The best hypothesis I've heard about what the Roman dodecadrons are, is they are for creating coded communications. The holes indicate what specific coding wheel would fit (12 wheels). Each coding wheel would have 25 characters in a circle, with 5 characters between each knob. After each word is decoded, the dial would be turned five characters over. Just have to find the dials. As the rest of the Roman military used nautical communication around the Mediterranean, the northern Europe forces used horse riders who were more vulnerable to interception than naval vessels.

Not a mystery - going along the edges, we have to traverse the vertices of the dodecahedron so that we pass through each vertex only once returning to the vertex we departed. All peaks must be touched. The traversal of the vertices in the Roman logic game can be guided using a piece of thread, fixing it to the small spheres at the vertices of the dodecahedron to mark the path. (kind of Ancient Rubik's Cube, a logical game of the Romans). Hamilton-path, Graph Theory, Discrete Mathematics. Naturally, the design cast in bronze was a luxury item, common version was carved in wood and a nail driven into each vertex guiding the thread.

Use of the dodecahedron was described by ancient Roman scribes. They were used in times of war to hold coding-wheel plate and spindle which fit over the nubs. A random, rolling Caesar cipher allowed the generals to send and receive coded messages and then the device was used as a wax-stamping mechanism to seal the message. They fell out of use (and eventually from memory) after the fall of the Roman Empire during the so-called "Dark Ages". (Meaning even the famous King Arthur likely had and used one. He was after all a descendant of Roman governors and like his father, who had himself been the leader of the local legion of men that protected the Romans and Gauls of Brittania, would have had great use for such a device. Note: For over 50 years this "Arto the Bear" fought the Picts and Saxons practically nonstop, so it probably isn't unreasonable to infer as much!)

Of course there are a small number of "cheats" involved here - I'm no expert but I'd wager a reasonably tidy sum the Romans didn't have 3D printers, plastic or power tools, but no matter the video makes clear there is both a lot of skill and a lot of work involved in making this thing even with modern tools. As to what this thing was for why not ask the question "Why did Lungdron make this thing?" Well, probably to prove to himself, and to others, that he could. A test of skill in his craft. One might easily imagine a Roman metal craftsman in 400AD noticing a competitor in another town on a visit who had one of these things sitting prominently on a plinth in his shop window. It says "Hey guys, if I can make this you can be sure I can make anything you want to the best possible quality and precision!". So the dude goes home and tries to make one himself for his shop window. So there you have it, another hypothesis for the origins of this mysterious object: it's basically an advertisement that gradually became a meme in Roman metal crafting circles around 300-400AD.

Some have commented that knitting gloves, that is possible. The most convincing thing I've seen is using them to make gold necklace chains. If you see someone do this in demo, they use all the holes and the result is exactly like some of the ancient gold weave chains that have been found.

@jamesgriffith1008 Жыл бұрын
I thought the main theory was for knitting gloves, since it works very well for that purpose, and possibly more importantly, they've only been found in northern Europe. All of the other proposed uses would have been just as important all around the Roman empire; religious, astronomical, economical, or social, would still be relevant. And it'd make sense there isn't anything documenting it, the tools of specialized work usually aren't preserved in writing or art, they're passed from master to apprentice. There was another case I remember hearing of these strange polished bone pieces "used for religious or ceremonial purposes" and then a leather worker went, "hey, I use one, and mine is still made of bone too cuz it works better than wood, metal, or plastic"
@lundgrenbronzestudios Жыл бұрын
That is a common theory but the same effect could have been accomplished with a hole in a piece of wood so to make such an elaborate piece for a relatively simple task is problematic. Also the fact that they were buried with people and hidden in coin hordes implied they were more valuable than an ordinary tool. But who knows.

@@lundgrenbronzestudios fair enough. Good work on the casting, looks like you've got the quirks of lost PLA pretty well ironed out. I did notice you had a pretty massive brim on the print though, and some stringing. For ABS, I use a brim, but I've found PLA does just fine without it when you dial in the spacing of the first layer, and it makes the cleanup a whole lot easier (no more cutting the edges with a utility knife). Stringing can be caused by incorrect temps, so if you haven't already, find a temp tower. It's a prescliced gcode that prints different sections at different temperatures. If it strings on all layers of the temp tower, it's probably an issue with retraction, and that gets a bit trickier, because the solutions can be printer specific.
@lundgrenbronzestudios Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I’ve been wondering if I really need the brim. It would be easier without it for sure.
@jamesgriffith1008 Жыл бұрын
@@lundgrenbronzestudios it's useful to prevent warping and increase adhesion to the bed, but PLA doesn't warp much, and sticks just fine most of the time. There are times on large prints it's a good precaution, better to have a little extra work cleaning than risk a 500 gram print failing, but for little stuff like this, it's more trouble than it's worth

@@lundgrenbronzestudiosI've watched a video series where a woman knitted a glove using a 3d printed dodecahedron. She was able to connect all the fingers to the palm just by wrapping around the various nubs. Did a few rounds, then added the thumb in the same way.

