Fantastic result for a one-day job! Question: can't you just quench longer when you have thick clay to avoid heat creep? Just how much heat can that clay keep, really? I haven't tried making a hamon yet but I do have a bunch of satanite, I'm interested in trying one soon!

@@forgedbywill Thank you so much for checking out the video! And as far as the clay goes; the answer is yes, sorta.... When you’re quenching with the clay especially you gotta be careful of a “vapor” barrier that forms around the steel; you can get rid of this by oscillating the piece vigorously which will help immensely, just make sure to keep the piece submerged the whole time so you don’t get the feared “fireball”. That being said, with thick clay you have to fight that a lot more as well as the heat that is “creeping” out of the thicker clay will be another obstacle your fighting( I.e. trying to cool that faster than it can come out) The reason I advocate for thin clay besides it’s historical evidence is because that initial drop in temperature from 1500 F to like 600-700 ish farenheight is what creates the hard edge. Well you only need a thin layer to prevent the spine from dropping as quickly in temperature and thus creating the hamon. I hope that helps; another aspect is thicker clay retains moisture longer so then you will have to worry about it cracking and flaking off even more than I had happen in the video 😬 I’m pumped to hear you are going to try it! If you do please let me know how it goes! God bless - Ian

@@IanZ_Forge Thanks a lot for the detailed answer! It's much appreciated as I am only starting out in this craft, going at a rather slow pace but trying new things nearly every single day! I guess I'll be able to avoid some of the issues you had by simply... waiting for the clay to dry completely haha. The perks of not being in a hurry :) I'll let you know how things go! I usually post everything I do on my instagram, shouldn't be too hard to find me if you feel so inclined. I couldn't find yours, let me know if you have one! Cheers!

@@forgedbywillYou’re more than welcome! I’m glad it helped! And I couldn’t find yours either, is it the same as your KZbin handle? Mine you have to search an exact ianz_forge to find however Instagram has my page flagged because of their algorithm issues (it’s a whole thing with Instagram flagging knifemakers recently and it won’t let non-followers find your page) Check out my Facebook though if you can at the same name! God bless - Ian

@@IanZ_Forge My handle is slightly different, it's forgedxwill. I've seen the knifemaker shenanigans happening ever since I joined, it doesn't help for sure! I just followed you, I don't use facebook though. Thanks again! -Will
