Hi...just came over from your Glacial Gold Channel......Very interesting.

Great video. If you where to angel the work the other way when pouring. it would be bottom fed which which I find involves less turbulence and really helps to get to all the corners. Do you have the book 'COMPLETE HANDBOOK OF SAND CASTING' It has a good image on the front cover that explains what I mean.

Thank you for the great starter course. I just ordered my first smelter with a sand casting frame . I want to be as safe as I can be and protective gear like respirators and face shields are common sense. Explosions of Molten metal will make oil burns look like nothing . The pouring ring was not . The Less force on the crucible , the longer it will last . Also that aluminum cans are trash is great to know. You saved me so much time and poisoning. Looks like lost wax is in my future. I’m excited. Thanks.

instead of petro bond or green sand use regular cement mixed with used car oil or a smokeless two stroke oil 5 cups of cement and one cup of oil mix throughly and sift it multiple times it gives you the cleanest casting

You should get a 3d printer so you don’t have to make wood molds.
@lundgrenbronzestudios2 күн бұрын
I have one but it doesn’t make pieces long enough. They make a conveyor belt but I don’t really want one of those. Making the pattern out of wood is just part of the skill building.
@ryforg2 күн бұрын
@ try adding multiple parts together. You can heat it very hot to weld them, use specialized glue. Or just normal methods like super glue or screws. Maybe even try holding them together while making the mold. Idk you can do whatever you want, woodworking sounds fun too. I just prefer 3d printing because it’s more accurate and I already have the printer.

I need to melt steel so I can make speciality tools that can’t be made or bought anywhere. The melting temperature of steel is 2,750 degrees. With taking 3 1/2 inches out of the chamber to make the furnace smaller, would that affect the melting time in a positive or negative way when it comes to the steel? I’ve never done anything like this before, but I am certainly willing to learn.
@lundgrenbronzestudios4 күн бұрын
I don’t believe you can reach those temperatures with propane. Steel is its own beast and not really for a backyard setting. But you will definitely need a forced air burner to attempt that. I don’t know much about burners though. Bronze is much easier.

for tinkering and fiddling, modern hobby ones have a hollow wooden mushroom shape with 5 crams on top for exact the same purpose : braiding, knitting all kind of threads, leather ropes or even soft metal wires.
@lundgrenbronzestudios5 күн бұрын
Some types could have that function but some dodecahedron would not work more those tasks so it deepens the mystery.

I would highly recommend spraying boron nitride on the mold surfaces. It acts like teflon and allows the metal to flow through the mold. I've also noticed that it slows freezing to a noticeable amount. The sand can also be reused as normal. I like the pump spray by Zyp.
@lundgrenbronzestudios6 күн бұрын
Interesting. I’ve never heard of that. I’ll have to try it out.
@Cornish_Co6 күн бұрын
@@lundgrenbronzestudios I also use it on my cast iron and graphite molds as well. I get somewhere between 15 & 20 uses before recoating. Just spray enough to turn the surface white and use a torch to dry it before casting. You will be amazed to see copper ball up and roll around on it like oil on water.

I watched someone heat up the molds in a oven. Once good and hot, they poured it and it helped bigtime, BUT.. There is some shrinkage so there was flashing around the pour, but thats easy to remove. RIP Splinter 🥺
