Really good video! And I agree: Fujimoto is an absolute genius. Also an absolute weirdo but a genius weirdo nonetheless. What I also found very interesting is how Makima is kind of the reverse of Power. Power started out as seeing herself above all humans and their conventions and rules (and when she goes full devil towards the end, there's a brief glimpse of her superiority) complex again). She's Anti-Control in a sense. But over the course of the story she grows to love humans (especially Denji and Aki) and wants to "be more human" in a sense for their sake. My favorite encapsulation of that is an official artwork of her brushing her teeth. Doing that is probably as civilized of a behavior as one can get. Lots of children have to basically be forced to do it, because it's not fun and there's no immediate reward. And Power ... she holds the brush completely wrong, which makes it look very awkward. And her non-human traits are on full display: Horns, weird eyes and in that case especially her shark teeth. But she really tries. She wants to be more human and enjoy her life with them. The squabbling and fighting as much as the good food and heartfelt kindness. What started with allowing herself the weakness of caring for a cat she originally wanted to eat, ends with her sacrificing herself for the sake her best friend and all of humanity, with her only wish to find such kindness again in her next life. Makima strived for perfection and unrestricted control, while Power learned that the happiest she could be was when she allowed herself life to be touched (and thus in a small way to be controlled) by others that care for her as much as she cares for them, despite the flaws.

@3:38 Spoilers for some of the latest chapters of part 2: But I think considering where we're at in part 2 right now, we can see pretty darn clearly why Makima found the higher up bigwigs, politicians and heads of Public Safety unnerving, they're absolutely despicable, deplorable and repugnantly selfish, as detestable as her own methods was, she was the stop-gap, the floodgate that kept more disgustingly evil devils from exploiting and making contracts with positions of power in human society, devils say like... The Aging-Devil, who has filled the vacuum left by Makima in Public Safety and is now using it's amicable position with the humans in power, offering itself up to be consumed and erased by Chainsaw-Man in exchange for getting to watch and self-pleasure at the mutilation of 20,000 children in front of mirrors, that's 20,000 for each bite btw, sick freaks talking to Pochita about it like it's some romantic dinner date... And Makima was the one holding back all of that, it's why part 2 is such a cluster right now.

The removal of war or famine would be pretty objectively good for humanity, I’d say. But Makima’s plan wouldn’t have worked anyway, since Pochita’s erasure power isn’t that clear cut, given how the ear devil erasure didn’t erase everything ear-related.

One Chinese ruler once decided to finally put a stop to the dreadful reign of those horrible pests, sparrows. (I forgot the specific species and other details of this story, but bear with me) They steal their crops, perpetuating famine, and are generally annoying, so he wondered why getting rid of them had never come to anyone's mind. A grand and noble campaign had been launched, those birds were exterminated as if they would personally be responsible for the Holocaust later on. And the campaign was successful, that species was nearly reduced to nothing. The country was then hit with the worst famine in history because of bug numbers increasing astronomically with the absence of birds that had previously been eating them. Whooptie-doo.

In her view it's simple: she keeps erasing things until everything she disapproves of is gone. She is, by necessity of her nature, the most extreme control freak in existance. She embodies the concept of letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. There is no true scotsman. She would erase each and every single perceived flaw, until, eventually there was nothing left except herself and the chainsaw devil, and then she'd feed herself to it because she couldn't live up to her own standards. Interestingly, though, is her view of chainsaw. She's all about control, and sees it, who she understands yo be chaos, as pretty close to perfection. Honestly... I think being eaten was her goal all along, on some level. At least, being eaten by chainsaw. With her desire for control, she should hate chaos. Now, I dispute that he is chaos, but that's how she sees him. Despite her upbringing and the demonic impulses, she embraces a yhe one thing that can ultimately end Control itself. A dragon doesn't hang the dragon-slaying sword on it's wall unless it wants a hero to come along and end it. She only knows one way to live, but actually wants otherwise, and thus clings to the thing that can give her what she really wants...
@drobinson1010 күн бұрын
Hey I agree she would not have done good, but I might be wrong, but it looked like to me he didn't just erase the ear, he erased the need for ears. What I mean is that when the ears were erased, it the rules of reality changed to where ears were not nesacery for human existence, though the elephant smiling might mean otherwise metaphorically but I don't really ever want to say I know anything about chainsawman because this manga has completely threw me for a loop and made me look like a fool more than anything I ever experienced in manga. But my theory at the moment is pochetia, sorry if I misspell our good boys name, might be able to do what we thought would be a negative and actually change everything to still work fine without famine or war, because I personally think he is Truely what all devils fear, and if fujimoto keeps the"it not that deep" approach then what could be more simple than if you reverse the word dog. Then you have something that actually Truely decides what's good and evil. Sorry for the long message, it's cool to see that someone got a different thought of what exactly happened when the ear devil was eaten. Have a good day.

