It’s one of those things where you don’t really get paid what the value is, you simply get paid whatever the congregation can afford, which very often isn’t very much. It's sad that the church believe they can do that. The church shouldn't be allowed to pay people pennies when they literally get tax breaks. As long as the church buys and sits on undeveloped land or run down houses they don't have to pay taxes. Ministry work is appears to be worthless. You'll be giving them all your time and wasting what money you have for nothing. Honestly, you can do the same amount of good in your community without it. Some people will get mad at me but I don't care about that. I work with someone who does ministry. The church takes advantage of him and he takes advantage of others. I was born and raised Baptist but don't go to any churches. I feel disgusted listening to and watching him take advantage of someone else's kind nature. He gloats about being able to buy cars etc, but calls in every week saying his car broke down. However, his car is working fine on Fri-Sun. He claimed to have had a radiator leak but there was no fluid on the ground. He drove someone else's car around for 2 hours with a flat tire. Pretended he didn't know (the car is a 2015-2020 with TPMS). People like him irk my nerves because they're scummy.
@themagicbread94
@themagicbread94 Жыл бұрын
@@AelleIti do you feel better now that you got that off your chest? That is absolutely not a reflection of all people in ministry. Like someone else said, ministry is not for everyone and keep in mind it is his choice to work there. Yeah, the pay sounds quite low but nobody has a gun to his head. It is pretty clear he has other reasons for working that are not monetary.

I used to caddy for wealthy people, and one time I caddied for a teacher turned investment banker who was worth millions. I remember him telling me on our loop “would you rather build a single house with your hands, or fund the construction of 100 houses?” I think what Caleb said at the end is somewhat parroting what he told me, which is that you can have a direct individual impact like this guy working at the camp, but by dedicating to something else that’s more fruitful you can have a much larger indirect impact through funding and giving back. Some people will disagree, that’s fine, but I side with this mindset as well.

From the title, this wasn't the episode I expected to finally relate to! I have the same values/goals as Colton whereas I couldn't care less about money and just want to make enough to live comfortably and do things I actually care about! He's lucky his job is something he cares and has passion for (I can't say the same) and I can see why he might not want to leave it! I also relate because I too work at a camp (although a totally different type) where all my expenses are paid which allows me to only spend 30% of my total income! He really isn't bad off once the debt is paid but I hope he can find a better work/life balance because 80 hours a week will catch up to you if you're doing it year round! Good luck Colton! 🙂 ETA I predict Colton will have the best update of them all!

Stopped at 20 min in - to comment - I think it might be possible that he says to himself, "Well, I don't actually have to pay for my food at the camp so I can afford to pay for this and this." And the truth is, he probably can - after he's out of debt. Thanks, Caleb, for catching yourself. This guy at least doesn't reek of dysfunctional! And to the guy - thanks for your service! (My husband and I are in ministry - so I feel for you about the pay - my sis worked at a Christian school and made some tiny amount per year - we know people who work at various camps - there isn't a lot of money to be careless with.) Caleb - my husband and I worked at a Christian children's home as house parents and had only about $125/week in pay - in cash since housing and food were provided - years ago now - where state Children's homes paid 10x that.
