. Also using too many different skincare products. I will make the changes. 🤞 it will be better.

For me it also depends on the day. If I’m super dry I use 4 products but give it enough time to soak in. If I’m more oily I use only 3 products.

I learned so much! The undereye information was so helpful. So was the setting spray. So was everything else! Thank-you for sharing invaluable advice and tips for us to use. Love you, Nikki! 💜💜💜

This is so timely for me! I know I use way too many layers of skincare, followed by primer, in my morning routine and wonder why my make-up pills! I feel like I'm losing out on the serum benefits if I leave them out, but if using less in the morning keeps my make-up from pilling, then I'll try it.

I have been watching make up videos for YEARS, yet I didn't know that the CT powder is not for setting the undereye 🙈. Also I have never liked setting sprays, but now I know why.. Can't wait to try these tips❤

I will do my skincare before I go downstairs to pour over my coffee and feed my pets in the morning. That gives me 10-20 minutes for it to dry down before makeup. Lately, I’ve been using Danessa Myericks skin tint which is super emollient with just a bit of Ami Colě powder to set the face and by 3pm, my entire complexion has dried up and is flaking off. I don’t know if it’s the sunscreen combined with the serum, or the serum with the powder, but it’s a total mess on my face that I can’t wait to wash off. I think the issue is with the skin tint, but I don’t know why.

I enjoy all of your videos and thankful you did thus bc I am at the part where your applying the rare beauty tinted moisturizer and I would always use way to much skin prep! Today i am now going to do what you said! I picked up the new futurist skin tint from estee yesterday.

Thank you for putting this out here, I have the same issues but mine is with oily skin and I realized I was putting too much skincare under my makeup especially when my oil starts developing throughout the day, it was just a slick mess

Love your tips, and I’m absolutely into less layers to make it more natural and comfortable. Especially for oily skin. But I just need to reiterate: when it comes to sunscreen, there’s no two ways about it. It *needs* that specific amount to be able to create a film on your skin, without any thinner areas or “wholes” in coverage. That’s how it’s tested, that’s how it works. (It also needs to be reapplied, but I’m not going to nag anyone about that). So I work my routine around that, without losing any skincare benefits. As someone with oily skin, I use a very watery serum that sinks into the skin, brings in plumpness and also has anti-oxidant benefits to improve the sunscreen’s performance. Let it sink in before moving on for a minute or so, Then go in directly with the sunscreen, proper amount, texture chosen according to the skin’s needs (lightweight, not greasy for me). Again, let it sink in for a good while so that it can create its protective film (I usually go get dressed or have breakfast). I personally don’t need moisturiser, sunscreen almost always has some hydration or emollient elements to it. That can save a step that at the end of the day it’s unnecessary for oilier skin types.
