How has this held up? With the end grain to face grain glue up, I can foresee problems with the wood expanding and contracting in different directions. That being said, I just built one like this and am con about durability. Most basketweave boards are endgrain, which will be my next one.

@@CalebsFineWoodworking I don't know of mineral oil that isn't food safe. It's sold as a laxative, so it darn well better be. 😀

Not all mineral oil is food grade. There are some kinds designed to be used as a lubricant for metal, these aren't food safe. Most mineral oil may be food safe, but it's always better to double check. Have fun on that board!

Why didn't you do multiple glue-ups, instead of one at a time? Also, is there an advantage to using the sled versus using a chop saw?
@CalebsFineWoodworking3 жыл бұрын
I do just one glue because even though it's a lot to do, it makes it easier to get everything lined up right. As for the sled verse miter saw, the sled allows me to make the same cut over and over quicker, and more accurately than the miter. Hope this helps!

Gluing end grain to face grain will most definitely fail at some point. End grain moves too much to be glued to face grain. It almost always fails at that point.
@1031Investing3 жыл бұрын
Yes, It worries me alot to give away as presents and have it fail later. I went to end-grain boards exclusively. Also, end grains offer many other reasons to consider.

Its nice but I thought the long grain of wood was soft and would wear easy as a cutting board.
@CalebsFineWoodworking3 жыл бұрын
Yes that is true, the face grain of the board will wear quicker than say an end grain board. One like this is meant more for lighter cutting and will still hold up fairly well.

Well done. Question: Do you have any concern about the end grain glue-up failing?
@CalebsFineWoodworking3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Personally I don't think the end grain glue up will give out because it's glued on so many different sides, including the edge grain, which is supposedly just as strong as if there wasn't a joint. As long as treated properly, it should hold up perfectly fine. Hope this helps!
