Maki & Toji Are Not The Same Character...

As I was reading the series I had a thought come to my head. I think Maki should surpass Toji at some point. Not just be his equal, but surpass him. I don’t think a lot of people are gonna be fans of this video essay & to be honest I’m not either. I love Toji, he is one of my favorite characters in the series, but there’s a reason why he’s one of my favorite characters; a small part of this is because he’s a badass and all that, but the major reason, well, it’s not as simple as the first, and it even ties into why I believe Maki should surpass Toji so, why not wrap all of that into a video. I never spoke about Maki on this channel either surprisingly enough. So, I think making this video is a perfect opportunity to tackle both. With that being said, let’s get into it.

Toji is my fav character. And that is because his actions and flaws feel human. This character is written so realistically. He made bad decisions, died with regrets, came back to life, saved maki and his son, died without regrets with a smile.

I believe Toji's role in Jujutsu was to break the fate of others around him, he broke Gojo and Megumi's fates. Gojo would have been limited as hell without rct and wouldn't have purple. While Megumi didnt go back to the Zenin clan. Which imo changed the society of Jujutsu as a whole. Without Toji we would have seen a story where Gojo and Geto would have still been equals and possibly Gojo could have saved Geto because he would have been able to understand him (or they both could have turned evil).

Toji can do everything she does. The video says Maki > Toji because heavenly restriction users cannot fight at full power with their minds clouded and Maki overcame her trauma while Toji did not. This doesn't matter because she always had that mentality yet is still only considered equal when she is fully realized. And she cannot get stronger as shown with her conversation with Mai. And if she could it wouldn't be that much if an amp considereding Mei Mei isn't even top of grade 1 despite training her body to the limit for most of her life while Maki only had a month. And she also had the OP ass bird strike!

I feel like people somehow miss that Toji is an antagonist in JJK. Not a hero or even an anti-hero, he's a villain with the mindset and ethics that the story deems as "bad and wrong." We should see him as a cautionary tale, not someone to aspire to be. Maki is what Toji could never let himself be. People talk about Toji like hes some aspirational hero or mentor they dont want to see surpassed, and not the fragile, damaged, wasted potential of a man that Toji was. We should aspire to overcome our circusmstances like Maki, and not be a perpetual slave to them like Toji. Deep down, i bet Toji wishes he were like Maki.

Maki's character has been dependent on Toji for a very very very long time. Believe it or not there was a time Maki could do things other than being expressionless and having Unga Bunga strength, the prospects of her growth were actually interesting. The chains are now in their mind and bind them there more than the actual physical chains do. Much in the same way, Toji, must've had a strong sense of futility and pointlessness imprinted on him at a young age, because even as he grows older he does not try to break down the society he hates, even though he could. He doesn't try freeing himself, even though he could and thus he died still trapped in his old mentality.

i kind of wish Gege would, similarly, do what Kaneshiro has done with Blue Lock: create a side manga around the main story. BlueLock has "Episode Nagi" about Nagi's upbringing and his POV of the main story. Where Gege could differentiate here would be to do some one-offs about some underdeveloped characters such as Toji. Each one shot would be about a character.

That individuality and acceptance is why I believe Yuji shouldn’t have anything else anyone has. He is himself, Yuji Itadori, partially heavenly restricted, born from Kenjaku and former Vessel of Sukuna. Rather than taking these things and pushing it all against Sukuna almost in a way thats mirroring a Gojo awakening. I feel that Yuji going down his own path with his own cursed technique if any at all will be best. Yuji will no longer harbor any self hatred for himself instead choosing to accept who he is what he is and what can and cant do. Allowing him to use Black Flash at will, and indulge in the cursed realm in a seperate from any others. He will develop a new ability seperate from all else. Seperate from the cursed techniques and heavenly restrictions which bind everyone else to the Jujutsu world. A ability which transcends those limits unique only to him.

Gojo was just for entertainment nothing more according to sukuna. He wanted to bypass infinity to prepare for the merger or he'd have killed him sooner. Tengan created the six eyes for them to protect her. If she fuses to make the merger than all those abilities and more will be in one being.

Not because of bias, but because the author hasn’t stated that she’s surpassed him, along with the fact that heavenly restriction is supposed to be the peak/pinnacle of physical abilities so I don’t think you can change your physical strength after that. This video is a amazing take but I wanted to say my own opinion. Toji was a character who began with ultimate power but had nothing else. His trauma ran much deeper than Maki’s (not to discredit Maki) due to being tied to no one else other than his pressers. The only levity he had ever found was in a woman who he left for. Though she sadly passed. This left a void in Toji that could only bee seen in Maki later on. We also have no idea what terms Megumi’s mother died. So Toji may never have gotten the levity of hearing her dying breath. Then a master of Jujustu who could see through the one thing he held dear, being his power. Cheated death and came to fight him. He prolapsed into his pride before ultimately dying with only one regret. Megumi. This is then rectified by his resurrection. He kills himself selflessly betting on his bum ass of a son. #potential man

It's because every Maki feat is a Toji feat and so Toji fanboys only support Maki because she's a reskin of their "GOAT". As for the thirst... after hearing how a lot of Toji fans talk about him, I think many of them might be gays in denial. Maki surpassed Toji when she wiped out the whole clan. They both had the gift of Heavenly Restriction, but Maki had the mindset Toji didn't reach in truly being free of their family. Toji's mistreatment by the Zenin is what planted the idea in his head to try and defeat Gojo the second time. If Toji had abandoned the fight, that would have been his true liberation from his clan, by not keeping the mindset of Zenin ego.

tbf we are never told she killed children but at the same time we are never told she didn't kill any children but I kind of doubt she would. Also the reason she's "empty" cause she lost her life's purpose. She wanted to change the Zenin clan for Mai but now Mai's dead and Maki has already gotten her revenge so she's got no reason to live now.

