In this video you see Bunny and Adam, making a woven hazel retaining wall for Bunny’s vegetable garden.
Bunny plants up a mini herb garden, and creates divisions between the herbs with a homemade low serpentine woven willow fence. This was done over 20 years ago, and now Bunny removes it (having patched it up a few times over the years). Dave builds her a new stone retaining wall, using left over stone and beautiful coping stones from Ebay .
Watching this back Bunny is embarrassed about the state of her vegetable beds, in the original recording. She would like me to flag up that she was commuting to Eniwa,Japan, as she was working on a large job (ecorinvillage.com), as well as recording 12 programmes for Carlton tv, on top of her usual jobs, plus my brother and I were teenagers when this was filmed, so it was really busy time. So unfortunately the vegetables got very neglected as you will see.

Both walls are beautiful. I suppose the stone wall will last longer, but the hazel had a great run.

I love the woven wall. I have two beautiful willow baskets that for four years have served to camouflage the concrete wall beneath my front porch. They're disintegrating and getting infested with springtails when it was rainy and wet in the summer. Still, looking back, I don't regret having had the beautiful texture and color in my garden.

Thank you for showing us how to build the Woven planters. I’ve often wondered how you made them. They are/were lovely. I also liked how you wove the Willow thru the Hazel planters creating a special place for your herbs. How creative! Thank you again for the lesson!

So the railway ties - can be used for raised gardens without harm to the plants? and what about for something for the cattle to walk on, or no because they may lay down on it?

pressure treated with preservatives ? won’t that affect the health of the plants ?
@bunnyguinness
@bunnyguinness 7 ай бұрын
No it just means the wood is in a vacuum when they put the preservative in so the chemicals penetrate further into the timber so make the timber have a longer lifespan. A lot of softwood is treated this way. It is harmless to plants though. 🐇

Would you explain why you used willow within the bed for weaving instead of hazel?
@bunnyguinness
@bunnyguinness 7 ай бұрын
Well we wanted to show both and willow is often much thinner and more pliable so if you want a neater, closer woven fence it is better for this. Hope this helps 🐇
