You can still see the crack and other defects in the finished product. But since the defects are deeper inside the epoxy and not on the surface, it actually adds character, reminiscent of thick ice.

Good thinking to add the sawdust to the glue to fill in gaps. For future reference, you should use fine dust, not large shavings or chips. The larger pieces probably added to the gaps rather than filling them in. The finer the dust, the better for DIY wood filler.

Ah, yes, that makes sense. I'll try to remember it nest time, thanks for the tip!

And if you can use fine wood dust from the same pieces that you used in the build, even better. You'll have a better colour match. Not sure if it matters, but it stands to reason that it does: there's also transparent wood glue. I guess that would result in an even better colour match when mixed with the sawdust.

The bubbles came out because you put the two glasses of resin and hardener too high from the glass where you mix them. Epoxy catch air very easily between its molecules and this effect is stronger if you put more distance between recipents. I learned the hard way too haha. Cool proyect i like too see more of this in the future :)

Hey great job! A few tips from an (albeit beginner) hobbyist woodworker: Hold the hand planer at an angle so it will cut easier, and when filling in gaps you can pack it with sawdust and then add in CA glue (superglue). Once sanded it is almost imperceptible from the rest of the wood. Also, make sure to wear a dust mask (even a $2 mask is a million times better than nothing) when sanding and/or routing as the dust can be harmful to your lungs. Some types of wood dust are toxic. To get rid of the bubbles when pouring epoxy, mix together slowly and try not to introduce air into the mixture, and after pouring into the mold wait a bit then run a torch or heat gun over the surface to pop the bubbles that do show up. Overall well done! I think this looks really cool! I would love to see more woodworking projects in the future!

Whoah, respect! Not having a table saw at your disposal made the project a lot harder and resulted in a lot more manual labour. I wouldn't even have started without a decent table saw with tiltable blade, because I suck at keeping my cuts straight using a hand saw. Very impressive!

Instead of using resin to fill the whole block, would frosted acrylic sheets on the ends give the same effect?

I don't think so, I think the acrylic would have to be pretty thick so with the lights on you don't notice that there's just an empty cavity inside

Indeed, with the acrylic sheet there are two transitions between air and the "gap filler material". You'd always see the other side of the acrylic, just like you see the other side of a window pane.

When using a hand plane, you need to use it properly. First, the blade must be sharp and must be lowered so it is just barely past the base. When you run your finger over it, you should just barely feel the blade. Your looking for about 1/16th of an inch or so. The purpose of the hand plane is to remove very little material with each pass. If the blade is adjust properly, you should see thin coiled shavings coming off the wood. Second, when using a hand plane you enter the wood from the side at an angle. You don't enter from the end like you were doing and you don't go straight along wood like you were doing. This will lead to chipping and tear outs and an uneven surface. The hand plane is one of the best tools ever made but it is a skill that takes a lot of practice.

This is a very beautiful piece, very simple design yet amazing. I just have one suggestion though, you should have probably screwed the the small wood stand to the bigger triangle to increase its rigidity since wood glue tends to fade and loosen with time.

I found your channel from the books you create, but it is great to see you are multi-talented. Great job on the build. 5:36 Moving the pieces on top of a piece of sandpaper would most likely be easier for you and give a more uniform result. I actually like how that crack on the epoxy looks and the LED on. It would look even better with a couple cracks though. :)

just an added thought for anyone attempting this. you don't have to pour epoxy at all. most hardware stores sell acrylic panes. you can cut a slot into the wood to hold it for when you glue it all up. then paint the back of the acrylic a white color and it will diffuse the light. it will also be lighter and you won't have to wait for epoxy to set and off-gas with the added bonus that you can hide the wiring internally. also, most large hardware stores will cut wood to length and at angles for you. just touch up with sand paper when you get home. just some thoughts if you ever want to revisit this.

As far as cleaning up your corners for glue up, you can tilt the blade on your circ saw to 30 degrees. It may not be 100% dead on accurate but a heck of a lot closer than using a hack saw. The other bit would be that saw dust/glue slurry. Right idea just wrong time to use it. The dust most likely compounded the gaps in your miters. Glue it up THEN come back and fill with saw dust/glue. And since you were painting that anyways the wood filler would have been sufficient....or even common, cheap spackle works.

Yup, that's about the only thing I miss in this project. But it would probably complicate the power supply, unless the LED strip happens to run at the same voltage as the charger, which implies that the "smarts" of the charging circuit would be inside the controller and not the charger.