this video is so beautiful. it made my love for chainsaw man as a literature piece reblossom. the script and sentences that construct it are logical. theyre not too short and not too long either. it gave me a new way and interpretation of makima. the voice is soothing and calming. the editing is breathtaking - the clips, how they match with manga panels. I watched the carefully picked effects the overlays disappeared or appeared. I noticed how you censor some panels, in a way it seems intended ( most obvious example is the panel of denji slicing makima, cut in a triangle ). also the last section being more lighthearted is a nice touch. fujimoto is truly weird. I find Makima a sad figure too because noone could & noone wanted to understand her while she was living. Denji at first objectifies Makima for his own needs and then later saw her as this idealized figure rather than a person. Both of these aspects Makima then manipulates. It's not talked about enough how Denji's grooming started way before makima. It started with his father and then from the moment he got access to porn - media that encourages boys to objectify women and see sex as something they can "get" from women. Makima uses this objectification by Denji that exists solely for his own needs to her own benefit. I love how Fujimoto talked about this as they both being unable to create an equal relationship. Denji did not do anything to make makima like him. Makima could never understand the way to genuine human connection. She cries at the scene of a mother hugging her son. She has a special resentment for Denji killing his father. I really interpret that as she herself wanting a family. An all encapsulating hug but not understanding what shade and how to. Ch 1 ends with Makima hugging Denji and that's the happiest she has looked in the entirety of the story.

@@johnnygoody8239 You're right, but I was talking about something slightly different. Makima can control anyone she sees as beneath her and she sees pretty much everyone as beneath her... except for the members of the government. She's intimidated by them, probably because she was raised to be that way. I believe what she has with them is the "child/worker tries desperately to please the parent/boss that doesn't care about them" dynamic, which is kinda the same as what Denji has with her. @@catharsis.catharsisBtw, there's the theory that Makima was raised by the government, but that can't be possible after looking at the details, especially when it isn't her origin story and wasn't stated in the manga. For instance, in chapter 97, Kishibe told Denji that the government would turn Nayuta into something /similar/ to makima, and not that the government raised Makima. Makima has existed for a long time, long enough to witness and participate in the battle against Chainsaw Man in hell, where all the 4 horsemen fought up against Pochita. (After the battle, the Four horsemen came to Earth in search of him). As stated in chapter 84, she's also personally witnessed Pochita erase mindbending concepts along time ago, such as "Four possible conclusions other than death", "A sun that broke children's minds", "The sixth sense all humans used to have", etc. But, yes, even though she wasn't raised by the government, what I said doesn't take away from what others pointed out. She's still willingly partnered up with the Tokyo/Kyoto bigwigs as stated in chapter 22 and is somewhat intimidated by em (but don't let this distract you from the fact that she's still using them to her advantage as well). She's basically an asset to the government officials’ jurisdiction due to them sharing abit of the same goals as her (but that was no longer the case after she succeeded in conquering the whole planet in a short time, while keeping everyone under surveillance by jsing her control lowerlife form - including Powers cat. Anyways, every government accepted their fates, according to the American President. This would especially be true if she had subdued Pochita and controlled all of reality itself, including Primals, which she was seconds away from achieving before Denji happened). Also, you have a point in bringing up Nature vs nurture when comparing Makima to Nayuta. Didn't think of it

