🌿Citric acid information:
When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap.
A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water.
These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap.
A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases.
Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level.
How much citric acid should be added to soap?
Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight.
How to use citric acid
Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils.

Sara, two things: now I know why I've always been drawn to birch trees and now I also know why I think of you as a sister from a world away - we're the same nationality! This is seriously one of my favorite tutorials. I never realized one could tap the sap from the tree. The final result is heavenly! And we never get tired of seeing you and Mollie enjoying the great outdoors 🙂 Have a blessed day, my friend.

Hi Sarah. Another wonderful video! I was just waking through the woods this afternoon and came across some chaga. It was low enough that my husband was able to easily pull the main part from the tree, leaving a few nodules. There's plenty more on that tree but I would need a ladder to harvest it. Unfortunately, the tree is almost completely dead. I've been keeping an eye on this birch for 5 years. I did make a batch of chaga soap and it turned out the color of a fawn without any colorants. I guess I steeped my tea for a while. 😊 I didn't get a chance to tap any birches this season but my husband came across a neighbor not to far from us and he saw they had a couple of birches tapped. He inquired about them and she seemed embarrassed to say what she was doing like he would think she was odd. Little does she know he's married to me and it seems nothing I do is normal. 😅 He talked to her about chaga and she knew nothing about it. Now she'll keep her eyes open for it. As soon as I saw your community post, tapping the birch, I was guessing right away that your sap would be your water substitute. The colors you chose were an invite for spring to come! Green is my favorite! The dandelion greens were a beautiful addition. I may try that, but using my dried wild lettuce instead. I wonder if the pain relieving properties would stay intact, although it would be such a small amount. Worth a try. You also got me thinking in a different direction. I do a lot of foraging and canning. I harvest wild violets to make tea infusions and jelly. By adding acid to the infusion prior to making jelly, the color goes from violet to brilliant pink because of the pH changing. I wonder how this would work being the lye morphs certain colors. The violets are far from coming up yet but I've got enough dried in a jar that I could try a batch and see what happens. 😮 I just started looking through your Formulator's Workbook. You've put an immense amout of information in it and it's an excellent guide for someone just starting to soap. I'll make sure to direct any of my friends that want to learn soaping to your channel and workbook. Molly looked a little anxious at the end trying to get off your lap. Let her run and chase the squirrels. Enjoy your weekend and I look forward to your next video. 😊

So glad you got a chance to make soap with chaga, so interesting about the color! I'll let Molly run haha, I was just trying to get some footage with her but she was not having it😄 Have a great weekend!

Hello! This healing kind of soap is just the content I was looking for. On 24th April I was viciously attacked by a drunk driver and left with a crushed pelvis and hips and cracked thighs. Right now I am bed ridden but have hopes of walking again I the next few months but I really need to take care of my skin where the hardware is protruding. I can't imagine I'll ever get into my old career again (heavy equipment operator/heavy highway excavation) and I won't really hire able anywhere else so maybe I can create a new career for myself. This birch water soap looks beautiful, is it kind on open wounds and safe on surgical steel? I have more questions but I'm heavily sedated at night and my mind goes to weird places. I hope this message makes sense to you but I've got to get some sleep for I have another surgery in about 10 hours. Thank you and take care.