OK, I absolutely LOVE this, because I have been contemplating making a dodecahedron, myself. Mainly because I know I will never be rich enough to own a real one. I had planned to build it out of wax plates, and then cast it by centrifugal force, because I don't have the foundry setup yet, but it's the same idea. Of course, it just kills me that you tossed it in the bog... speaking of which, you should probably add a runestone. Which, considering where you are, shouldn't even raise an eyebrow. 😄 How did you fix the small flaw in the casting? Tig weld?
@lundgrenbronzestudios7 ай бұрын
Tig welding is one way. Another way is to drill out or simply insert a small piece of bronze into the hole and hammer it in. Hammer it until it is embedded and peen the metal down and filed away the rest. But typically I use a tig welder.

@@lundgrenbronzestudios I never get my quotes right the first time so I have to correct and correct.... My mother is an endless quotable quoter who's heard it all. Know nothing about 3D printing so wondering if you can hand smooth the printer's wave lines, inscribe hieroglyphics, modify program code to add hieroglyphics, etc. # Good casting practice is to cast a few extra "slugs"(3/16" diameter, 3/4" long -best to have assrment of sizes) you can later thread for repairs if needed with the matching metal. Or, in this case, an extra threadable "nubscrew" or two. Defect can be drilled out, threaded, then cast blanks threaded to fit, then peened/finished. Peening compresses void and makes for a very strong permanent repair. Don't quote this - never did much metal casting - just remember academically. A good welder may do differently, not sure.

Honestly, I don't care if they end up changing the name of my town. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, and this will always be home. A: "Do they really think that changing the company's name is going to effectively distance it from the scandal?" B: "Yeah, I don't get it. A rose by any other name, and all that."

@@lundgrenbronzestudios If one has no welder then color matching screws still a viable option today, though may require a tap/die set. Good option if alloy is difficult to weld, too. Sprues are often used as the screws. A process called friction or cold welding uses a sprue slightly larger than drilled out repair hole - sprue is placed in drill and spun until it stops, resulting is a strong permanent "cold weld". Simple ball pen hammer removes smaller pockmarks, dremel like tool with lots of bits, asrtmnt of files, sandblaster-tumbler-vibration, buffing wheel, etc., etc.. Welding bits of sprue/runner pieces may be the best. There are Tons of repair tricks out there, everyone finds the one(s) they like best. Finishing can be minimalist or can take longer than all the other steps combined. You have the best option Tig, an O2 torch will do, along with lots of other tricks not even listed here.

It seems quite plausible and explains several things, like the knobs on each vertex, the rings around some of the holes, the reason why they are found associated with either very wealthy merchants or the military, and why it has 12 differently-sized holes on the item. Video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHOnmKB7aMljl9k

Must duplicate it exactly. Don't make up your own hole pattern. Use lots of photos of existing versions. Suppose it was a modern single flat plate with the same holes. Then obviously its for creating wood dowels of various sizes. Hammer a rough-carved stick through it to get started, then later just yank it through each smaller aperture. If they were scattered all over, mostly in remote military camps and not in cities, then they'd be for "mass production" of arrow shafts, not just for any smooth dowels. Any giant ones? Those are for making smooth spears.

we dont really know! not really! we know exactly what they were used for and how many of them were required to be used together - a drum roll please! ta-da! the tent holders with the minimum 4 corners - the thick spears (they called them hastas) would be placed into one size of the hastatenera (dodecahedron) and skinny ones would be placed into another size - then use either leather drapes or rolls of fabric to cover the cube like shape tent - and by the way hastateneras (dodecahedrons) were found mostly in the north of europe where the cold whether was most common - so several tents would be built creating a small square like plaze in the center - also the reason they were made out of bronze and blacksmithed by army suppliers - is to allow bronze to shrink during cold night which leads to holding the hastas tighter - we are also aware of dodecahedron with tiny 3 to 4 holes on each side - those were used in the roman fleet to hold hammocks in the sleeping compartments - as they allow even distribution of ropes at each side of the hammocks - hope that helps!
