Fantastic show of craftsmanship. Being a wood sculpture myself, I can appreciate the time and skill that went into this sculpture. I cut out lettering with an electric scroll saw. You can get blades for it that cuts metal. The blades are like a thread and leaves a finish that needs very little sanding or filing. A man of your obvious skills could master it withing a few hours of practice. I wish you the best in your career and hope your u tube channel thrives. I'm sure it will. And yes I have subscribed and liked. I look forward to any future videos you upload. well done.

Very interesting info on the scroll saw. I have little experience or knowledge of metalworking or available tools to be honest, just teaching myself as I go along. I guess I have a good feel with my hands for tools and been spannering my own cars for years but always useful to get a heads up, thanks! Its funny ... it was over a year before i discovered carbide burrs! Oh the joy of that little revelation! Thanks again for the nice comment, really appreciate that!

Cheers Matt ... errrmm ... yeah I guess it is very much that ... or passion perhaps, certainly something that's related to that part of me. Also (for me anyway) its about a clearly visualized idea or end goal. Not so much every little piece but (for example) the shape of a metal gravy boat might look like the belly of a dove and once that's in my mind everything flows from that point ... or perhaps I need a wormhole for a TARDIS and I hypothesis that a chain might be curved to form that spiralling effect, or in this case a clear visualization of final form and confidence in a basic method that 'rods and weld' could be sculpted to organic shapes. A combination or recognition, innovation, patience, passion / love ... kinda thing! Thanks for the nice comment.

Outstanding!!! When I saw the reveal on Kris's channel I thought for sure that lettering had to be done on a CNC table, I can't believe you did that with a die grinder and hand files! This is a prime example of what an artist can do with minimal tooling! I love how much Kris loves it
@JohnNorrisMetalSculpture
@JohnNorrisMetalSculpture 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers Nick, yeah i mean it was a consideration to get it CNC'd but then it wouldn't be me that had done it and it wouldn't be hand made. That having been said, if someone orders 4 of them tommorrow I might just be visiting an engineering shop for a quote! ;) It took a while to do but even the relatively mundane detail of lettering was rewarding when competed.

