God-level. Great work. You are seriously brave to do the Kumiko before you do the body contours and neck pocket. One of my kids still has a cutting board that started life as a gorgeous guitar body (not this gorgeous, but good by my standards) for which I slightly screwed up the neck pocket when I did that after I did the other parts. Never again - now I do the neck and pickups and cavity, then the contours, and only then the fancy stuff.

Hey Miles - I am a 65 year old woodworker who has been playing and teaching guitar for more than 40 years as well. I use kumiko in some designs, and I use Japanese tools quite a bit.. This wis a very , very impressive build. I wish you had played the guitar with a pick - that is the only way to really get a sense of the tone, but with what you did as far as cosmetics are concerned, I dont think you are too focused on the sound anyway. The art is the thing in this case, and it is fantastic. I own 30 or so guitars, and I don't have anything that is as interesting as your build. There are two things I worry about with the use of epoxy - the weight, and the resonance. I imagine your guitar is pretty heavy. Regardless, its a great piece of art. I am very impressed, especially for your age and lack of woodworking experience. You knocked it out of the park young man! Way to go. Joe

@@stevenlewis4385 This was a superlative build. Despite building guitars myself, I'd buy this one. The control cavity cover is a sweet extra. I was born July 4th 1963. I started trying to "build stuff" at age 4. I got a rectangular block of wood from My Grandad's basement then a Black-Green permanent marker from Grandma's junk drawer and drew a speedometer, tachometer and the rest of the gauges on the board. I had made a dashboard. I was sure proud of that thing and showed it to everybody. I originally wanted to build antique reproductions of old furniture as a career but it's nearly impossible to get a job doing this unless Your Father & Grandfather does this and You are their Apprentice. I settled on being a house painter/restoration contractor. I did much more than just paint. I did all the repairs and then paint the house. I've worked with my hands all my life but I believe this is the coolest thing I've ever seen. My hat's off to you young man you are true Craftsman. Your Workmanship is impeccable keep going no telling what You'll be able to achieve by the time You're My age - 57-1/2. You remind me so much of myself when I was your age. God Bless You and Your Family!! Jimmy in NC....

Amazing work! One simple change I would recommend would be to widen the neck screw holes in the body just slightly so that the screws only thread into the neck itself and not the body. When the screws thread into the body it causes the body to travel up the thread of the screw away from the neck and creates a small gap. If you widen the holes in the body it shouldn't really change much as far as your setup goes but it should make a pretty substantial improvement in the resonance of the guitar.

Spray max says the pot life for it's 2K Clear Coat is 48 hrs at 68 deg. I recently activated a can and did a small job with plenty left over. The clear coat was still good, and sprayed well 1 week after activating it. It was in my garage where the temp was 65-70 degrees. I actually tested it on a painted can before using it on my car. It dried to touch in about 15 minutes, and fully dried after an hour. So I don't know why the manufacturer says it has a 2 day pot life. I could see it if it was a 2 part version intended to be used with a spray gun, in which case the mix would be exposed to air. So as long as it still sprays- it's good. Don't throw it out after 2 days. Excellent video, and woodworking skills!

Hehe thank you Drew! I appreciate it you saying its cinematic lol. The funny thing is, my computer couldn't play back the 100x footage so I couldn't really gauge how fast it looked until after the export. Can't wait to see your build video ;)

Beautiful job, Miles!! As someone who's built a lot of guitars, this was super impressive. Two questions: One, curious to know how much this weighed, given it was maple + epoxy. Did you weight? Also, how was the action on it? The neck looks like it was set a bit high (just IMO, not a criticism!), so I wonder how high you had to set the bridge saddles. I try to set the necks so that bottom of the fretboard is nearly flush with the body. That all said, I'll probably borrow this idea at some point down the road. :D Well done, dude!!!

Amazing result! I've built one guitar myself (and it was a Tele, so not nearly as much work as a Strat) and I know how much work it can be! Is there a reason to why you didn't place the output jack on the side or on the back of the body?

the whole video i as like: give this man a cnc machine! but then again you wouldnt be doing all this by hand and this is just mindblowing. as a person who did her apprenticeship as carpenter in the swiss mountains where the traditional craft is still somewhat alive i have to admit that not alot of the beardy old mountain dudes who were basically born with a saw and a hammer in their hands not a lot of them would be able to pull of something like this. huge respect!

I built a fully acrylic guitar in 1992. I did all the routing by hand with a dremel style tool and patience. Then I hand polished it all. The only thing I forgot was to not cut 90 degree angles, like at the neck pocket. It broke at that point during a show when I fell hard on the stage after hanging from a bungie chord. (Yep, I was a "energetic" on stage). I repaired it by tapping and bolting and gluing. Still have it.....hanging on the wall with the rest. Cheers!!

Very impressive results. A word on the magnets, you gain no additional holding strength doing a magnet to magnet connection like that than you would a magnet to a steel washer. That said those little magnets are pretty cheap these days, so might not even be worth it to bother with washers or metal discs. Either way, subscribed.