In the dialogue between "denji" and makima where she claims that chainsaw man doesnt talk or wear clothes, she is actually talking to pochita right now. that is probably the biggest aspect of her ignorance. she thinks she understands pochita better than anyone else but is proven wrong in every of her views about them without even realising it. when i say she was talking to pochita i mean that when makima relaxes after killing pochita, denji gets up from the crowd and attacks her. at another he even explains that he learned the whole moving without a heart thing from when pochita was fighting makima. its the reading comprehension devil and nobody is safe from it. I do wonder if her so-called reasons for "helping" humanity were just a excuse, as she ranting about hating Denji, being envious of him and calling it worthwhile to ruin the life of a teenager whose only real sins are to love a manipulative monster like herself and defending himself from his father, makes me wonder if this was WAAY more personal than what she told Kishibe. If the world had to be "better" by making a somewhat innocent person suffer into becoming mentally catatonic, i wouldn't see it as worth it. Just justifying the purest, most raw sadistic evil possible. It hurts my heart that she was doing all of this to someone who looked up to her, all disguised under "saving the planet."

6:19 I remember how these panels nearly knocked me out of my chair, such an insane "Oh fuck." moment. It isn't the first indication of how existentially fucked this world is, but it is one of the strongest.

Finally someone who doesn't glaze this fraud this absolute fodder losing to the same person you saw as basically worthless is crazy work gang just shows that this "mastermind" isn't as smart as she thinks she is she tends overlook things😂
@BlurryRaps-t5t15 күн бұрын
Okay, she is smart, but she is inaccurate, that’s the difference, also ur acting like denji outsmarting her is a degrade, if u realise, denji himself isn’t really dum, you’d notice that he didn’t have the life of a normal human being, that’s why he just lacks academic intellect, as far as he’s gornw, he became more smarter, even in the recent chapters, bro figured out a plan, that even asa/yoru couldn’t pull off

Everything in this video is perfect right down to the music playing in the background do you know who made the music?
@catharsis.catharsis16 күн бұрын
All music credits are in the description! Most are modern performances of old classical piano pieces by Chopin

The fact that her goal is good but the actions she takes to get there are doubtful makes her a good villain. Because the audience can relate.

Thats a very good video and a nice way to understand Makimas thinking. Honestly I thought she was not even human, just a devil wanting to achieve its own version of peace, like many villains from Naruto. But actually understanding why and how was left unanswered to me. Maybe I just didn't get it. That Fujimoto made this manga is crazy to me. I don't hate this guy or anything but if you hear what this guy is doing irl I would never think about him being someone who can write genius stroies but he can! Thanks for the video, everything is nicely explained and worded

This is a great video, how does this only have 1000 views? Side note, I feel like I watched a video with a similar title to this. Except it was about Bill Cipher instead of Makima.

Chainsaw Man is a silly story: Denji comes into the story as a dog, he's called a dog, and his heart is a dog. Then, he falls in love with a dog owner. Later, he saves a cat and befriends its owner. Going along, he learns that he's actually a human as he meets a lot of people and obstacles that taught him what it means to be a human until he becomes one. As he's no longer a dog, he betrays his owner despite even his love for her. Chainsaw Man is about being human

I'll be so honest, the whole 'eating makima is my form of love' had me turning for days trying to pick apart the thematics of it, now I realize this is just a fantastic little bit of the author's life slipping in, god bless you Fujimoto

It's still VERY thematically enriching since it parallels several other themes and characters. 2 things can be true at the same time ;) Edit: Apart from what was mentioned in the video, one example i can give is: Makima wanted to also be erased by Pochita (via consumption), but Denji was the one who granted her that wish.

The only fatal flaw that she has that can lead to me automatically beating Makima in a fight is the fact that she’s not real, so that means I win. 🏆 Also you said One Piece 14:21