Hi guys, I want to start this as a hobby. Is the Mig welder the best way to go? Thanks in advance Vin
@JohnNorrisMetalSculpture
@JohnNorrisMetalSculpture 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Vin. Ok not a short answer i'm afraid but one that I hope will give you some useful insight .... For the sake of argument there are 3 types of welder, Stick, MIG and TIG. If you want to make sculptures of the sort of scale and dimension that I do then Stick is out, it's just too messy. They produce a lot of splatter and really you just can't weld with any real degree of finesse on small pieces. So, that leaves MIG and TIG. MIG (metal inert gas) & TIG (Tungsten inert gas). The principal of both is that an inert shielding gas (like argon or co2) is piped through your hand held 'gun / wand'. This gas surrounds the weld and prevents normal air from being involved in the welding process. Without this gas, oxygen from the air is able to combust and permeate through the weld giving an effect a bit like swiss cheese, lots of 'holes' in the weld and not much strength. It looks shit! A lot of people sell 'MIG welders' which do not use an external gas supply. Instead they use what is called 'flux core wire'. This works by using a wire with a coating that produces its own shielding gas as the weld is in progress. It's quite a blunt tool, agricultural really. Yes you can weld with it but it's not really proper MIG welding and the results are not nearly as tidy with (generally speaking) a lot of weld splatter. You can buy products (anti splatter spray) that you spray on the surface before you weld but its never going to give the same results as an authentic MIG. So, what you need is a GAS MIG as opposed to a non gas MIG. (not really such thing as a non gas MIG its kinda false advertising). As such you will need an external gas bottle / regulator. What material you weld depends on what gas you would use. I'm not really an expert on this but I weld cutlery (stainless steel) a lot and experts have advised me to use a 95% / 5% mix of argon to co2. I can tell you this works brilliantly, I also use it on mild steel although probably you could get away with just 'pub gas' ie CO2 for mild steel. (Pub gas as in the gas they use to pressurise beer barrels to make it flow to the pump.) CO2 is alot cheaper but limited in its applications. I've not used it but I suspect welding stainless with just co2 would give the same weak / porous results. I'll talk you through my set up in a second but before I do there is another alternative which is TIG welding. This is significantly more expensive in terms of the welder itself and alot more fiddly in that you need to hold a welding rod as well as the gun in order to add the material for the weld itself. (You need 3 hands or a lot of clamps!) Having said that, it is also a lot more versatile. For example, without filler rods you can actually melt two surfaces together just by using the TIG gun. Consequently (with practise) it can be much neater and eliminate the need for removal of excess material. I don't have a TIG and only ever dabbled with a mates once or twice. In an ideal world I would have both but its hard to justify the expense as a hobbyist. One day I will get one. OK ... so my advice to you is this ... Go for an authentic MIG welder with external gas supply. My welder was quite literally the cheapest Gas MIG welder on the internet 2 years ago ... a 'WOLFMIG 140x'. It can do non gas welding using flux core wire (by reversing the polarity / swapping over two connections inside the welder) or it can do gas, which i use 100% of the time. There are clearly better welders out there but I hope that I have demonstrated that it is a very capable machine with a bit of practise. I mean .. I am literally a guy that watched 2 or 3 youtube vids and went from there, no training at all. Anyone with a little bit of hand / eye coordination and some skill with their hands can do this. You'll also need an external bottle with a regulator. In the UK where I am you can easily rent a bottle (one off deposit of about £85 / 100$). That's an empty bottle! filling it costs about £65 but lasts me a few months unless I'm really welding a lot. You will also need to buy a regulator for the bottle to control the gas flow. That's about £40. Note: My bottle is 25 litres. The bigger you get the more cost effective. You can buy tiny little bottles to start but they work out about 8 times the price in the long run!! When the gas runs out you just take the bottle back and they exchange for another one. On top of that there are a few tools that will help you to sculpt / finish the metal. I would highly recommend that you get an air compressor. Mine is a cheap 25 litre one. It does the job although it does outrun the air tools a bit so probably 50 litre would be better if you can manage it. The compressor can accept so many different types of tool from tyre inflators to die grinders and those are great things. Ebay / amazon will find you cheap die grinders for about £10 / £15. These are a bit like air driven dremels with significantly more punch. In to these die grinders you can attach all manner of tools. I recommend you get yourself some 'carbide burrs'. They are superb for removing excess material but do produce razor like splinters which get everywhere and easily find their way into your hands, arms, legs .. you name it! Get some good PPE or you'll spend hours with a pin removing them! (it's soon get irritating when every time you pick something up a metal splinter gives you some pain!) I would also recommend that you get two angle grinders. Small ones are better in my opinion (unless you're welding large scale stuff) because they are much easier to wield and you can be surprisingly precise with them with some practise. I use two tools generally in the angle grinders. Cutting discs and 'flap discs'. Flap discs (blue ones) are encrusted with zirconium, they last quite a while and go through anything. You can also buy both on a smaller scale that fit in the die grinders using a quick lock mechanism that allows you to change between in seconds. Also, the die grinders have a larger collet than a dremel and I find that as a result they are much better. I used to destroy the brass collets in the dremels all the time (1/8" collets as opposed to 1/4" in the die grinder. Its just a beefier bit of kit. Having said all of this ... .. when i started (the Predator sculpture for example) I think i had only one angle grinder, 1 dremel, no carbide burrs and no compressor. You can do a lot with just that, its just a ball ache to keep having to change from cutting discs to flap discs etc. The carbide burrs were a real revelation, a brilliant little tool set! Errmm ... I think that's about it. Here's a list of a few of the tools I mentioned above with some links. Note: a professional would spend a lot more on tools. I literally buy the cheapest stuff I can find but it shows what is possible. Final bit of advice is this ... make sure your welder does GAS, its just so much neater than gasless and easier to use. And budget about £400 to get yourself going. Note: you will need some sort of metal plate to weld on so that you can put the welding clamp on it, otherwise you have to clamp to the workpiece itself and that can be irritating on tiny little bits like cutlery kingfishers. Hope this helped, probably I should do a video on this, if that would help then let me know and i'll do one. Regards John P.S. Don't be afraid to speak to your local welding shop for advice. If you are in the UK then look no further than SPA welding in Lancing. A brilliant shop with brilliant customer service! Also, check out 'Barbie the welder' on youtube. She's recently done a series of vids on tools and she knows her stuff! A good resource!

Hi Karen. Thanks for the nice comments and question. The answer is yes I would consider all commissions as long as I have some shared passion for the concept / idea and can formulate a clear vision in my head of how the final piece might look.
