Smoking on an Oliva V Melano Maduro, sipping on some freshly ground Sumatra coffee, and watching you with your masterful craftsmanship. This is the life. Wonderful video, music, and smoking a great cigar bro. Thank you for this....

Oliva V is one of my favorites... This comment is perfect. I have literally imagined someone doing exactly what you are talking about, as I myself love watching cigar videos, sipping on some good coffee and smoking a cigar. Thanks so much for the positive feedback! I tried really hard to paint a story with this video, as cigars are one of my main passions. I pinned this comment, I hope you dont mind! Keep putting smoke in the air buddy, and have a great year!

Love the video. I was born in Cuba, my family is from Spain and I became a free man in Florida. Smoking a good cigar and drinking Cuban coffee " a colada" is like time-traveling for me. Only a few people will understand what it feels like. Blessings my brother! 🙏

I used food grade butcher block oil and finish wax. Takes a bit more time for wax to cure but the result is a water tight food grade wax sealer behind cedar veneer.

Great use for that old out dated china cabinet many people would have just sold it, but much like a man in the arms of a loving woman or tobacco leaves in the hands of the right person, everything can become something better when loved and appreciated for what it has to offer instead of being burned, sold or thrown out

Awesome build and video, couple of questions as I am building my own 65x33.5x15.5, curious what glue and sealant you used (especially on the cedar lining. Also noticed you didn't use any hardware, have you had any issues since it was built with the cedar warping?

Its really awesome, no doubt about, more so because you upcycled something else. But I'm wondering about the controlling mechanism. Is this just a cabinet that you have to remember to put bowls of water into? Is there an aftermarket humidity packet, or regulator? So what's the secret to making sure its right with little or no maintenance? Thanks

@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Lee. So I have had the Humidor built for almost a year now, and normally keep around 200 cigars at a minimum in there. I have had success with the Boveda 320g size humidity packs. I have one on top and one on bottom, and really havent had to many issues. I might throw any extra smaller one in there during the winter months if it drops a little low. I just like Boveda. You never have to worry about it getting too humid as the packs will absorb any extra moisture in the air! Thats awesome that you are going to try and build one yourself, be sure to send me a picture when you are done. Either on facebook or instagram I would love to see it!

Really great video, a great for me and my project. However, live in Las Vegas and I cannot find sheets of Spanish Cedar anywhere and no one can seem to order it. I went to the link that you posted on your video but they have a minimum of FOUR 4x8 sheets to order which I obviously can't use. So having trouble resourcing the wood.

Great work brother. Any issues with it holding humidity? I want to build My own for my office. This video gives me inspiration and ideas on how to do it. Any issues ? Or things you would do differently next time? Video idea, “things I’d do differently if I did this project again.” Would you have built an even bigger one? My problem is Always outgrowing my humidors.
@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hey OC! Thanks for the comment and I’m glad you enjoyed it! I am still really enjoying it. I haven’t had any structural issues or problems keeping humidity or anything like that. Looking back I would have probably put either the bottom shelf or top shelf at a little steeper angle(to allow for different depth boxes... for instance I made my shelves and angles based on holding a Padron box and marking the angle I liked... I also love Tatuaje cigars. His boxes are around the same length( the vitola I like anyways), but he makes deeper boxes. You cant see the cigars as well as I would like too. But other than that I am more than happy with it. The size is general(amount of cigars it would hold) seems great, but I also have 2 small humidors and the little coolidor you see in the video. I keep it pretty stacked but still have plenty of room. That is one reason I placed the top shelf higher to allow for box/bundle storage

@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ray! No issues at all buddy, and I actually intended to cover the wood around the glass just one of those things I havent done yet. I did put a clear sealer around the inside of the glass though, and I really havent had any issues so far. Only thing I run into is that keeping the humidity in it during the cold weather months has been harder, but most humidors are like that unless you have one of the NewAir Cooler humidors. I just through an Extra Boveda pack in there and I am good to go! Thanks for the comment, and I am glad you enjoyed!

Yeah I used weather stripping around the inside. I put the bottom seal on the edge of the Spanish cedar in the bottom. For the sides(inside and outside) I placed them on the inside of the door. The top was a little tricky but I ended up cutting some plexiglass strips and attaching it to the inside of the top of the humidor leaving a little overhang to attach the weather stripping to. For the glass(I think I did that off camera) I used a clear odorless caulk/gasket sealer around the edges. This works well by the way, if you have some smaller glass top humidors. Obviously take out your cigars while doing it or while seasoning it. Holds humidity way better! Once again thanks for the comments and questions brotha. If you have Instagram follow me and send me some messages if you have anymore questions and I would be more than happy to help! (@drayworkshop)

Great video !! I was wondering what type of door sealant did you use on the front door ? And did you choose a different lock system for each of the door? Thanks !!

@DraysWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff. So for the sealant on the front door, I actually used weather stripping on the insides of the doors. For the latches, I used window latches. I found some that were cheap and looked really nice. I don't really have a need to lock it up, so I didn't put any sort of lock on it You can see the door stripping and window latches at @12:50. Thanks for the comment man and I am glad you liked it.

What type of glue did you use to glue the cedar... great piece I’m about to start on my soon.