There really isn't any concrete confirmation. The only non sorcerer she is shown unaliving is her mom. I think it was probably left like that to be up for some level of interpretation. But considering her friends don't look at her with disgust I think it's safe to assume she didn't kill any children.

Maki always had that mentality yet was still only equal by the end of her fight with curse Naoya. And there isn't any physical training can do to give her a considerably amp especially only for a month if someone like Mei Mei can't get near the top of grade 1 with her immense physical training. She ain't even doing just physical training as well! Her CE solid and shes got the most OP combat binding vow in the verse!

Tbh, it’s better to ask *If* it’s possible for Maki to fully surpass Toji: They have the same heavenly restrictions, the soul-split Katana, and the hyper-regeneration. (Actually, idk if toji had that, but the fact that maki is able to tank Sukuna-slashes, that might be a + in her books.) While Maki can keep getting stronger, and refine her form, *is their actually more she can do?* The point she’s stuck at, is that besides her current abilities, she doesn’t have any other utility outside of her body. She doesn’t have cursed energy, and besides being able to sense air currents, she doesn’t have ways of explosively increasing strength from the point she’s at right now. While we can speculate that she’s able to sense other things, like how her and toji are both able to sense curses, and negate domains, the fact is, that’s redundant to the current battle; Even while she is able to do this, she’s constrained to the power of sukuna, and even with all these other abilities, it doesn’t stop her from being slashed, or take heavy damage from it. She’s already tanked 2 black flashes from the man, and multiple dismantles, and is still standing, a testament to her growth, but a shackle b/c she isn’t able to get strong enough to stop them. Toji was rusty in the past, and maki is young, the idea that Maki can’t surpass the toji we saw during hidden inventory is stupid. The better question would be whether she’s able to overcome the what she is right now; overcome the heavenly restriction and go beyond that, beyond what toji was. Yuta, Yuji, and todo, all had the capabilities to go beyond special grade, *could maki also do that?* Only time will tell. (Or if she survives, but that’s only for Gege to write.)

She can sense air currents, but how is that going to help her against sukuna if the slashes either 1, cut the air, or 2, goes faster then she can dodge? The point of the original comment was to ask; where else can Maki go from the point she’s at? Besides air currents, what else can she sense or do? She was able to dodge cursed Naoya because of this, but what happens if it’s multiple enemies? Multiple attacks? Or if the enemy she’s going against is just stronger? What are the true capabilities of the heavenly restriction? And if this is all maki can be, then she’s going to be blitzed when Yuji or Yuta get their exponential power boosts, or when Gege decides to glaze Sukuna again in 4 more chapters. Soul katana or not, she’s not going to be able to handle people more powerful then gojo, if she herself can’t also grow at that rate, that’s the point of the conversation. And while people might say “freedom.” What does freedom mean when your being constrained by someone stronger than you? Maki doesn’t have that freedom in this fight with sukuna, because he’s constructing it. And she has to rely on him thinking she’s out to keep coming back. I personally like Maki and her development, but if she can’t keep up/keep growing at the rate everyone else is, she’s going to be left behind like everyone else.

I actually really like the route of Maki surpassing Toji not because she trained physically for 1 month during the timeskip. That's because Toji and Maki already represent the peak of what a human body can achieve (with no cursed energy). So it kinda doesn't make sense that just conventional training can push them even further beyond what already is peak human body potential. What actually pushes you beyond even that peak is your mental state. We saw that what made Maki achieve equal power to Toji was her mental state changing to a better form. And that's what upgrades their type of Heavenly Restriction. Freeing yourself mentally as much as you can. In that aspect, Maki can surpass Toji and thereby improve upon her Heavenly Restriction. Right now I still have Toji above Maki in strength mostly because of Toji's tactical mind and his greater array of incredibly powerful cursed tools like his infinite chain, ISH, and his storage curse. But this would be a cool way of having Maki surpass Toji despite Toji's advantage in his cursed tools.

Putting the restriction on Maki and Toji that there at they're max stats that they can ever achieve makes no sense to me. For one it would make them completely irrelevant in the scheme of things later down the line. It also makes no sense to me that Maki would be at her physical peak she could ever be at. She's 16, she would still have a few years before she fully matures physically.

I agree with the video, but I think gojo coming back isn't complete copium. The story has a lot of symbolism with Buddhism in it, and the fact that there are seven lotus flowers in the airport and several other signs and themes in the story. I think gojo will come back, but I don't think he will be the one to finish the fight because of those same themes.

Ngl, while you said that people might not be fans of what you have to say, I agree wholeheartedly. A lot of maki’s story has to do with surpassing expectations, misogyny and the like to begin with, and with her being compared to Toji by the mangaka and fans alike, I do think it makes sense for her to surpass him. I want to point out what I think makes Toji and Maki different is very much their circumstances around birth: Maki being a twin, and born as a girl while Toji is not. Because like it or not, the Zenin clan is shown to be very gross towards women, and especially down play and abuse maki and Mai for being “worthless” for Maki having no cursed techniques, while Mai has a weak one. I think Maki’s story in it of itself shows the story of how someone fought to get out of their abuse, and to kick ass on the way.

Contrary to what people think, I think Gege writes female characters pretty well. Aside from Maki, the other girls either end up unalived or being useless. But the one who's unalived is part of the tragedy within JJK so it makes sense and the ones who becomes useless is not even important to the story. Aside from Maki, I think Nobara, Yorozu, Shoko, and Mei Mei are used well in the story.

i think Toji accepted all the shit he got, simply because he just straight up didn't give a fuck or put any weight in it. At least initially. I don't think that makes him weaker in mind or anything. It was only later on in his life that he started caring and started regretting a lot of things.
