What does hitting the inside of the piece on the flat of the anvil do? If you mind me asking

It's just one way of smoothing the outer surface of the steel, since the plate is effectively being pinned between the anvil and hammer 🙂

I started teaching myself from online sources about five years ago. I initially got a lot of good information from the Armour Archive but I've been able to find a few more communities since then.