Hey Classic, thanks for the comment! To glue the main walls, back, bottom and top I just used normal wood glue. You can get it at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Tire ins is the brand I use and have never had a problem. For all of the shelving and support pieces inside the humidor I used odorless super glue. It sets up really fast and is pretty easy to clean up if you accidentally get it somewhere unintended (like I did) 😂. I wish you luck buddy!

So it is just like any other humidor, in that I try to keep it it the coolest part of the house/room. Summer normally isn’t an issue for me temperature wise, it has been a little harder for me to maintain humidity over the winter though. Thanks for the comment and for watching!

Awesome job. So many of those old display cases at the junk stores these days, shouldn't be difficult to find one for myself. By the way, how are you maintaining the humidity in the case? Manual or do you have something else going on in there.

Hey Ted! Thanks for the compliment! I have been using 4 of the 320g Boveda packs. 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom. Those do really well for keeping the humidity just right. I will also use smaller packs occasionally while re-seasoning the larger ones! Have a great day!

Thanks for the compliment Gary! Yeah you might have missed it but I use Boveda Packs for humidification. Since making the video I upgraded the packs to the biggest size they have. I had around 10 of the medium packs in there, and while you can recharge them, that just isn’t really efficient 😆. Man I’m sure you have the talent, I learned most of what I know from youtube, and practicing on smaller things in the beginning. Also, I know people talk about Harbor Freight, but when I started I got most of my tools from there, and then upgraded later. They work well, just not for someone who is a carpenter and uses them day in and day out. For home projects and things they would work out great for you! Once again I appreciate you watching and the comment! Have a great day!

That was very well done, I just have got one question. Why not use small staples instead of all the glue?
@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Dewayne thanks for the compliment. I did use some staples to put in the spacers in the back of the humidor, but I was afraid they might blow out, and I knew the wood glue would be strong enough to hold it together, but I am sure if I would have looked a little harder I probably could have found some that would work! Hope you have a good day!

This is a great video! I am in the process of building my own and found your video. I started with 4/4 (inch thick) cedar boards and milled them down into 1/8" thick boards I glued up into panels. I ended up building shelves similar to you. I love the idea of the walnut trim and will probably copy that idea for mine. I am using an oasis humidifier and one of the things I am struggling with is how to provide sufficient seals to be able to maintain humidity. I've decided to actually not use any at first and see if my humidifier will keep up. The other thing I don't have a lot of experience with is power management - for now planned on installing an outlet someplace inside the cabinet where I can plug in the humidifier and lights. Any information you have on that topic would be helpful. Also any learnings and/or things you would do differently now that you've had yours a couple of years would be helpful. Really great job! I hope mine looks half as good.

First off sorry for being so late! I cant really help with the power management situation, as I maintain mine with the XL Boveda packs and that works really well for me. I do see a little struggle during the winter times, but nothing a couple extra packs doesnt help. For sealing around the doors, I just used adhesive rubber window seals. The one thing I would change in my build in particular, would be to adjust the upper shelves a little, and give me a little more room for box storage underneath the top shelf. Thanks for the comment and I am sure yours has turned or will turn out great!

@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Stefan, the spray I am using is just a clear coat spray paint to act almost like a "sealer". I basically just sprayed the whole surface of the inside to help with any pores and to hopefully help with the humidity even behind the spanish cedar that I line it with later. Hope this helps, and glad you enjoyed!

How did you go about adding lighting?
@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Brandon, thanks for the comment. In the beginning and in the video I used the little adhesive disc lights that I believe I purchased from Home Depot. They have the ability to changed colors, and have a remote control. After a while though, they started to not stick as well, I am guessing just because of the humidity. I think a better option might be to try the strip lighting, and maybe super glue it to the inside. Both are battery powered. Thanks again and glad you enjoyed it.

Thank you for the great video. I am in the process of tearing down my brand new cabinet humidor and removing the compressor and heating element. I want to line it with mahogany with cedar drawers but after your video I decided to check the link for the spanish cedar that you used. It looks like they only sell spanish cedar "plywood". Did you use plywood? if so how is it holding up? I am concerned with the plywood sucking humidity out of the humidor and possibly bowing? Have you seen either of those issues with you build? Thanks again for sharing.
@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Doug, thanks for the comment my friend. I also did a good bit of research because I also questioned the reliability of the veneered plywood vs normal spanish cedar. One thing about plywood though, is if it is quality it should not move to much. Now if you just got a cheap piece from a local big box store the likelihood of it possibly bowing or warping is alot higher. After 6 months or so I have had zero issues at all with it. I have had a little issues with keeping humidity, but I blame that on my office being one of the cooler rooms in the house, and with cold, humidity in the humidor will lower. I also blame it on the 2 large glass doors. I did use a clear sealant around the joints, but I know some still escapes though there, as well as making it harder to control the temperature inside. When I notice the humidity start dropping I just pull out the old boveda packs, and replace them with fresh, and the humidity pops right back up. In my research I also found many others have used spanish veneer plywood, and I didnt find any stating they had too many issues with it. I hope I helped with your decision, and if you have any other questions just let me know. Thanks again for the comment my friend!

Do you use a bandsaw for everything?
@DraysWorkshop
@DraysWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
On this project I did. You can probably see it in some of the shots because the humidor was setting on it and the outfeed table for my table saw. I have it fully restored now, but at the time is was apart and not working, that is why I used the bandsaw for this project. Just made the most sense for the smaller parts and ripping when I needed too. Thanks for the comment, and I hope you enjoyed the video.
