I like the idea of using concrete for the base. The cat posts and towers at the stores always seem to be top heavy (and outrageously overpriced!), and I've ended up putting bricks or books on or around the base to keep from tipping over.

Suggestion if you were to make it again for hidden fixings for the rope. Use a forstner bit/ spade bit to create a rebate in the top of the post before an end cap is added and also drill/cut and chisel out a channel out of the side. you can use a washer and screw to keep it in place then wind it round to place of your choice and cut it with 100mm to spare and mark the wood. Drill a hole all the way through that the rope can pass through and then drill a wider hole half way through in which a knot would be abe to squeeze in. The knot will be covered when you wind the rope around the post. once all the way to the top you can then screw it back into place and cut any excess then glue on the top cap

Hey Mr Bone Brown, I'm a brand new subscriber with a love of the type of stuff you do. I notice you use a lot of pallet wood and like I used to you dismantle pallets with a crowbar and hammer. Recently I found a fantastic chap with a massive field of reclaimed wood. When I turned up to get some old fence panels with my hammer and crowbar he let me have a go of his Pallet Breaker. It changed my life! It made taking pallets apart easier, quicker and I split almost no slats. The wood reclaimed was all in really good shape and the nails easier to remove. The type I borrowed wad about £70 on ebaY or Amazon. It was a little out of my price range but definitely worth what it costs. I found a roughneck one on Amazon for just over £20. It has a lifetime guarantee and does the job perfectly (needs a little more effort than the longer heavier one I borrowed) but I can't recommend one enough. It will change your life. Lee 😀

Try cutting out a 200mm square or oval piece of wood and cover it with sisal rope or carpet and screw it to the top. Our cats love sitting on the top.

Great job bud. I would have used hot glue for the rope. Makes for a tight tight Wind and it's safer for the cat than nails would be in case it catches a claw on it

I think you could have saved the original post. If you counter sink some screws to hold the pieces together and then cover all that with rope all the way down to the base you would never see them. It still turned out nice and ultimately if the cat is happy with it then consider it a job well done.

that looks great, thank you for sharing! if you have a little piece of leather of rubber to epoxy on top of the nail heads, it would help avoiding the risk of the cat's claw getting caught.

don't let your PVA glue freeze it weakens it over time, if your workshop gets below zero then you might want to think about building a heated cabinet or bringing your glue into the house

1st
