Grant and I put together an old fashioned device that uses heavy mercury to display the air pressure.

Grant and I have very different personalities, for instance In editing I boosted my volume by 6 decibels (doubled) and he still is very loud compared to me, But thats not necessarily a bad thing. Together we can think of things neither of us alone can, which is why we occasionally collaborate.

I actually prefer your editing cause you see more of the thought process and work behind what you are doing. If you get more into editing I hope you can find a way to keep that same feel to your channel. Obviously his style works for his channel but it would be interesting to see Grant do a "less edited" version on a tkor2 channel or something.

Hey Cody can I ask what you think of the metric system and the United States' choice not to adopt it? If it were your choice, would you standardise the imperial system across the world, the metric system across the states or leave things be?

Actually, I find the way how Grant is behaving in this video much more fun to watch... he’s not acting strange as he would normally do by exaggerating all his reactions... but I’m the type of guy who’s probably more ‘mature’ (kids/young people might enjoy Grant more by how he normally behaves?). I’m fine with the collaboration as long as it fits Cody’s content and way of representing his channel, because, you know, I’m here to watch a video with Cody’s ‘characteristic’ if you can call it that way, not Grant’s. So good work! 🤗

the-real-pepe the issue is Grant’s videos used to be more natural and less overproduced. I think a lot of the hate is because we remember the old KoR and dislike his newer format. That being said, if his collaborations with Cody are more like this then I’m happy. He made his choice to change his channel (for the worse in many people’s opinion) but it’s his and if we don’t like it we don’t watch it.

I think another part of the problem is that grant claims to be doing science/ a scienist when in reality hes an engineer and its annoying sometimes when he acts like his is doing 'science experiments' when in reality hes blowing stuff up I wouldent have a problem if he just said he was having fun but he seems like hes pretending to be educational while just being a person makeing stuff on the internet even if i wanted to i couldent learn from him because i dont trust hes accurate

But he didn't lie. It's called eye catching and has been done in showbiz forever. Here's the idea behind an eye catching title "Wait he's sucking mercury through a straw? Why?" *clicks on the video and sees it's a barometer* "Oooh so they're making a barometer and were messing around. I get it" As for cody, he doesn't make thumbnails or eye catching titles because he doesn't care about views. You people forget that grant needs money from this just as much as he likes making videos. I looked at his channel and for the past month every video was INTERESTING. It made me want to watch his video and see what it was really about. Cody on the other hand? I looove his content. But if it ever comes out during the day I just tell myself "eh, I'll watch it later when I'm bored and can't sleep". Grants style: tries to engage audience and gets unneeded hate Cody's style: raw and little editing. Has fanboy's that attack his friends personally because the internet

it is AMAZING to see the difference of editing style between cody and grant. cody is just so simple and trusts his subscribes to think and learn, while grant just pushes editing tricks to dumb-out his and try to make his "simpled" science a wow factor while cody's complex science doesn't need to have a wow factor as he relies on the intelligence of his own followers to both have their own mind and learn with him and by themselves

Kudos for tackling this. I did it a long time ago (still works!) and it's a very gratifying instrument to make. There are few major errors you made that result with problems with this barometer, though: 1) That aluminium base is going to rust away. No doubt about that. Never ever use aluminium to secure anything around mercury. They do leak vapors (don't keep them indoors) and sooner or later that thing will fall off. Use a wooden base secured with iron nails and PVA glue. 2) Use a millimetre paper. As you can see, daily oscillations of atmospheric pressure are tiny. For mercury barometers, mmHg is the best unit. It's metric, translates easily to pascals, and it's dense. 3) That's not how barometer tubes are filled. That little bubble of air at the top is not a small error. Pressure above mercury should be mercury vapor pressure at given temperature. You have a significant air bubble (tube is narrow). This barometer will give off wrong readings. Instead of vacuuming it, let the liquid do its thing. Seal the tube into spherical shape, anneal it with sooty flame (your seal has a great chance of snapping from thermal shock). Secure the tube against a wooden plank and slowly fill it with mercury. Few drops, agitation, tapping on the glass. That completely fills the tube and you can see if there are any trapped air bubbles. Care must be taken not to subject the tube with lots of liquid to acceleration because liquid hammer effect will occur and it will smash the sealed end. After you fill it, hold the opening with a finger, tilt the tube slightly (liquid won't pour out - atmosphere is holding it) and slide it into a bottle of mercury. Then lift it upright, slowly, while tapping the sealed top. Liquid will pour out, leaving a nearly perfect vacuum at the top, vacuum you can't get with even reasonably priced pumps. It's an art and it takes considerable work. It can be downright hazardous because glass snaps and mercury shoots out so make sure the bottle can hold all of the mercury from the tube. Good thinking with the balloon. It shows you understand how this works. What you now have is a baroscope. To make it a barometer, you need proper vacuum inside and calibration.

