Scott == I'm hopelessly biased, since I contribute here at MWM, but please -- link us to YOUR channel with scores of interviews -- As an amateur interviewer/music writer myself since 1985 -- I'm ALWAYS trying to pick up tips and improve. Sounds like you've got it dialed in for YOUR interviews -- hook a brotha up with some Links. Cheers!

Maybe more interviewers should act like they have no clue how to interview, because he came away with one of the best interviews with a musician I've ever seen.

I love (a lot of) Vai's music and how he always seems positively charged. Amazing guitar player, all around nice guy.. Living legend! But for arguments' sake I'm going to defend the interviewer here in your accusation of the interview being cringy.. Yes Vai is eloquent when he is expressing his thoughts.. but just because it's about his personal observations/perception of things (that he's being asked about and we're obviously interested in) doesn't mean it's always 100% insightful, meaningful or even appropriate. Vai's repeated question "do you know what I mean"? is a case in point; it's both condescending - contrary to Vai's assumption, the interviewer is old/wise enough to let Vai know when he doesn't understand Vai's meanderings e.g. on vibrating energies - and a sign of insecurity to ask for confirmation that many times. Perhaps such a (rhetorical) question was Vai's subconscious way of saying that he's not sure some of his explanation has relevancy or if it makes sense at all even to himself..but can you interviewer back me up on this without me losing face? Either way, I think the interviewer handled that nicely. Being concise and incisive is not something Vai is aiming for when asked (even rather mundane/predictable) questions; in his interviews he will invariably give an elaborate answer with all the nuances he deems necessary to include. That's not a criticism at all; personally I think it's great (!) because it shows his enthusiasm to talk about something he clearly enjoys talking about 😀.. but more cynically you could make an argument that he really likes to get on his hobbyhorse during interviews and hear himself talk. Makes for an easy job as an interviewer I think and perhaps not cringy but at times Vai risks sounding glib.

Totally agree. I never thought he was much more than DLR’s hair guitarist. The first time I started paying attention was when I heard he had transcribed Zappa solos, but it took the internet and KZbin to expose the guy for who he is imo.

Well, you can take at least some of the credit: it's the interviewer's job to make the celebrity/artist feel comfortable enough to answer sincerely and without hiding anything. You can absolutely tell that in this video Steve is just himself. Really, because of how this interview is conducted, I dare say I got more out of it than I would ever get from like a therapy session or whatever. Thanks. :) Happy new year to you too, and to your entire crew!

Make Weird Music Right on, you're a lucky guy to have spent some time with him. I used to take guitar lessons from Dave Weiner about 15-16 yrs ago, when Dave lived in the L.A. area. Been to many of Vai's signing's, shows, etc. He's a great guy from what I know of him. :) By the way, did you know Brian Davis? He worked for Vai, about 12 yrs ago at Favored Nations...was Vai's web tech at that time...

Been a fan of Steve for so many years it's obscene, finally saw him in Paris last year for the Passion and Warfare tour... but as much as I can be in awe musically, I would just love to have a chat with him about spirituality. It's not the first time I hear him brush on the subject, and I think he has done a lot of homework... Fabulous interview, good you went beyond the 10 typical no brainer questions (then again I guess knowing the guy for 20 years helps some ). :)

What a beautiful interview! I always feel that the artist can inspire us beyond their art. You take Steve's attitude towards life, work, music etc and it is something that you can apply to your own life and anything you do. The particular thing about the artist is that you get to see all those things reflected in their art, and that works sort of like fuel or inspiration to embrace that attitude yourself. Congrats on an excellent job!

I'm really pleased to see you allow him a lot of flexibility to talk about a wide-range of topics. I heard many of his interviews, and bits and pieces of his spiritual approach to life come out, but the interviewer isn't interested in this. But if you want to understand some of his songs, you must find out more about him personally. This is an incredibly intelligent man and he has a lot to share beyond guitar playing. Thank you for allowing him to talk more about that. I think it's obvious he wants to talk share it, so thank you for letting him speak.

This is probably the best Steve Vai interview I have seen to date. I usually get the impression that Steve doesn't feel comfortable digging into the personal stuff in interviews but this had a very honest quality to it. Great stuff.

Hey Anthony, wonderful site and interviews!!! This would have been a lifesaver in my world 50 years ago(!). My salvation then were a few "band nerd" guys in high school who were into the "weirdness" of Charles Ives, Stravinsky, Zappa, Persichetti, Cage, Partch, Glass and Nelhybel among others. Thanks much!!!

I'm sorry but I just really really fucking love this interview. It feels so pure and innocent. Music has finally bridge the gap between my existence and the question of why we are here. Life changing and so many times when I hear Steve speak, I get tears because the love he puts into what he does resonates so strongly.

I fully agree, I slightly earlier listened to his interviews and my impression was - not only virtuoso but modest and very intelligent person. I even joked - I don't know I prefere more listening to his music or listening to what he tells about music even life. Very fine interview, resonable questions! I also listened to Polish interview (in English), Steve Vai surprised me - he is also beekeepers! How can he find time for all his activity? Here it is: www.infomusic.pl/video :)

Fantastic interviewer! You asked real questions with a genuine vulnerability and allowed Steve to process and evolve his answers as he was speaking. Great job of listening and thank you for sharing. I can't praise this post enough. Of course, I'm here because of Vai and he's a quality interview, but that goes without saying for anyone else caring to read comments below this video. :-) EDIT: I forgot to mention your annotations were valuable, as well. Thanks agian.
