You can use air-dry clay for this project as it does not need to be food safe. If you do use air-dry clay, you can use normal paint to decorate or give color to your finished pieces and apply a layer of glossy spray or mod podge to give a shiny finish.
If you are using stoneware or earthenware clay, make sure to use the proper materials to finish it off.

This came out so well! Did you have to get the piece bisque fired before glazing? Or did you apply the underglaze and glaze after the piece was bone dry? Thanks!

Thanks! I just painted and glazed it after it was bone dry just because of kiln access. I’d suggest getting it bisque fired before painting it though x