LOL this brings back memories. My dad built a barometer like this with me when I was a kid. He also designed our house to hold an entire theater pipe organ, and he assembled it in the living room and played it all the time. Our living room had a balcony opening to a large echo chamber for the pipes. Then he scrapped the analog relays and digitized the connection between console and pipes using eproms and machine language. This was in the early to mid eighties. By profession he was a psychiatrist, but he consulted constantly with electrical engineers. He was also an expert translator of ancient Greek. ;p

Richard Smith: between ages 3 and 6, my dad beat me, mentally tormented me, terrorized me, used me as a guinea pig for nazi-esque parenting experiments. At 16 he medicated me with Lithium and 7 antidepressants when I started driving 130mph in neighborhoods, blowing things up, and threatening to burn down his pipe-organ house. The meds were worthless for me. 6 years of psychotherapy is what I needed. Now all I feel is gratefulness for the good stuff, including the fact that he later begged my forgiveness, and also led me to Christ.

This is actually what raw footage from high end video cameras look like straight out of the camera. It is meant to be colour graded in post. They probably used Grant's camera, which most likely does record RAW format video. Cody uses a middle end DLSR or something in that range for his videos, those cameras do all the processing in-camera. I'm guessing Cody hasn't discovered the grading tool in his editing program yet (if it has one...)! :) I hope this is the case at least! :P

Grant used to make really good videos, but they got as you said over time as he grew in popularity. I think this video shows through a bit of the old Grant. He's not the massive dickhead as everyone seems to make him out, he just had to change his channel to still make money at the end of the day.

Fake pristineness to hide his faults with fake enthusiasm for his projects with a fake attitude of authority that he knows what he is doing. Grant hides behind a fake persona, clinically scrubbed to maximize his image to deal with all his subs, while Cody is just himself, love it or hate it. However, this is absolutely par for the course for youtubers, and I am not even hating on Grant saying these things. It is just the blunt reality.

But I understand you do what you gotta do to support your family so I continue to be subscribed to his channel waiting for the occasional gem.

How is Grant's thumbnail and title clickbait? It literally shows and describes what the video is about. Apparently people have confused clickbait with 'eye-catching'
@strandedpb8133

JamEngulfer Sure, it doesn't specifically say he is ingesting mercury, but by the thumbnail where he is sucking it up a straw it is obvious to me what the intended effect is. This is because to the average person, they would have no idea why sucking mercury would be a science experiment and therefore be naturally drawn to the conclusion that the straw is used to drink like it normally is in everyday life.

Dogman690 If you had actually read my comments instead of rushing in to insult me as much as possible you would know that what I'm saying is not that I thought it was okay to drink mercury. But rather that the average person who doesn't know much about science might believe they were in fact drinking mercury. Also, it's not a barometer video, there are two separate videos, one about a barometer and one about sucking mercury through a straw.

That's probably some of it, the other thing I find is the continuous "so update guys" that Grant does, it really brakes the flow of the video (although to be fair that's him trying to reach the 10 minute mark so its also due to youtube itself).

I think Grant and Cody are serving different audiences. Like many of Cody's fans, I really like his calm personality and his humble videos without all the "look at me, i'm the king!! click here!!" kind of thing going on. Grant calls himself literally the "king of random" and he seems to be more of an extrovert entertainer type. Nothing wrong there, I occasionally watch his videos, but for me, it's a bit too much. I mean, just look at the t-shirts they wear during this video! Could the difference be any more obvious? Nevertheless, I like to see both together and hope for future collaborations.

IceDragon978 not everyone obviously prioritizes profits above all else. For example Cody is educational even if it means he makes less money by appealing to a narrower demographic. Profit does not only encompass gaining money. If you make money, yes, you're profiting. But also if you enjoy what you're doing, you're profiting. If it makes you healthier, you're profiting. If it makes you smarter, you're profiting. If you're safer for doing it, you're profiting. We all seek profit, as in we try to get more of what we want and/or need and less of what we don't want and/or don't need.

Some of us are just bitter, some of us are disappointed. For me, Grant's channel was one of my favorites years ago when he was smaller and focused on more complicated and unique projects. I completely understand why his style changed, I mean if you are focusing on your channel as a career/primary income, then you have to follow the money when it comes to content and subscribers. Those of us who are disappointed miss his old style and those of us who are bitter feel he 'sold out'. Personally, I am just disappointed, not in Grant or the direction he took things (I am glad things are going well for him), just by the lack of what I consider to be quality content and how much I miss his old videos.

Honestly, the hate for grant is really uncalled for. I enjoyed this video/collab a quite a bit. Fundamentally, Grant and Cody have two different styles and audience. There's no reason to hate on/shit on Grant just because you don't like his style as opposed to Cody's, or whoever else's. I took some time to go through some of his recent videos as well, and compared it to his old ones. His titles aren't actually "clickbait". In fact, they're literally what's in the video. The only thing is that he's more excited/hyped in some of his videos, but he really isn't in most of them. tl;dr: The hate on Grant makes no sense for the most part.
